Sontag unequivocally confirmed that novels enlighten us. She went on to say, ¡°[Novels enlarge] your sense of human possibility, of what human nature is, of what happens in the world.¡± When we read a story, we experience, on an intellectual and emotional level, the successes and failures of the characters ¡ª and we learn empathy and understanding from their stories. Motivation Courage is more exhilarating than fear and in the long run it is easier.~ Eleanor Roosevelt Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian and former U.S. first lady (1884-1962) During her tenure as First Lady from 1933 to 1945, Eleanor Roosevelt redefined the nation¡¯s idea of how the president¡¯s wife should pass her time. She called weekly press conferences with women journalists, personally wrote a nationally syndicated newspaper column sharing her thoughts on the issues of the time, fought for civil rights, and sought to help refugees in the midst of World War II. In a time when wives, especially political wives, were meant to be quiet supporters of their husbands, she was a bold pioneer, leading by example to show all the good that women can do in the world. Inspiring Quotes for Friday May 16, 2025
Love True friendship withstands time, distance, and silence.~ Isabel Allende Isabel Allende Chilean American writer (1942-present) Chilean author Isabel Allende is one of the most widely read Spanish-language authors in the world, with a style that combines magical realism, personal experience, and historic events. She began her writing career translating Barbara Cartland novels into Spanish, while surreptitiously adding a few changes to make the female characters more intelligent (a practice that later got her fired). She was a TV personality for a while, wrote for a feminist magazine, worked for the United Nations, and fled Chile to Venezuela following dictator Augusto Pinochet¡¯s coup. She later moved to California, where she still lives and writes today. To say that she was well received in the U.S. would be an understatement: In 2014, Allende was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. Mary Live long and prosper
