Raduino

College Professor Simon Thompson

Do I need to have the LCD connected to the Raduino when I am connecting to the computer?

It is important that the Arduino Nano only see power from the USB cable when connecting it to the computer. ?I usually unplug the Arduino Nano board and LCD display (they are soldered together) from the Raduino board (has all the wires off to the Bitx40 main board) when updating firmware. ?But probably ok to just remove power from the radio, then plug the USB cable into the Nano.

It would nice to have the Nano completely off board.? Any one with spare Nano could try the stand alone down load.? IE I tried the simple Blink Sketch and it did not like it.? Only power "ON" board is illuminated.? Never see the RX/TX leds blink.? I Wonder if the Nano is program first then soldered into the si5351 pcb.? Looks to the CLK2 (MHz) is the si5351 is used.
IE: ? 25 MHz - 5 MHz = 7 MHz (40 meters).

Out of curiosity, why?? I use the Arduino Mega on my 3d printer with both USB and external power all the time.? Is there something different in the Nano that would cause problems?

I ask because one project I have had in mind but haven't really begun to think about too much yet is to implement basic rig control for operating digital modes more easily.

I have no problem uploading sketches into a Nano via USB while it’s also powered from an external power supply .? External power (5V) supplies power to Nano, LCD, and AD9850 ?or Adafruit SI5351 board.

Where did you get this from, Jerry? I've never had a problem with a Vin and USB powered at the same time. Perhaps I missed something somewhere.

Here's a couple older posts recommending that we cut power to the Raduino when cabling up the USB port.

I'd guess this usually doesn't matter, but can imagine there's cases where it might. ? ?Place your bets.?

I think it should be okay to have the 5V from the USB port and 7-15V into Vin and through the regulator. I've never had a problem doing it.

? ??/g/BITX20/message/21231?I think this is more of a test setup than a warning.
? ??/g/BITX20/message/20881?It is possible to fry the regulator, but I don't think too many of us would over drive the regulator. In general, each pin can sink about 40ma max, so as long as you don't over tax the USB supply, it's probably a better choice if you have one.

I'd guess this usually doesn't matter, but can imagine there's cases where it might. ? ?Place your bets.?

The reason for cutting +12v before plugging it into the computer is to prevent +5v from flowing up the USB cable to the computer and cause damage to it, I believe if the USB socket has a diode to prevent that backflow up to computer it should be safe to have both +12v and USB programming connecting.

The nano has a diode from VUSB to +5v. If the clones follow the official schematic it should be ok.

Cheers, Ian

I've also not had any issues with power to the Nano while programming it ... ? Power supply to the Nano and USB at the same time seems to be fine for me ... No problems .

Over the past 5 years, I've probably purchased over 50 Nanos, most of them clones and Farrukh, Dennis, and I have sold over 200 Nano PCB's for our Forty-9er project (the March, 2016, QST article) and our User Group has almost 450 members and not one person has ever mentioned a problem with having the USB cable and the external supply?attached?at the same time. I also have an antenna analyzer project that uses the Mega 2560 Pro Mini and you can't debug it without having the external supply connected at the same time because of the power requirements for the boards and the display. I'm sure there are units out there that could be fried under certain conditions, but I would think I'd have heard more about them if it were a common problem.?

With the Raduino, it hurts nothing to disconnect it if it concerns you. It's just a couple of extra steps that aren't likely when you're programming/debugging the code.

It is never a good idea to parallel two supplies of different voltages. You may get away with it 999 times out of a 1000…. But!

When you are in the Arduino IDE and uploading the sketch, can you see the TX/RX LED's flashing during the upload? What message(s) do you see issued by the IDE. If the Nano is powered by the USB cable, and the Blink failed, it could be because the serial connection isn't being made, hence the LED question. Also, if the COM link doesn't appear to be working, try installing the drivers that come with the IDE. Until you see those two LED's flashing during an upload, something's amiss.

If the Nano is a brick, you can remove it, but it's a messy job since there's no socket. Major surgery is required. Perhaps the fastest way is to carefully snip each leg of the Nano and then use a solder sucker to remove each leg and replace the Nano. (Test it first!) I use so many Nanos that I buy them 5 at a time, usually for around $10 for clones, which I've had good luck with. You'll find a bazillion uses for them, plus many of my club members buy any that I have to spare.

Not really. I've had good luck with all so far, so I tend to buy the least expensive. Lately, I'm using the Arduino Mega 2560 Pro Mini and there aren't too many of them yet. (See: ebay?162264493523). However, I usually buy 10 at a time and sell what I don't need to my club members. This helps us all since they will discount the price in quantity.
