Re: Gtk-WARNING: cannot open display (./sbitx)

The odd thing is that it worked a week ago. Figuring it is a software problem I burned a new image to a new se card and did a new build so that sbitx is now v1.1 but the problem persists. Could it be a hardware issue? ?I¡¯ve rechecked the 40 pin connector. It¡¯s fine. Also the connection to the display board would seem to be good because the screen displays the GUI perfectly. I know very little about Gtk, so adding code to generate debugging messages isn¡¯t very practical.?

sbitx outputs a few messages on stdout, but nothing of real significance (yet). ?The error you¡¯re seeing is (obviously) from the Gtk library and it¡¯s having problems with Xwindows. ?I¡¯m just not sure what. ?It¡¯s acting like it can¡¯t connect to the Xwindows server. ?That can happen when one launches an X11 app in another tty, but you¡¯re clearly launching within a terminal session within Xwindows. ?I¡¯m stumped at the moment.

Re: Sbitx #165 received today, thoughts.

Raj,

That C14 tests suggest that K9 relay is either in NC state at the wrong times
along with U3 or enough leakage though to make a big high power oscillator.

Do we know if any of the relay coils have diodes across them??

Re: Tx oscilation

I have seen this as well on mine and its under investigation.
Try a lower PWR setting (should be called drive) and also?
dropping the mic level.

Raj,
I am aware of Farhan's C14 test, have looked and tested.?
The question is why is that happening.? ?I have ideas that?
?have been shared.? ?And doing my own investigation.

Due to reading everything I was aware the finals issue so initial
startup was very carefully conducted.? Now I'm into hunting
down a fix.

Tx oscilation

Hi,??
Today I noticed that when releasing the ptt on cw or after speaking on ssb, there is a huge momentary oscilation at a lower frequency.?

Readjusting the bias for both driver an finals eliminated this condition on the lower bands. But it still present above 18mhz.

New sBitx development

I received a email early this morning saying that my sBitx DE had shipped, then on the tails of that email I received another saying:

Hello Joel,
?
By now you would have got a mail from HF Signals and DHL as well saying your order has been shipped. However some fast paced developments today forced us to withdraw the shipments just after they were handed over to the delivery agents. This decision had to be taken quickly so we just withheld the shipments and the delivery agents were instructed to drop it off at the office so our delivery guys could go and collect it back.
?
Now you must be aware of many of the PA Finals blowing and as Farhan has been carrying out extensive tests to find out why the radio is behaving this way stumbled upon the fact that the voltages at the gate of the PA transistor were unusually higher than expected. This discussion presently is going on in the forum and you must be aware of it. Anyway Farhan scheduled a meeting immediately with the team and a decision was taken to stop all the dispatches as a new work-around that Farhan has come up with has now got to be installed in these Main board sets. For these we are procuring fresh sets of boards from the factory with these modifications installed and tested extensively over the next week or so before we could start dispatching these kits again. It is towards these upgrades that we have had to take this painful decision of withdrawing the kits including those which were on the way for delivery and we now have to wait for a fresh set of boards which are due to arrive by the middle of next week.
?
We are truly sorry for this development. We will keep you updated and if you have any further query please do write to us.
?
Thanks and regards,
?
Thomas

I am very happy about this, I will now get one with the new RF board in it, I am more than happy to wait.

Thanks. I was hoping someone had already done that and was willing to share their file. Also, I think it may be possible to replace the build file with a make file that VSCode¡¯s CMake extension can run directly.

Hi all,

Sorry, but I can¡¯t find the files for the toroids and the variable inductor.

Re: Sbitx #165 received today, thoughts.

Allison,

Farhan discovered this spike on his sBitx. The wave goes down and rises rapidly

and very high before settling down quickly. Enough to blow the finals.

Disconnect C14 and see if that cures it.. the charging and discharging during RX/TX

changeover is? an issue.

My first sBitx #9 was connected to the 20A shack PS after I smoked something in RX.

Due to some unfortunate accident and vertigo could not fix it.

The next one #163 I connected to 2.5A PS just to be safe !!

This one sometimes starts and everything displays fine except it doesnt show

any signals and a reboot cures everything, I can live with that but a delay in

start may fix it.

Raj,

I suspect its has to do with the startup state of the Rpi and the peripherals
it talks to.? By nature its undefined in many cases.

If I arrange power to the Rpi and front panel separate from main board
I do not see the current spike on startup (powering the main board).
So it appears something wants to start in an undefined state at
power up and causes a current spike.? Its likely the IO that drives Q10
(TX enable power).

Next thing I'll try is disable TX command line to the main board and see
if it starts up without current pulse.

Systems I've done in the past have a generated signal called
Delayed-power-good that is used to inhibit anything that can
do unacceptable actions until the MPU or whatever is stable
and takes command.? Its usually a very trivial circuit like a RC
and? gate as a schmitt trigger with a time less than 1 second.

Re: SBitx current draw?

I suggested the name change from "Power" to "Drive" which is appropriate.

Reason is it may not be putting out 6W but far more.

I found no real correlation between front panel power setting and what came out.
The BIRD-43 wattmeter was indicating for 6W depending on band up to 30W!

Based on measurements I've made and the efficiency of the amps
72W in was likely around 15 to 25 watts out.

At highest power I've seen 63W before the current limit kicked in
at 10A (130W in at 13V).

It is also like many 100W radios at lower power setting the current needed for
low power is remarkably high.
