Re: Suggestion for the NEW UBITX V7.
Ashar,
?
yes ,
i believe it was jack purdum i was responding to with a general answer. I personally want to thank you for your dedicated hard work for the ubitx. I use mine everyday. Ive changed the software that was listed on the forum ,by n8me. it works great. And if you didnt have a color display, but just a display like the bitx 40, it would be fine with me, since alot of hams are capable of modding their own equipment and can add that feature if they want. Like my ubitx, ive added an internal antenna tuner.took a ldg auto tuner and removed it out of its box and mounted it just below the top lid. removed the speaker and ran the speaker wires to the back to an audio jack so i can have the option of external speaker or not.only thing i havent added internally is my LPF i have in a box with a multiposition rotary switch to switch LPF for each band i use. Its external but hey it works.I purchased the LPFs off qrp labs website.
?
anyway ashar, thank you for a great product and am waiting for your next radio to come out in the future.

Date: Fri, 5 Nov 2021 08:41:43 +0530 David, I am not sure which mail of Jack (Purdim, I presume?) you are referring to. uBitx was the answer to a multiband rig for less than 100 dollars when scratch built, that was was easy to tune and source. I wasn't very pleased with adding the colour display. It doesn't add a single feature to the rig and adds another 20 dollars to the price.
After playing with 27 MHz crystals, it is clear to me that an SSB filter can be built at 27 Mhz. In that case, it should be easy to build a simpler multiband rig if you throw 10 meters under the bus. Someone should attempt it.

Like Farhan I do not see those screens as an improvement. I am happy enough with my V3. I made some changes to get it compliant regarding harmonics and other spurii, tamed the sidetone, and such things. I don't like the built-in keyer and I always use a stand alone keyer or straight key and have been practicing with a bug. I am considering a scratch build with still fewer "features". I have had the opportunity to compare my homebrewed steel box cabinet with a couple of other uBitX rigs and mine is smaller. I cannot put the assembled uBitX into nor remove from the box. I have to disassemble it and then install/remove the individual boards. I don't want any "features" that require more real estate. And maybe cost more. I have some radios here that do not have a direct reading dial but only a logging dial (zero to one hundred style). Compared to those the two line LCD in the V3 is a real *luxury* :) 73, Bill? Thomas and Farhan,
If color were the only addition to the stock display, then I would agree with Farhan that it is not much value-added.? The display on the v6 also adds more screen real estate AND a touchscreen.? Those are usability features that do make operation easier.? With the above, you still get to the point of cost vs feature.? If on a very tight budget, then putting up with the extra twists, pushes,? and more limited information, then the extra cost of the v6 screen does not add any signal in or out improvement. I was sorry to see the v5 bare-bones kit discontinued.? I much prefer the added features of a Nextion display, so if I were to purchase a uBitx now I would be throwing away the stock display to be replaced with the Nextion.? The other option is to discard the Raduino and substitute one with a Teensy MCU to allow for feature addition. Above are my opinions and observations.? They may be in error, so use them at your own risk. 73 Evan AC9TU?? |

Re: Suggestion for the NEW UBITX V7.
JAck,
i fully agree with you. I bought my v6.1? and am very happy with it. with my budget, 1200 is almost my income. Even though its tight i buy qrp ft8 rigs, build qrp cw rigs, etc. been a qrper since late 70s. main rig was hw-8 and a tube transmitter homebrew with a 6t9 tube putting out about 6 watts with a homebrew antenna tuner. even if i had the money, which i did when i was younger, i wouldnt pay that much for a radio.1200? or more? maybe for someone else, but i look on the internet :qth, ebay, etc, and when these superstar payers get hard up,i see alot of expensive radios being offered for sale to recoup the money they lost. keep up the good work ashar!!!! and maybe put out some add on boards. but other than that, in my world, the rig is best left alone since alot of hams in other countries the ubitx is their only main radio for their hobby and for emergency communications. 73 David ac9xh good thru hamcall and qrzcq.com dont do qrz.com due to their exploitation of our info |
uBITX and BITX40 Make Great POTA Rigs!
Last month I spent 3 weeks at our cabin in OK.? I only needed to drive about 1/4 mile up the road to be within the borders of the Ouachita National Forest so I decided it was time to activate a park!? After the first attempt with the Hamtenna mounted on the trailer hitch didn't go so well I took the MJJ-2240 Stealth Dipole (2 Hamtennas on a special mount), a 10' pole, and a roof mount type tripod.? That worked great!? Over a two week period I activated 5 times and logged right at 200 contacts with 10W SSB!? My furthest was a P to P contact to park VE-1693 in Ontario!? I also worked Panama, Italy, Brazil, and Puerto Rico with the uBITX at the cabin with inverted Vee.? I very rarely turn the "100 watt rigs" on anymore...
Several months back I remember somebody proclaiming that QRP SSB was not worth it but I say, "Not so!" 73, Justin B. KI5GKD |
Arnie (and others who don't understand why), It was designed that way so the back of the display would not short out against any of the metal on the NANO.? It used to be on the front, but people had problems with it shorting against displays mounted to the front of the Raduino rather than connected with a ribbon cable.?? Jim, W0EB

Subject: Re: [BITX20] Beware - potential problem installing Nextion on uBitx v6 #nextion #homebrew THanks Justin. I usually have seen Nano's with the pins mounted from the bottom of the board. The nano that came with the ubitx v6 had the pins mounted on the opposite side of the board, which makes the onboard LEDs face the Raduino board and therefore not easy to see,? as compared to what is usually the case. Not sure why it was designed that way, but at least it did not take that long for me to figure out what the problem was. Life is for learning. 73 de Arnie W8DU |
UBITX Kit For Sale
While rummaging around in my storage I found a Ver3 UBITX Kit in the original box. I remember testing this board previously and the Raduino with my working UBITX and found it operating. The only thing is it has the WX version of the TDA2822M audio amplifier which is the one that would fail so I¡¯m including a replacement chip and socket with this sale. I¡¯m asking $115.00 which includes shipping, I¡¯ll take PayPal.

Farhan's Amazing Knack Story: From a Boyhood SW Receiver to the Design of the sBITX SDRJust finished watching this. Great presentation of practical radio knowledge for experimenters and builders.? I really liked the practical test and measurement techniques that were done with minimal equipment. A throwback to the earlier ham radio days, but still practical today. I especially liked the practical knowledge of crystal filters and how simply adjusting the impedance in and out is a practical way to adjust the ripple in the passband.? Then jumping ahead to the current state of the art, Ashhar's very practical explanations of his new SDR radio. Why using the FFT function makes SDR filtering easy for hams to experiment with. And explaining FFT in a ham friendly way that did not leave you glassy eyed from long explanations of "butterfly" transforms. Also, good to know, SDR design can simplify radio designs in additional ways, like it is no longer needing to expend so much effort in designing RF chains that equalize the gain across the full range of ham bands. Just let the SDR software pick the right amount of drive or gain for the band you are using, based on a lookup table. Picked up a lot of good ideas and information watching this. Tom, wb6b |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello:? I red a previous message where an individual used a PC board attached to the back side of a Nection display. ? It suppose to have got rid of the display noise that was making ?it back in to the Ubitx receiver.
