Paul Siebel's songs were the soundtrack of my early 20's, and of Eric's and my courtship. Art Changes Student Exhibition – Opening Reception Alameda Education Foundation presents another incredible season of student artwork in Art Changes. The theme for this school year, Our Earth: Embracing All Communities, is based on the collage paintings of Salma Arastu as well as the poetry of Maw Shein Win. Salma Arastu’s paintings celebrate nature and the interdependence of all living creatures. Belonging and self-knowledge are important aspects of Maw Shein Win’s poetry. Ancestry and the natural world are both mysterious and clarifying in her work. Death Notice: Mel Vapour, East Bay Media Center, co-director First published by Berkeley Times on Thursday, March 13, 2025 Mel Vapour, longtime co-director of the East Bay Media Center and co-founder of the Berkeley Video & Film Festival, died on Monday, March 10 after a sudden illness. According to Paul Kealoha-Blake, his longtime artistic and business associate, Vapour’s final decline began last Friday with a sense of disease. On Sunday, he sought medical treatment and was transported to Alta Bates. On Monday, he died in hospice care. He was 78. Vapour was a multi-talented visual artist. Though almost every filmmaker in the Bay Area (dating back for decades) knew him as a master and maven of film/video production, his artistic career began in print and poster making dating back to his high school days in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was known for his experimental techniques and for his eye-popping designs. In the early 1970s, he won a fellowship to study printmaking in Germany at a studio closely associated with Albrecht Durer, one of his heroes. But when he showed up with long hair, which was fashionable at the time, and his prickly personality, the collaboration did not last. Vapour was a rebel at heart, always a champion for the underdog, and a nurturer of emerging talents – including this publication in its earliest days. According to Kealoha-Blake, a memorial service for his longtime associate is in the works. Look for the details in an upcoming edition of Berkeley Times. R. Seven wonderful choreographers will present new dances, revised pieces or works in progress, always stimulating, delightful and/or fascinating They are Avilee Goodwin, Carol Kueffer, Chingchi Yu, Claudine Naganuma with dNaga, Mary Reid. Ruth Botchan Dance Company and Sabah Ensemble. Ruth Botchan Dance Company will be performing our newest dance, Invention, which is about the materials of dance- time, space, sensation and dynamics. The dance is dedicated to my teachers Erick Hawkins and Luica Dlugozewski, who taught us to simply experience and delight in the movement, moment to moment. This year there will be two shows to choose from, actually the same show at two different times, at 1PM and 4PM. This will allow more folks to enjoy the performance since we always sell out. And as part of Bay Area Dance Week, we offer Dance-a-Rama for FREE! ?Support SB 456 and share with your network! Dear Lisa, Love murals? Want to save arts jobs in California? We have an urgent action: support SB 456 and share with your network! Add your organization or your name to a coalition letter in support of SB 456 (Ashby), a bill that fixes California regulations, allowing local governments to hire California muralists again. Current regulations require muralists to get a contractors license, which is expensive, onerous and not applicable to mural making. Let's fix the bill and save arts jobs! If you are a local elected official or city staff and/or you think your city would like to take a position on SB 456 (Ashby), please use the League of California Cities sample letter. As an active advocate, share the action with your network, encouraging members of the creative community to express solidarity with visual artists, even if it is not their primary art form. Background In 2023, the California State License Board began notifying cities that muralists fall within the definition of a "contractor" and therefore must carry a license for projects exceeding $500. To be in compliance, cities across the state have shuttered mural projects and artists are losing work. Authored by Senator Angelique Ashby, SB 456 would fix the regulation by providing a narrow exemption for muralists. SB 456 is sponsored by CA Arts Advocates and the League of California Cities, and is supported by the California Association of Public Arts Administrators. We limit each summer camp session to 12-15 students so that each student receives individual attention. Making art develops problem-solving skills, encourages creativity, and develops self-confidence. Our goal is to provide the materials, structure, and guidance to spark creativity in each child, allow them to explore and investigate their own ideas, and have lots of fun in the process. Our philosophy is to encourage students to explore and express themselves, emphasizing practice over product, without judgment, comparison, or criticism. Each camp day has plenty of structure and practice, and we have lots of fun in the process. I love to work with each student, one-on-one, to see what their unique interests are! We demonstrate a variety of methods and ways of making art to nurture artistic development. We also provide lessons on color theory, and famous artists in art history, and host special guests to spark the creative process. We wholeheartedly encourage individual exploration of personal themes and interests. And we value working together and sharing ideas. Collaboration, cooperation, and community are important!
