many too many

Hello all. Like most of you, I have been getting many many Bitx Digests a day. Some are interesting, some not so much. They seem to fall into 3 categories. Bitx40 hardware, Arduino hacks, and 2 way chat discussions. IMHO, having a 2 way discussion/chat should be done as an individual, not group interchange. It just clogs up the group. Also the strings of Arduino discussion should be on a separate group, if that is at all possible. This would leave [email protected] for radio hardware discussion exclusively. I know many of you are probably thinking that all the information is of, or should be interesting to all. I’m not sure that is the case. If you have any suggestions, please share them. Just my opinion. Thanks

To all,?

This is a frustrating subject.

I want it all.

I want it all in one place.

I want it in a form where it is easy to find what I want.

I worked in the AS/400 world for a dozen years. ?Managing data was what I did. ?Having to endure data chaos is a challenging exercise, when it isn’t necessary. ?That said, I don’t see an easy fix, without cost and/or man-hours, so we endure or do without.

I for one vote to endure, the last thing I need is another group or website to hunt for anything.

I have been out of programming for half a dozen years, as I have been out most everything with a medical issue, now, I am back in the game in a limited way. ?My question is: Is there a way to scrub thru a group like this with an external program to find what you want? I would think there is a commercial product somewhere that would that.

Next: It seems that there is a big enough following to create a meaningful wiki?
Next: Keeping threads on subject (would require full time moderation)

With all said….

I would rather have it all.

I agree with Craig.? Keep it coming.? I want it in one place also, and if someone does not want to follow a topic, then just hit the delete button.? The vast majority of what I have seen on this forum applies to the Bitx family of projects in one way or the other.? Thanks.

Yup, lots of cruft on this forum, of which this thread is a primary example. ?;-)

I prefer to keep it all in one place.

Many threads cross over between the various domains suggested, for example Raduino programming and hardware mods. ?If your radio works, then you can just unsubscribe and occasionally check the groups.io website for a vague idea of what's going on.

Wiki is here: ?/g/BITX20/wiki

What I'd like is a way to download all messages from the groups.io website so I can sic an intelligent search tool on them. ?The groups.io search bar is nearly unusable. ?There is mention of downloading all messages in the groups.io help section but didn't work for me. ?My guess is that one must own the list to download all messages. ?Maybe they could be downloaded and archived somewhere else once a week or so.

In any given circuit, the most expensive part will always sacrifice itself to protect the fuse.

I use thunderbird. ?But monitor the list using the groups.io website. ?I"d like to search the last 10+ years of bitx20 posts.

How I manage the flood...

Go to?/g/BITX20/editsub and set email to a level you can live with. I like just the daily summary but many prefer none.? Then use the topic view /g/BITX20/topics on the website and read what you are interested in and the list reads almost like a forum.? The search could use some work but at least this converts the fire hose to a drinkable level.

?Hello

?
Th
?is?
group was started way back when Farhan first published his design for the BITX20 on
??
<
?> and has evolved to include all the subsequent versions of BITX design.
?? That history has made this the one place to go for inclusive information regarding BITX designs, discussion, and help.?? Because of this history the topics discussed are far ranging and sometimes quite involved.? A discussion between two or more persons may be seen as a technical discussion by some and as just discussion by others with differing interests.? If it relates in any way to BITX it is probably appropriate for this group.

It is possible to filter what we read versus what we discard by using the thread names, but only if threads are kept on-topic and are not so broadly named as to not define what is being discussed.? I wonder it it might help to use the thread header to identify the topic being discussed (i.e. "BITX40 Mixer" or "BITX17A Microphone", etc.)?? Might work, but only if it were used by most...?

This is a large group that represents many interests and several levels of technical expertise.? Trying to drive the focus too tightly on one specific subject tends to limit the value as a general repository for all BITX related information and experiences.

That doesn't work, as things get lost even after just one day.

Members are expected to Wiki things that they are find.

What I'd like is a way to download all messages from the groups.io
website so I can sic an intelligent search tool on them. The
groups.io search bar is nearly unusable.
That's what a www forum is.

With the current level of traffic, the group will implode as
"unreadable". Too much data flow and not much of it usable after even
just a week.

I was on the PIC List probably back to the 80's.? Same deal, users have so much difference in the level of help they need.

Then the chit chat was even worse.? One thing they made was a topic called "Off Topic".? You could filter out chit chat.

I use Thunderbird and made a folder for BitX emails.? Yes, in a few months there are 924 in there now!

So the group could use some topic filters? maybe "Chat" in the Subject line for starters?

If the current paradigm isn't acceptable, change the paradigm.

I get zero email. ?Ok, not 100% accurate - I get admin emails from the owners and nothing more. ?When I want to drink from the firehose, I type groups.io/g/BITX20 into my browser and gulp. ?I can search for what I want, I only follow threads if I want. ?I've spent too much of my time in 'work land' wasting time fighting the onslaught of email. ?The only way to win that game is not to play.
