Hi, new owner and just received my uBitx V6 unit yesterday.

I have a few questions as most of the information is for the older versions.

1. power supply: Do I need to add a diode to the board for reverse polarity protection or is there already one on the board since the power receptacle is already surface mounted? (assume I do need to add an inline fuse, i'm using a 3amp 12v wall wart from a hard drive enclosure but have other supply options--but the wall wart already has the correct wired plug end so it's quicker).

2. speaker: I assumed the included baofeng mic would double as the speaker (like it does on the UV5R HT's) but it appears to have the 2nd jack removed and rewired for mic only. I have an 8 ohm 2 or 3 inch speaker from a radio or something I salvaged I plan to use, is that too much speaker? or would I be better off using one half of a pair of amplified computer speakers/

3. Software: I see a lot of reference to replacement firmware. not sure which one to use; it appears CEC_V1.200 is the latest? if so, not sure which version in the zip file I should use for the stock V6 display--is it the Nextion version or one of the others?

I have several Arduino Nano's, I will likely just program one with the new firmware and pull the original for safe keeping. i've only uploaded code from the Arduino compiler, but the other is HEX, I assume there is there a guide to uploading the HEX?

Thanks for any input, i'm looking forward to playing around with this over the next few days.

oh one last thing, is it normal the volume control doesn't stick out far enough to use the nut on the threads? since it is mounted on the board with the end of the threads flush with the display (ie. it is set back from the edge a good 1/8") there is no way to fit the nut on the face plate...

Hi Tim,

1. There are diodes, but no fuses.

2. A scrap speaker should be fine

3. Nextion versions won't work with the v6 stock screen. You'll either want to grab Ashhar's latest or my latest code from github. Ashhar made a video about it today: /g/BITX20/message/76435

Hello Tim,

Yes the jam nut for the volume control is not needed for the V6 Full Kit but has been included anyway just in case one would want to change the front panel. This is a part of the standard Basic kit and we have also included it for the Full Kit that comes with an additional case as well. But its not needed.

I tried to upload the new firmware but following Ashhar's video does not seem to work for the board supplied in the unit.

I did successfully upload the sketch to another Arduino I had but that one has the male pins on the opposite side of the board and has female on the side that would plug onto the Raduino so I can't use it...

Following his video, I see in his tools drop down "Programmer: Arduino Gemma", yet I do not have that option. No other option works, and I always get an error that it cannot communicate with Programmer Ar--something or other.? I am not super familiar with all the terms, but it seems the Arduino IDE cannot communicate with the board MAYBE because it needs a Bootloader installed??? this from searching their help section. I hate to burn a bootloader to the stock unit without knowing if it will work, or erase the program or what. Maybe he burned these with a bootloader not included or compatible with the Arduino IDE?

anyhow, I did get the unit fired up this morning but have a screech coming from the speaker until you turn the volume at least half way up then it goes away. Unfortunately, even at full volume it is barely audible unless you put your ear within inches of the speaker.

I will try a different power supply and speaker and see how it goes.

Anyone else have problems using the IDE to communicate with the board? (I tried 6 different cables, don't think it's that as it does ID the board, port works, etc.)

Hi Tim,

I use the "AVRISP mkII" programmer setting, and the "ATmega 328 (old bootloader)" processor option.

You shouldn't need to burn a bootloader.

Thank you, the "ATmega 328 (old bootloader)" option did the trick!

I swapped speakers but got no sound, swapped again and now it works great, screech is gone and plenty loud. apparently the little tweeter was not enough and the 2nd one was bad, third one was a 4" midrange from an old bookshelf speaker that works great.

impressed with the new software, encoder is nice and smooth and much faster. now to start playing!
