Toroids Loose on Arrival

 

Howdy all,


I've just received #697 in the mail today, and I sure am excited to get on the air! I did notice a couple of toroids were loose on it, and before I power it up and start playing with it, I want to be sure that they just came unglued and need to be glued back down. Here are pictures of what I see:


L2:?


L4: ??(at least, I think this is L4 according to the schematic- it's not visible on the board)


Both of these were oriented incorrectly as seen here:




I straightened them out, but am not sure what to glue them down with. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Thanks!

As long as none of the wires are broken on the toroids, all you need to do is straighten them. They pretty much all came with toroids crunched, mine did. For glue, I use hot glue, but you can use silicon or contact cement or anything really. I used to use clear finger nail polish. Don't glue L4 down until you get it on frequency by compressing the turns or loosening them until you get the band coverage you want. You should be on the air soon.

Thanks a lot for that. I've seen that others have had issues, wasn't sure though. I'll try the nail polish trick since I don't have anything else handy. Looks like I have an antenna to erect and some soldering to do!

Not big issue,
Can be glued wth a drop of aeraldite in between...

From his pictures a couple of the toroids had bent over slightly and one in the
bandpass filter was turned about 75 degrees.? The toroids are not glued in place
in this kit, leaving possibility for users to make modifications without having to
remove or break glue.? It is a feature, not a problem.? If after receiving your new
BITX-40 v3 you want to secure the toroids, this can be done using hot-melt glue,
melted wax, or model airplane glue.? Other adhesives might also work.

I would suggest not securing the VFO inductor until you are sure you have it
adjusted to cover the tuning range that you desire.? It may be necessary to remove
or add one turn on this inductor.? This situation arises because the 40 meter
band is slightly different in different ITU regions.

Friends, just don't use Cyanoacrylate based ( fevi-quick ) adhesive.
It's vapour or contact can make nearby metal catch very bad rust, oxide... ( including varnished wires )

Here too using hot melt glue, but in the process just don't overheat ferrite cores.

It's better ring-mixer toroid comes pre-assembled,
otherwise I know many kits end-up in corner of junk room, due to lack of knowledge by non-electronic new-bees...

Thankyou very much for the prompt reply. For a moment there i thought it was quality issues. Yes indeed, the flexibilty in design to accomodate future addons is remarkable. Farhan has done a great job at that.

Thanks for the excellent discussion on this. I borrowed a bit of clear nail polish from my daughter, and that worked just fine. I built it up last night and started receiving with it, although I have yet to transmit with it until I work out the tuning range, and also perhaps a finer way to adjust the frequency.?

This is temporary just to get the quirks out, then I will build a nicer enclosure:

Forgot to mention, I was also using baking soda along with fevi-quick ( cyanoacrylate based ) this combination of white-cement bonds almost anything instently but real bad for electronics in long run...

I glued mine down to try to help with the drift, but I have been unable to get the coverage above 7150 with the trimmer.? Should I remove a turn to make it higher?
