¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks David, I wish I had a better case but I figured I have quite a few tinkering around before I get all the bug fixes and mods done. then ill find a more permanent metal home. I just purchased the 3.2 Nextion LCD and some parts to get the S-meter going using a LM358.Joe kd2nfc

notlarc,
i forgot to mention that i didnt have any rg8 or rg58 . know what i ran? rg6u. some guys will write pages about how you shouldnt do this? or that. use what u have and enjoy. you sound like me ,tight budget. in fact i have a dedicated 10 meter setup running rg6u cable. i have two verticles and one inverted vee and all are on rg6u cable. i use the twist on rg6 connectors and the f to pl259 connector adapters to connect to radio and tuner. i then use some rubber tape to keep the weather out. and ive used both types copper shield and aluminum shield. both work great. |

notlarc,
dont know if it helps but an online magazine called antentop has alot of alternative antenna builds.eh, spiral, etc. i had the same problem when i rented and built an antenna that was ,ibelieve called a balcony antenna. it used a short vert with loading coil and radials came out from a metal sheet the ham had in his living room. i personall used 22 guage wire and zig zagged it to get a dipole up and running.some guys have used pvc with the total length of each side of the dipole wound on pvc rods and fed to a tuner... i never built an umbrella antenna but heard of it.since ur area is small, put down some carpeting and underneath it, put down sheet metal the carpeting will hide ur counterpoise.:). that will give u some counterpoise and then buy or build a metal umbrella and feed it via a matching network and tuner. before i moved to my current location my family and i lived upstairs in an older house with aluminum guttering. i couldnt have visible antennas etc either. i was able to attach a small wire that i painted in two sections. one the brick red color and 2 the tan aluminum paint color of the gutters. needless to say, i worked alot of stations with my argonaut 509 and home brewed tuner using 12 guage house wiring as coil alligator clips to change inductance and an old 100 pf variable capacitor i scrounged from a junk radio. hope this helps. good luck 73s David ka9koj |

joe,
nice pics. i like ur thinking of using the plastic case. good idea. i was going to go that way but my 16 yr old son dragged out the shell of an old rig that was all metal.by the way if ur mike sounds good, use it.:) i m using an old cb mike i bought for 1 dollar at the salvation army store.great job!!!. i didnt have a mick connector like yours so i opted with supplied one. anyway love ur see thru theme !!!!! david ka9koj |

I'll admit, I am from the tube age, so I really need wire goes HERE type instructions.? And almost kit like mentality.? I put the radio down for decades and missed transistors, ICs, and Arduinos.

I have built an audio compressor for an Adafruit mic module to use with my uBitx. I was wondering what drive voltage will work well with the modulator. I was also wondering what is the input impedance of the modulator.

I¡¯ve made one phone QSO do far and a few WSPR beacons. Getting off to a good start so far. One thing that¡¯s noticeable is the I hear AM stations on the lower bands. Joe On Sep 18, 2018, at 9:28 PM, KD2NFC, Joe Puma <kd2nfc@...> wrote: |
Re: Dynamic mic on ubitx
I'm interested in communications, that said, this is a video that shows a lot of fine differences among inexpensive communications microphones. I have the Astatic d-104 and a Turner which looks almost identical to the Shure. Getting one of these microphones set up on a uBITX could produce some great results.?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EENHtVka4fQ

I have the kit as well, and can't figure out where to connect the IF input. Sunil says it goes to the first IF input.? Can anyone tell me where that is, what pin and component specifically that is.? I don't need a picture, but it couldn't hurt if you've got one opened up.? I'm using V3.
It should work well, but let me find the first IF input and I'll be the first to report. Eddie WA4JXL |
Re: UBITX Q90 mod with BFR106

good points but, first i never said there are laws stating the qrp levels . a novice knows this. dont think i mentioned the display either. mine is fine and as an old rf tech, im fully aware of the spurs and harmonics hence the shielded cable usage and filtering. why make a mountain out of a mole hill. i was running tube equipment way before the term qrp was associated with 5 watts. before ,,it was usually meant lower than 1000 or 500. 100, then 50 the 20 then 10 then 5. everyone has agreed in a gentlemans agreement to stay at 5 watts or lower. the ubitx is perfect for this. i also see alot of other super techs trying to make this radio out to be something it was not built to be . a full blown bells and whistles rig. its fine if you want to play surgeon but if the specs are brought down by simple shielding, filtering ,to acceptable levels by testing it on a spec analyzer, then go play with it. all radios have? fundamental problems. 1. the rig never satisfies the super tech ham . always wanting to push the limits. that is great because that is how we all learn and obtain new designs. im all for it. 2.the rig always has a quirk that some dont like? and will fight the companies to change. i feel that change is good but if someone is in alot of disagreement then rip it apart and rebuild it until finished. then publish the results and fixes. the rf amps have always been a problem for unique radio kits, but i find mine running at 4.5 to 5 watts to be pretty clean with my external filters and 45 mhz filter install.i was obviously making a general statement about the qrp levels. if you have been a ham for at least 25 years or more you will look back at the so called gentlemans agreement. always crank the power down to reduce splatter and interference to other fellow hams. foreign and domestic.etc. i have run 2.5 watts into a wire inverted vee 15 ft off the ground and obtained my 1000 miles a watt award running an argonaut 509 on ssb. i have ran 1/2 watt ssb on 40, 20,10 and have worked all states. took awhile but it can be done and its fun. ashar made this rig with a control pot for the power so he is fully aware some might try to run it like an old patcomm? or sgc2020 or try to feed it into a full "gallon amp".those are very popular but has some harmonic issues and spur issues too. ive seen this on new equipment that costs over 1000 and right out of the box. one suggestion i have is tone the sharks down . everytime someone makes a suggestion and they "feel" offended, then they start making jerk remarks towards the poster. when someone suggests something sometimes the suggestions just might work. just because someone else says it wont ever work, i say prove me wrong. i have made some suggestions and all i have received on this forum is snide side of face remarks. why is that? i have agreed with everyone on here about their theory and hypothesis. sometimes it takes a fresh approach, and a more simple outlook of the problem to solve . i aree with fred earliey yesterday. yes he is getting some resonance. so whats up with trying to make it sound like i said there is a law on qrp power? reading way too much into someones posts . i never said that. all i stated was most hams know that todays standards qrp is 5 watts or lower. plain and simple. as for the 10 meter filters, every band on my rig is getting filtered individually. why? because every radio no matter ho cheap or expensive puts out some unwanted signals. today alot of super techs think just because blah blah blah said its a solid radio and you spend 3000 for it does not mean you can relax ur obligation to clean your signal. that is law.every radio i have new or old gets external filters to make sure i knock the heck out of the bad ones. why do you think we have so much junk signals on the band? because everyone assumes their 3000 dollar rig is clean. crank the drive down, or change the amp circuit to be on another board inside the rig. simple. then if your still worried, rip all the relays and coils out and put them on another board too. maybe add some shielding. ohh and all interconnect wiring is shielded cable. done. as for everyone here on the forum. i agree totally with? what they are doing. i have 2 or 3 who have given me sour grapes responses to my posts.im only trying to pass on some experience i have.? this is the first forum ive been on that polices how you type ur posts and complains if your suggest anything. ive watched the posts about the long traces under the relays. all im saying is :cut the fricking traces, use mini coax to run to connections and either relocate the relays or put everything into an external box.nothing offensive. i guess i come across rough like wayne green did in his magazine in 73 magazine. i mean try it. what have you to lose. pretty good magazine but some didnt like wayne for his blunt responses. im the same way,. sorry. . my other motivator? Doug Demaw. I have every book he published thru the arrl. great designs, simple to build and efficient qrp rigs. know what he did? just build it. and build them he did and used alternative circuits. like using diode switching instead of relays in some of his projects. anyone here try that? just a suggestion. everyone should not be biased against someone just because ur miffed or upset etc because someone suggested something.it doesnt serve any purpose. by the way 100 watts was low power in the day. most of the big guns ran 500 or 1kw. i ran 100 or 50 when i could. when the new clubs came around with nifty ideas that were promoted in 73 magazine or ham radio horizons, they were fighting for our bands and wanted to cut down on the splatter, harmonics, and tvi interfence to the junk tv sets being sold.So most hams regarded the FCC requirements seriously and proudly by using external filtering when ever they could. thats what i was taught by my mentor. if in dought filter it out.and making sure ur antenna was proper measured and assembled and fed with the proper length of coax. remember not everyone is wrong and no one is completely right all the time. On Thursday, September 20, 2018 10:06 AM, ajparent1/KB1GMX <kb1gmx@...> wrote: David Todd, >>>you can change transistors rip coils out etc but if its originating from the mixer stage? or lack of shielding, moot point.all you need to do is add the 45 mhz filter in place of r27 and add external filtering for any given band.and run everything thru a filter to strip anything possible above 29.7 mhzi know some are trying to use this rig above 10 meters and turn the gain of the pots down. after all its intended for qrp operation.and most clubs recognize qrp as 5 watts now. technically 100 watts is low power compared to what we are all allowed to operate and what the old timers used to think...<<< First its 10W PEP for SSB.? Also there is no law only contest rules what QRP is.? The problem is the amp is so nonlinear? that at any power above 2W the IMD is poor and the spurs and harmonics are notable.? The latter harmonics do require attention regardless of power.? It was sold and designed as a 10W radio it would be nice to be withing 3db of that and there is no reason not to be better. As to the comments around 29.7 there are two low pass filters to strip anything above that, however below that a collection of stuff can and does escape.? Also the added 45mhz filter is a maybe fix as I've seen similar results from a 5db pad we need a larger number of samples to say it really helps. As to playing with the user interface and fancy displays.? If looks are important sure go color and touch screen.? If a clean signal and all are important your looking to make it look way better than it is as all the stuff on the front panel will not improve any of the analog RF out back.? ? Do I think the user interface work is cool, you bet I? do.? I'd rather apply that to something electronically?impressive. Allison |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI found the problem. It was related to a broken foil-line due to the insertion of two pins for an AGC/S-Meter connection. ? Thanks, ? David A Posthuma, WD8PUO 1 (616) 283-7703 ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of R. E. Klaus via Groups.Io ? Could also be a problem with the power supply to the uBITX. If you can, try a different power source before digging too deep. |

sort-of OT: quiet computer advice needed
I have a Lenovo T61 laptop that has worked fine for me for years that is now in need of replacement. ?It is a particularly RF quiet computer and I grounded its metal frame when I got my uBITX because the uBITX seems to particularly sensitive to computer generated RF noise, but now the hard drive and fan are making a racket, the keyboard has some unresponsive keys and the screen has a couple of lines. ?It's time for something new.
? I need a laptop with a dual core processor or better to watch streaming sports, but that is about the only need for speed that I have. Searches for info on RF quiet laptops have come up empty so I wonder if anyone has some experience that would help me make a good choice. ?Does anyone have something that has worked particularly well with their uBITX? Thanks in advance, Tom ?W1EAT |
