I would put the 7805 on the back side and add steering diode and some filtering. It can lay flat out of the way. Not all the voltage drop needs to be across the 7805.?? A 1 watt resistor 33 to 47

I built mine in late 2016. I didn't see the mod for the 7805. Is its purpose to keep the device cool? What are any other benefits? I may add it...or leave well enough alone. Thoughts?
