Re: raduino 1.28.1 stuck in fine tuning mode #bitx40help #firmware #radiuno

Well, that was supposed to read "7.125 LSB".

Solved, sort of...
Turns out that nothing on D port works. I redefined all the unused (so far) inputs onto the analog DOT pin and now everything that can be done with the function button alone works great and I have a working radio again. It's some hardware problem somewhere and nothing to do with the fine software version. I never knew the problem before since the code shipped didn't use anything on that port. I'll need to figure out at least one more input as I really would like to get SPOT working as well.?

Thanks for the ideas, 73 Ed.T aa2mz

Thanks Allison.?? picture worth a thousand words.....

Re: Simple spur fix

Don,
?short answer NO.?? I need to spend some more time getting the matching correct. But I am yet to actually modify my uBITX at all really. Even so I don't think there is a defintive answer to what the 45MHz filter mod is doing.? Possibly the loss is helping things as Allison says, not the filter itself..

Glenn

Did you ever get to run those Toyocom filters with a good matching transformer or did you change over to the other 45mhz filters ?

Re: [BITX40] Replacement Raduino Board

?You can try sending an email to Farhan about getting a replacement Raduino.

?I am planning to build the same thing, more or less, using an UNO, or a MEGA 2560 with aSi5351a (or whatever the number is) and using code already there, maybe modifying if I manage to get to that point.
?There are other units that can be used in place of a raduino, as has been pointed out.
?I'm still figuring out parts of what I want to do.

Gordon,

I thought that protocol was dead.

Broad terms many modes do not tolerate extreme distortion. Others are designed
to tolerate it or work despite? distortion.

Glenn,

I have added that image to the wiki.? Makes it easier to find.

Re: raduino 1.28.1 stuck in fine tuning mode #bitx40help #firmware #radiuno

Okay! D4 is low and I don't know why. I traced it back to the mcu just fine and doesn't appear shorted either.?

I haven't connected anything to it, have only connected the FB and I looked I the code and it is initialized to pull up...

If I pull the pin high externally, the screen (only) shows "7.125 USB" and nothing works.?

I'm going to verify that I have a working D4 and if not, assign SPOT to a different pin.

That's my best guess for now ! aa2mz

Re: Free Antenna Book

?As far as I know, unless it is on the ARRL web site as a free download to anyone, not just members, then it IS still copyrighted.
?I have seen many books in the library where I used to live, including many ARRL books.
?Was one antenna book by William Orr (I think that is his first and last name) that I used to take out as often as I could, till one day it vanished, like somebody managed to take it out without checking it out.
?I would have been willing to buy a copy, but never found it available anyplace I looked for it.
? One of my favorite things is figuring out and building antennas, mainly Dipoles, Inverted Vees, verticles (simple mono band), plus? beams, from 2 element on up.
?I have a few projects, when I get to them, including rebuilding a couple of TV antennas, maybe adding a part for 2 meters. One is a rather large VHF only that needs elements redone.
?I need 2 things for TV antennas here. One is getting it up higher, as I am in a wide valley, with an escarpment several miles north that I need to get over, and more gain.
?Not to mention a higher gain UHF antenna.
?I installed TV antennas in the Rochester NY area in the 70's, and many were a VHF with a UHF added just above or below it. With the VHF fed through the UHF, then to? balun.
?They worked rather well, and still can.
?But I would also like to figure a way to combine a 2 meter, with a 1 1/4 meter, and a 70Cm all as one unit
?I can use an antenna switch to change from one radio to another.
?But I digress from the topic here.

?Unless there is a legal notice that the book in question has been mde publicdomain, and as such, free to copy and give away, then it should not have been posted here.

Seriously though I thought this was an out of date book and the OP of the book had fixed it with the ARRL that a web link was ok.
Now it is contorted as a? Spy who came in from the Cold novel? what with with Trolls, billy goats under the bridge, Giraffes and books having copyright pages removed.? I was? a bit suspicious when I found that the book could be searched with control-F. .. yet the photos seem so crummy, almost like scans.? So it goes.

I doubt if I will be going to hell over this...(anyway it was my twin brother who made the OP). BTW the chapter on dipoles (the reason I went sniffing for such a? book a priori ) has some very good information on how bad dipoles below? lambda/4 are.. for people who are height constrained,? it makes sad reading. Allison, visualising your mods can be handy....

Re: raduino 1.28.1 stuck in fine tuning mode #bitx40help #firmware #radiuno

Hi Ed,
did you install the SPOT/FINE button?
It seems as if the SPOT button is pressed (switch closed) all the time.
It should be normally open.
Could be a bad switch or incorrect wiring.

Using a DVM, measure the voltage at pin D4 (connector P3)
see
Voltage should be HIGH (over +4V) when SPOT button is NOT pressed, and LOW (almost 0V) when the button is pressed.

also if you add caps across wire do it at the board not the far end of the wires!

You have to unsolder the relays to do this.? No Ifs maybe or yabuts.? Everything under them goes but beware
you are notonly modding the RF, also the audio and DC paths.

FYI someone look and see if added pages in the wiki are visible to them I see them.

Very fast Allison. I added something yesterday and it was instant.

The WIKI though is probably not known by most .io members i think. Certainly I was not aware of it here or on any other group I am in. I mostly browse using my cell phone so the existance of Wiki was always puzzling.

For those who don't know and don't read on-line, the Wiki is available on this Groups .io page on the left side, at the bottom.

What version code did you load?? there are many and some are better than others.

I have no idea how long it takes for edited pages to sow up in the wiki.

They are there or at least framework.

raduino 1.28.1 stuck in fine tuning mode #bitx40help #firmware #radiuno

Hi all!

Searched but could find anything:

My raduino comes up in fine tuning mode and I can't get it out of that mode.
The function button does nothing but is connected since holding it during a power up does the expected factory reset.

BTW, bootloader on my nano didn't work so I programmed it with ISP, downloaded and verified fine.

Any ideas on what to look for would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much, Ed.T aa2mz

Re: Ubitx evolving fixes updated to wiki? #ubitx #ubitx-help

Tim and KG9rb...

>>that makes sense. so you are saying remove all the copper trace thats under the relay positions, remount them and hard ?wire them to the connections to the filters?

Yes all the traces under the relays plus how they are wires are the source of much pain.? By installing them from the
underside its easier to wire the filters cleanly.? Short direct wires (about 26ga) do the job.

Basically it the relays switch the signal differently so there is less contact overlap.

>>pretty good idea.so I'm understanding that this takes care of all the harmonics problems? yes spaghetti wiring under other components especially in the rf section plays havoc. are you leaving the original filters alone?

As tested yes, much better.

Actually no.? Values do not change but I found if you swap the physical locations of the 80M and 10M filter?
you can then put the 10M filter last and leave it in so it does not need a relay to switch in it since it does
not exist (have 3 need 4).

Also K3 done not switch the audio people were getting feedback and cruft that way.? There are issues
around the RF switching with K1 as well? there is a routing of RF from the filter and TR back to next
to Q90 the TX preamp (gah!)!

Its basically in the wiki.

Apparently the intermodulation distortion was not so great that it made it impossible for my signal to be recognized.

I has to be seriously bad to even hear it.

My 20M HB rig has the 'ZOI clipper in the IF.? On average it clips the DSB signal of the balanced modulator
by 13-15db.? The DSB signal at that point has severe flat tops on a scope.? After the filter (10pole commercial
lattice filter) all of the out of band stuff is stripped.? At most the average use comments on good talk power
and a few have asked if I'm running a compressor.? The in band (2.7khz) IMD is in the maybe -15dbc for
two tone source.

Add to that a audio compressor.... more for keeping the drive to a reasonable level.

Since its all inside the 2.7khz there is no splatter or other out of band artifacts.? Its an old trick and very effective.
But the average station rarely even notices it is seriously compressed.? ?Since the peak to average is so high
I've been told I'm running at least 100W and my power is a lie about the power (4W single tone) onto a
2 element beam (2/3rds of a Ta33jr).?

FYI in the audio world unless it is critical listening people rarely notice if the THD is over 3%.? Which happens
to be about -15db.??
