js8call no transmit V3 64bit
Is anyone successfully running JS8Call on an sBitX with V3 64bit Field Day (2024) update? Obviously I am not.
Symptoms
no transmit - the JS8Call screen turns red indicating transmit but their is no RF output on the external power meter. When I run fldigi I see output so it is a JS8Call or settings issue.
no heartbeat icon - as seen in the image, there is a CQ icon and it works but their is no Heartbeat icon
very crowded screen - as seen in the image, the screen is very crowded. fldigi has as much on it but the keys and images are smaller as befits the screen size. ?

Thank you, Gyula. That? did not solve it. I tried again calling CQ and switched to the sBitX display and it seems JS8Call did not switch the sBitX into transmit.You got me to thinking so I looked at my setting on my station computer (RasPi4) to my 7300 and saw it was PTT CAT and Mode Data/Pkt. I switched the Pi on the sBitX to that and it transmitted. I was heard and had a QSO. PSK Reporter shows reception in Italy and Germany, 3,000+ miles, 7,700+km so I am now getting out. ?
Now I have the mystery of why most of the buttons are grayed out and that the buttons are so large that they are difficult to use on this small screen. That is likely a discussion for the JS8Call forum.

Of course it is. The solution depends on small things. At first glance, in my writing, the audio path is provided by Loopback_1. You can check it, because without it you won't have any output sound. The rest of the additional things are just as necessary as the route. These have already been discussed many times, summarized as setting up an external application. I find that if the information is not given individually, very few people bother to look it up in the forum discussions. I am tired of repeating what was said here in the answers given to the questioner.
If I see a mistake in the message, I will indicate it to the person asking. --

The issue, Gyula, is that the information is scattered across so many messages and various wikis. There were 252 V3 64bit messages the last time I looked. You have to have just the right search terms to find what you are looking for. I spent an hour looking for the JS8Call settings for the sBitX and found nothing.

I'm sure it's out there but it's very well hidden. I'm a retired technical writer so I can consolidate some of this but I can't find a person(s) who are the center of this to volunteer. And maybe no one wants consolidation.

I for one, would love to have the data consolidated as well. I dont run the non-native programs because I don’t understand enough about it to figure it out. That is why i only run the native FT8 mode only. I would live to use FT4 in the field too, but the intel is not readily available in a digestible manner. Thank you for the offer and maybe someone will take you up on it.? David WK4DS On Sun, Aug 18, 2024 at 13:12 Bruce W4BRU via <w4bru=[email protected]> wrote:

I know, for me, the understanding of how information is stored and retrieved on this forum/chat/email string/data base thing, makes it necessary for me to make notes as I go. This, however I have slacked off doing because of so many chores and projects with the home recently. But, as time permits, I want to try printing and saving lots of this. I think the frustration comes from every new person coming on here beginning at square one with a unit needing several updating mods, and training as to how to operate the radio. A quick start guide to get all new owners up to speed, at least on the JJ 64bit, would be nice to make, but I am still learning also. It will happen eventually. I mostly try to stay in the background,? since my expertise in sdr is quite low. ? Scotty WD4PYT? On Sun, Aug 18, 2024, 2:19 PM Bruce W4BRU via <w4bru=[email protected]> wrote:

JJ, I would gladly help with your wiki documentation on a limited basis if I knew how. Is there a wiki on how to use wiki? At this point, I would probably make it worse, but I am willing to learn and try. ? 73, Scotty WD4PYT? On Sun, Aug 18, 2024, 4:50 PM JJ - W9JES via <w9jes=[email protected]> wrote:

JS8Call settings for sBitx V4.0 64Bit :
?
[Radio] tab -> Rig: Hamlib NET rigctl
[CAT Control] tab -> Network Server: 127.0.0.1:4532
[Rig Options] tab -> PTT Method = CAT
[Rig Options] tab -> Mode = Data/Pkt
[Rig Options] tab -> Transmit Audio Sourse = Front/Mic
[Rig Options] tab -> Split Operation = None
[Audio] tab -> Modulation Soundcard
Input:? plughw:CARD=Loopback,DEV=1? ? ?Left
Output: plughw:CARD=Loopback_1,DEV=0? ?Both

Set your preferred operating frequency under the "Control" menu, as that will set up sBitx correctly ...
?
When using JS8Call with the 7in touch screen, I find it best to turn OFF the frequency/clock banner - Find that under the "View" menu ...
?
Any other settings are "as required" as they are for personal needs ...

Awesome, thank you for the settings and the recommendations.? I tried that setup and receive an error when transmitting.? This is a stock sbitx and the OS is reporting that this is the 32 bit image and after updating sbit it shows a version of 3.021.? My understanding is that an update to version 4.0 requires writing a new image to an sd card followed by an sbit software update.? This would align me with the 64 bit image and version 4.0.? That should be pretty easy.? I tried following these instructions for the 64 bit image but that link no longer works and I'm not finding another image available. ?/g/BITX20/message/109499

I'm trying to stand this up for field use in a trip I'm taking later this week.? I've got through Monday to figure it out.? I'm not familiar with this method of cat control.? It looks like the ham library stands up a daemon service api listening on a port.? I wonder if the port might be different somehow and maybe the cause of the failure.? IDK, that error seems to relate to a/b splitting or something.

Kevin,
you cannot try the program itself, because you have to start sbitx first, then the desired application, otherwise the error message will appear. If you start it without sbitx (radio), an error message will appear. If you want to change the application, first reboot the OS, then rebuild the sbitx and run applications. The 64-bit version was 3.02 at the beginning of March, and a lot has changed since then. Currently, image has v3.1 and you can install 4.0 on it. --

Hmm, the sBitx application seems to be automatically running after bootup via the startup.sh script.? I'm assuming that the application is this window that pops up with the waterfall.?
I restarted from cmd line, it booted up, this window/app opened, then I ran js8call, and the error is popping up again.
