Re: the cause for the spurs, found!

If one swaps the 3904s for BFR106s in the transmit side amp, is it a transistor swap, or will the job also require re-biasing?

I'm wondering if I should try this, or if it would be better to stay on the porch until the adults report back?? ;)?

Thanks!

Farhan,

For the 45mhz amp the only part suggested was BFR106 or maybe 2n2369/mmbt2369.
I'd not use 2n2222 there but its better than 3904.? Any suggestion of of 2n2222A would
have been in the power amp area predriver or driver.

Hello!

I read that i could use a CAT interface, but how do i have to wire it? Or does it use the USB port of the radiumo?

FT8

Hello,

I heard about one or several other QRP kits that come with FT8 in the radios OS. ?Is FT8 something that can be worked in to a Micro-Bitx with a phone or PC For time and display but without a sound-card interface?

Thanks,

Re: Bitx 40 12 volt power plug-in connector help please 4 wires go to? I'm getting stuck trying to figure out , 2 black I assume are grounds, the brown 12 volt positive, don't know where the red go's Thanks for any help.

Wording in the instructions may be a bit confusing.? The 4th wire is for connecting separate DC power
to the RF PA section.? This lets you use higher voltage on the transmitter output stage than the 12V
used for other parts of the rig.

Arv
_._

Step 2: DC Power Connections

The DC power from the socket goes to the board through the on/off switch on the volume control. From the ON/OFF switch, route the power a?parallel connection also goes to the transmitter power amplifier. This is kept as a separate connection on the board so that you can feed the power amp with a higher voltage.

  • Use a two-wire connector as shown in the diagram¡¯s upper right side to supply +12v power to the board.
  • The brown wire should go to +12V line from the power supply and the black wire should go to ground line of the power supply.
  • The supplied DC socket can be hooked to the DC power lines. The large pin on the DC socket is the postive line (see the picture below
  • You may route the positive power line through the ON/OFF switch on the volume control
  • Use another PA POWER line to feed power to the Power Amplifier. This is shown on the top-left part of the wiring diagram

Nope. But if you put the psk output back into the radio and see the
crud re-appear, you know where to look!

I know of people with scopes...I'll ask one of the technically sophisticated radio engineers (we have a few) in the local club to take a look at it. They have scopes and smarts.

Is this fixable, or just a feature of the design??
It doesn't look to me to be the radio.

I've had good digital QSO's above 80m,
so I know it works (flaws and all...) with jt8, and all the other digital modes, for which I am VERY thankful.?
Wait. This crud only appears on psk? Then it's something with your
computer program or audio card levels; Something else is going on and
not with the radio.

Fortunately, the digital modes are very forgiving of marginal signals....hahaha.

Re: 80m hexfet power amplifier by W7ZOI

Mark McNabb

Paul,

LPF inductors are normally wound on powdered iron toroids.? Either type 6 or 2 would do, as long as you attain the proper inductance.? You can use the calculator on toroids.info for that.? For this power level, 1/2" or larger size would be needed.

Evan,

The original poster was intending to use this amp on other rigs.

Daniel,

As noted before, the design you posted is for CW not SSB.? For moving to other bands, not just the LPF would need to be changed, but also the frequency trap on the receive side.

Mark.

Re: 80m hexfet power amplifier by W7ZOI

Sorry for the Noob question, but why would you go from a class AB push/pull PA to a single linear biased device and expect more power?? Could you not just increase the PA supply voltage on the uBitx finals to get the same result???

Re: 80m hexfet power amplifier by W7ZOI

I really like the 40/20 design posted by back in 2017.?

I may be missing something, but I don't see any specifications on the filter toroids other than inductance. Are additional specs available?

Thanks and 73

Hi Greggory ( Geogory Peck )

Nice documentation,

I wish to suggest that the wires leads of 8 lead RMC, 3 Lead and 2 lead can all be bunched meaning plaited ( like a girls hair )

This helps in easier routing and soldering leads to respective points , saving a lot of time & confusion tracing & tracking.

Will share pictures to you direct & you could ?include in your documentation if you feel its worth sharing

Thanks & 73

Karsten, I have created a mini builder's manual for the ubitx, it just basically compiles the assembly instructions and firmware functions into a pdf file for easier reading. Hopefully this helps you out a little bit. If theres any specific use case you need covered, feel free to ask me and I will do my best to add it into the pdf.

Re: ?BITX: Documentation

?Thanks for the documentation.? Hopefully it fills in some of the gaps I was thinking about.? I'm in the process of building mine but have stopped for a few days.? I noticed on the original it made assumptions and left out details that were made.?? I do have a suggestion though.? On the images resize them in both directions.? When you stretched them you made them wider but that distorted them.

Thanks

Re: Tool Tips -- rectangular holes

I don't have a nice graphic, but I drill a hole just inside the corner of 2 opposing corners then use a coping saw to cut just inside the outline I make on the metal surface. If needed I touch the opening up with a file.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but here goes...
In a recent post, looking for a 40M QRP SSB kit, Fred (K3TXW) explained, "...I have problems making a rectangular hole in a piece of aluminum of exactly the right size, with the edges exactly parallel to the edges of the case. I inevitably make the opening too big or slightly wavy. The result screams "homebrew carelessness" though I'm not careless. Maybe there is a rectangular punch or something to do this right, but I don't have such a tool; I use a set of files."

In addition to files for work on front panel fabrication, I recommend an electronics shop include:

1.? A drill press with a chuck that will accept 0.50-in.-diameter bits.? Harbor Freight sells a couple of bench-top units for under $100.? Put a magnet on the base as a place to keep the chuck wrench.? (It's usually best to clamp work to the drill press table.)? Once you have a drill press you'll find many other jobs for it.
2.? A good set of sharp drill bits.? Bits with a titanium nitride coating remain sharp for a long time.
3.? A step drill bit.? I use an Irwin Tools Unibit 3/16-Inch to 7/8-Inch Step-Drill Bit with a 3/8-Inch shank.? Great tool when you need to make larger holes for controls or to start a rectangular cutout.
4
.? An Adel-brand metal nibbler.? They show up on Ebay.? Or buy a new one at .? I've used one since I was a teenager and couldn't work on chassis or panels without it.

Lay out your hole with masking tape around the outside.? To make a rectangular hole (see attached image) I use a step bit and smaller bits to make round holes that remove a lot of metal.? Just don't get too close to the rectangle's edges.? Next I use the nibbler to remove remaining metal close to, but not at, the rectangle edges.? Finally I clamp the panel or chassis in a bench vise so an edge of the hole aligns with the top of the vise jaws.? File away any remaining metal until the edge is parallel with the vise jaws.
