UBITX6 arrived today - cracked display

Hi Group!

My UBITX6 arrived today - I am looking forward to building it!.
The glass of the display seems to be cracked in the corner.
Can I replace it with any?ILI9341?320x240 display from ebay etc?

Thanks,
Paul.

You can try it out and chances are good that it will work until you get a replacement. As to replacement, just make sure it has the same pin configuration and it should work.

Paul,?
You can. ?Make sure it's a 2.8" display or it won't fit the mounting holes or the window area if you bout the full kit. ?If you have the basic key and are building your own case, you can even use a 3.2" ILI9341 display with the same 14 pin connector that the factory uBITX supplies BUT, I repeate BUT, the mounting holes won't line up so it wouldn't fit a factory case. ?That 3.2" ILI9341 display has exactly the same number of pixels and uses the exact controller as the 2.8" display so absolutely NO software change is necessary to use the larger one.

When you get the replacement display, check the back. ?There is a solder blob jumper called J1 or JP1 that is left open on some of those displays. ?In order to work with the V6 uBITX Raduino, this jumper must be soldered across. ?That puts the display's 3.3V regulator in circuit. ?The display doesn't like to work on the V6 Raduino if you don't have this jumper shorted.

All this information is from actual experience here with a V6 Raduino AND the two displays. ?

I hate autocorrect. ?Should have been "bought the full kit" and "If you have the basic kit" instead of what my email program wanted me to say - LOL!.

To reiterate though, as long as it has that 14 pin single row connector, and it's an ILI9341 display, it will work just fine (assuming J1/JP1 is shorted).

? Jim, my LG Zone4 is always auto correcting to what I did not type or want, makes for extra editing.
?This uBITX V.6 is sounding interesting, but I have? projects still not done, and due to health, may take a while.

Hi again,

First of all a data point: The cracked display meant that the touch screen did not work causing what seemed to be a lockup.
Therefore I purchased a replacement display it is identical in every way to the original one apart from one thing. It only displays a white screen, no graphics.
On the basis that it could be the initialisation bug discussed in the forums, I compiled and uploaded the firmware with the fix to the Raduino (successfully).
I still get the white screen. With the new display I turned the volume to maximum and heard birdies and whistles so lots seem to be working - this did not happen with the original display. I also have an 1.8" display with the same controller (used on a Raspberry Pi) - and the same pin out; plugging that in displays something. I think I got a duff replacement display so will order another one. Looking around I get the impression that the IL19341 controller operates on 3.3v but I noticed that the Raduino uses 5v. I can't track down a data sheet so I was just checking that 5v is OK.

Hi Paul,

I read a number of specs for similar looking panels and some said 3.3v, and some said 5v tolerant, so it might be that you got a 3.3v only?

What specific code did you try and run?

Reed:

When I did an Antenna Analyzer build for our builder's group, I ordered 30 2.8" TFT displays, of which 11 arrived cracked. I wrote to the seller and, while unhappy, they replaced them. (They were in China.) Oddly, the displays still worked. They were not touch screen, so that might make a big difference, but for just display stuff, they all worked. In most of them, the crack was barely noticeable once they were "lit".

I find it odd that they came in a gray poly bag rather than a cardboard container. Now I'm starting to think that, when it gets opened for inspection by Customs, they take a look at whatever it is and then just toss it in a bag and send it along its way. I could be totally wrong, but the vendor said they were packed in a box.

Anyway, don't throw the display away, as you might still be able to "experiment" with it.

Please screw the main board to the case before shipping. This will prevent all the damages that are happening like broken volume pot, and cracked displays?
Philip G7JUR

as you opened , you might have some photos. try to forward those photos indicating the sl # of board to hfsignals with your comments, suggestions and requests.

That might help you and the seller too.

Hello Philip and the rest.

We did take into account many of the suggestions we received seriously and also looked into the complaints of damages that were brought to our notice. As a result we changed the entire packaging. We are now packing the entire uBitx V6 Kit in Styrofoam cutout boxes with each component separately packed into separate pockets and closed with a Styrofoam cover before being packed in a carton box. There will also be a signed contents list enclosed. Those of you whose orders are being delivered now please do let us know how it has arrived once you receive it. We are also attaching some images of the packaging for all to see.

Thanks,

Thomas

It will also be a good idea to add a note in big letters to let DHL know when custom opens the content, to be aware of possible damage. I order a case from India, then it came with a deep scratch on the well painted case.

It seems to me a very sharp tool was used to open the box, without caring what it was inside.

Thanks KD2QMZ,

We seem to be having less issues with DHL than with other couriers. However we shall try and implement your suggestion. Any suggestion on how the note should be would be welcome. You can send a note to support@... We certainly value your suggestions,

Thanks again,

Thomas
