Re: Music across all bands #ubitxv6 #antennas

Wanted to share an update with the group as I've made multiple posts over the past year regarding BCI, filters, music, etc.? I finally did complete and install a BCI filter.? After having the uBITX v6 for over 1.5 years I FINALLY made my first contact (first ever HF contact).? It was 3km away! (about 2 miles, but km is a bigger number, hi hi!)

True story, but in all seriousness, I got great feedback on my audio and after that, I was able to make a few contacts and even DX to a contest station over 4,000 miles (not km) away.

Radio is working fantastic now!? I am enjoying it.? Mostly on 20 & 40 and the EFHW is working well on both bands.? Thanks for all the guidance here, though I'm not going anywhere and I hope to catch you on the air.? I need some more practice, so don't ignore all the weak signals in the General portion of 20 & 40 as one of them might be me :)

Side note: after installing the BCI filter i was still hearing garbage instead voices.? I found a very strong ssb signal on 20 or 40 and calibrated the frequency against that for best audio.? Based on reports I've gotten, I think it worked out quite well, though may not be the recommended approach.

I did and while I don't know exactly what they should be (and too lazy atm to calculate) but all voltages around Q10/11/12 looked reasonable for npn transistors - good idea t check the Q30 etc group - I'll take a look tonight

Re: low audio (perhaps?) uBitx v6 - advice please #audiocircuit #v6

Check R18/R38 and see you get voltage at the Q10/Q30 collector.

With the original raduino and firmware and the volume at about half way, I can barely hear cw signals in cw mode, yet the side tone is much louder.
Also, I put in one of the ND6T AGC boards from kit-projects and have never seen any agc action even measuring with a DVM. I am using on-the-air signals as I don't have a signal generator - yet

Using Ashhar's wire probe trick for troubleshooting I get good response (not quite as loud as it appears to be in Ashhar's video, but that is not a real measure) from the antenna all the way to the base of Q10 in the if-amp. It drops to nearly zero at the collector and/or the emitted of Q12. This makes no sense to me as the noise is much higher "before" the if amp so it is clear that the amp (or something else) is passing the signal. I did a quick voltage check on the 3 transistors in the if amp any nothing looked weird.

I know others have simply used PC speakers to get the audio to a better level, which also works for me.

Do I have a problem or is all of this normal?

Re: low audio (perhaps?) uBitx v6 - advice please #audiocircuit #v6

See how your audio is with headphones. With a full size 40 meter dipole, loud broadcast signals on high end of band should blast your ears. For weak signals, even with audio agc, we must crank up the volume control. If your antenna is too small there isn't extra gain in ubitx to compensate.?

Speaker volume with a stock ubitx is normal to be scarce. I don't use its speaker much.?

After this, bfo calibration could be in play as Evan relates.?

BTW many get good results with that agc, but it didn't work for me. Keep in mind it should only suppress very large signals.?

Re: low audio (perhaps?) uBitx v6 - advice please #audiocircuit #v6

mlucia,

Have you replaced the Nano when you did the firmware upgrade?? If so, then all of the calibration data is on the original Nano.? You will need to redo the calibration per Ashhar Farhan's video:

The sensitivity is affected by the alignment of the 45MHz "roofing" filter with the 11.059MHz SSB filter.? This is done through the calibration process that Ashhar Farhan describes in his video.??

Signal level and the "noise" getting softer the closer you get to the audio section when using a wire antenna for testing would be normal.? As you get closer to the audio stages you have less amplification to increase the signal.? I would suggest that you try calibrating the radio IF you changed the Nano.? If not, then I would not do the calibration as the values worked before.

Are you sure you have the correct firmware for the v6?? There are different firmware versions available, some that were designed for the versions prior to v5.? The SSB filter frequency changed at version 5 so it is important that you get the correct version.

The last thing to try would be to jumper out the AGC board to see if that is impacting the received signal.

It helps us help you if you can include the new firmware name and version.? It also helps us if you can state what test equipment you may have as often there are quick ways to isolate the problem if you have things like oscilloscopes and RF probes.

HF Signals Antuino in good condition #forsale

Anyone in the US needing or wanting an HF Signals Antuino?

I have one surplus to my needs that I'd like to sell.? Due to shipping restrictions these days, I can only ship to US locations, so that's probably the limiting factor.? I'm asking $90 (includes priority mail shipping to US addresses).

Interested?? Contact Jim, W0EB via email (w0eb [at] cox dot net) for details.

I recently bought an unfinished uBitx V6 with a 5" Nextion display through eBay. Unfortunately the display did not work (serial interface not working) and I had to flash the OOTB software and use the 2.8" display. With that I considered the uBitx as essentially unusable, due to the very slow display updates.
Then I found your software, flashed it and found a completely new uBitx! Fantastic work, no reason any longer, to buy a Nextion display.?
CAT interface is also working great with the WSJT-X software and the memory functionality as well as the configuration functions in the menu are really helpful. No need for me to look for another display or a faster processor.
Many thanks, providing this to the group.?

Re: Increase uBitx to 25 watts internal or external amp with 12v supply for portable use

Hi Dave,
I built one if these ?13 MiniPAs. After playing around with drive and bias, frying a set of mosfets, adding a keying circuit, LPF, heatsink, fan and adding a third resistor, it works reliably, putting out just over 50w.
I'm certainly NO expert constructor, but I learnt stuff in the exercise, and gained considerable satisfaction in the final operation. Recommended.

Hi Dave,

The cheapest and easiest way to achieve ~20w output is to supply a higher voltage to just the PA part of the uBitx.? For version 3-5 at least there is a separate input pin on the PCB for supplying a different voltage to the PA. I don't have a v6 so cannot tell if that has a similar design, but even if it doesn't it should be easy to look at the schematic and find a suitable place for cutting a track and supplying a separate PA voltage.?
I have a Li-ion battery pack for portable use, it is around 18-20v and with this I get around 20-25w output on the lower bands which is what I use. I have added an internal 7812 12v regulator to feed the 12v input with 12v from same battery, this needs to be mounted on metal in order to have cooling, and i have done the same with the 7805 5v regulator on the radiuno?which I found to get a bit hotter than what I find comfortable. One could use DC-DC converters instead, but there is a high risk of interference from them so beware.

Do NOT supply 20v to the entire uBitx as that will let the magic smoke out.

Even without modifying to have a single power input, having 2 battery packs for separate voltages should be cheaper than an external PA....
