Re: add yourself to the new BITX operators map

I¡¯ll have to try if my antenna is ok. AZ here!

Re: BITX40 Pop Fix

Ted,
I assume that you are using Windows as your OS.? If so, then I would suggest that you open the Device Manager through right-clicking on the Windows icon and selecting Device Manager. Open the Ports (COM & LP) and then connect your Nano.? The one that is added is the correct comm port.? (I did not have the Nano connected when I took the screenshot).

Also will need to set up the board:

And the Processor:

That should get you connected to the Nano.?

The cable is for a digital camera, mp3 player, to a computer so believe it is for data.

I have more setup to do.

Thanks

If it is a "Charging Cable" it may not have the data leads.

If it is a data cable it will work for both data and charging.?

You do have to select the correct Arduino model and the correct boot loader for things ro work properly.

You have to select the proper USB port on your operating system for it to talk to the Arduino.

Any thoughts?

I am not sure where you are having trouble, Ted. Do you get any error messages at the bottom of the IDE screen when compiling? Do you have the right USB port selected when connected to the Raduino?

My previous programming had been with Fortran on punched cards, then some Basic compiling on an old TRS-80, so the Arduino and C++ was totally new. When I started messing with firmware I found the "Raduino Software for Geezers" very helpful:
/g/BITX20/message/26522?p=,,,20,0,0,0::Created,,software+for+geezers,20,2,0,5045944
Once I sorted that out I was able to load Allard's sketch and then start modifying it to allow displaying an S-meter and voltmeter, and Allard was very helpful when I got stuck in the software.

Re: add yourself to the new BITX operators map

Reed,
I did not hear anything.? As with you, the noise level here is extremely high.? Can only hear a few high power stations every so often.

Thanks for trying.? Maybe we will have better luck tomorrow with the "BITX QSO party at 7:00 PM CDT.

Evan - Called for you just now on 7.277 (from WA). Nothing heard, so presumably no good path at the moment, or perhaps I just have too much noise here.

Anyone attending the QSO Today Expo?

Some of us will be presenters on this FREE, global, virtual event.

Subject pretty much say it all.? You are informally invited to play radio Wednesday 7/29 at 7pm (central daylight time) on 7.277.? I'll be yelling CQ BITX.? Yell back if you feel like it.

Re: uBITX V6 Expanded System

Well, yesterday I posted a Youtube vid of the radio and some of the added components, which included the tuner, power supply, SWR meter, etc.
I've been discussing the S-Meter with a few guys here. Wanting to keep the circuitry analog for future users, I didn't want to learn (and expect them to learn) the software code.? So, here's how I did it within the analog domain.
Thanks to all for your suggestions,

I'm really resisting the s/w route b/c this unit will be handled by club members. I want to keep the reliance on s/w confined to the original ver. The guys at the club can handle hardware, physical components, mods and repairs, but who knows what software capable club members may try or NOT try in the future. This way, if there's any probs, they can just refresh the original firmware and be done.
Anyhow, today I played with a couple of S-Meter circuits and where to tap the signal. I reasoned that since there is no AM carrier (dead air) to contend with that I could just calibrate a meter to the SSB and CW analog signals. Anyway, I got the meter to work very nicely and it behaves just like a regular Ham xceiver while receiving SSB. I'm using a high impedance input amp to get gain from the H side of the audio pot. That drives a 1N914 to a 10uF filter cap, then a 20K trim pot to the 500uA meter. It works perfectly. I played it side-by-side with a communications receiver to calibrate the trim pot. I'm happy and life is good. While I was at it, I added red and green LEDs thru a differential amp that indicate 'dead air' or 'signal present'. Now, when the rig is in the field I can tell if someone is calling...visually. Like when you take the headphones off to talk to your assistant (EmComm logger), or are just physically away from the radio. Flashing green means someone is calling.
Next step is adding another T/R relay to use the Preamp/Attenuator on receive.
Thanks everyone for your interest in helping us with this project.

Re: At my wit's end with this uBitx

Grover,

1 - Yes, the values are dependant on the Raduino and Mainboard
2 - No, as far as I know, the Memory Manager only works with the KD8CEC software.? There is a modification that can be made to the old stock software posted on his site, however, I do not believe there is enough memory available to add it to the v6 stock software.
3 - Yes, that is the correct file for both the v5 and v6 uBITX boards?
4 - There are not any files to load onto the Nano on the Raduino board.? You do need the correct tft file loaded on the Nextion display.? The wrong file for the display will not be recognized by the display.

There are two possible ways to transfer the calibration settings:
1 - use the same Nano and just overwrite the stock program with the KD8CEC program
2 - Record the values you set with the stock software on paper when you set them, and then use the Memory Manager software to write those values to the Nano.

Note:? The Frequency calibration has little impact on the receiver sensitivity.? Frequency adjustment is to ensure that the displayed value is accurate.? The BFO tuning has a HUGE impact on the receiver sensitivity.? ?Mis adjustment of that value can cause the sidebands to be reversed, or the received signal to fall outside of the filter passbands.

I would recommend that you try just the BFO tuning to start, and see if the dial is off.

I can't answer 3&4 because I don't have any experience with nextion screens. Related: you'll need to use the KD8CEC software if you use the nextion screen - there's no support for it in my software.

No, thank you!

Re: At my wit's end with this uBitx

Guys, I need to understand a couple of things because I'm certain that all this is unsuccessful calibration.

  1. Are the calibration numbers I'm getting from the stock software (6.1) transferable to Reeds software?
  2. Can I use Bitx Manager to do this?
  3. Am I using the right file for my 2.8" : ?? Nextion UBITXV5_CEC_V1.200_NX? ?
  4. Are there other files I should have loaded before this?

Inquiring minds want to know.
