View this email in your browser This month, CJFE had the privilege of participating in the AVA Summit¡ªan inspiring gathering of advocates and professionals from around the world, all working to imagine a better future for people, animals, and the planet through transformative food practices. In addition to speaking on an interfaith panel--alongside experts representing Unitarian Universalism, Buddhism, and Islam--we were honored to host a Friday night Shabbat gathering. You can read more of my thoughts about the weekend on LinkedIn. Shabbat is a tradition rooted in rest, reflection, and the sacred act of imagining the world not simply as it is, but as it could and should be: more sustainable, peaceful, and just. Holding space for that vision alongside fellow changemakers was a powerful moment for our team to show up as Jewish leaders in a global movement, grounded in tradition and guided by hope. If you believe in the power of Jewish wisdom to transform our food systems and build a more just world, now is a great time to support our work. Help Build a More Just Food System Blessings, Melissa Celebrate With Us This Shavuot we encourage you to try one of our Shavu-Oat Nudge activities that highlight the benefits of incorporating plant-based ingredients (like *oat* milk) into your holiday foods. Livermore Rodeo Protest
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: pat Cuviello <pcuvie@...> Date: Sat, May 24, 2025 at 8:31 PM Subject: Livermore Rodeo Protest To: Please join Humanity Through Education in educating Rodeo patrons that animal abuse is not acceptable and should not be considered entertainment. The foundation of Rodeo ¡°entertainment¡± is causing animals fear and pain and making sport of their desire to escape. The only reason bulls and horses violently buck and kick is because of the pain caused by the bucking strap. In the case of the bulls the strap is cinched tightly across his penis. A ban on bucking straps would kill the rodeo as bucking horses and bulls are the main rodeo events. Other cruel events include calf-roping and ¡°steer wrestling.¡± Please stand with us against this cruelty. Chinese Vegetarian Duck (ËØѼ)
I¡¯ve never had real duck. I never wanted to, long before I stopped eating animals. Kosher duck wasn¡¯t common, thankfully. The one time I was offered it as a kid, I was a hard no, stating I see them in the park, so I¡¯m not eating them! I can¡¯t imagine this dish tastes anything like actual ducks. I love it in places like Nature in Oakland. Something about the crispy tofu sheets¡I like it when it has water chestnut bits in the savory mushroom filling. This recipe looks good but a lot of work. Top Bird Stories, May 2025: Taking Action for Birds.
Help defend critical protections for vulnerable species and forests A Study Shows Bird Population Declines, But Bright Spots Can Guide Conservation Action A new study from researchers with ABC, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and other partners published in Science shows that North American bird species are declining in the areas where they should be faring well. Analysis at the finest scale attempted for research of this kind shows that although 83 percent of species are declining where they¡¯re most abundant, nearly all are increasing in other areas. These areas where populations are increasing may help researchers identify what conservation strategies are working and apply them elsewhere. LEARN MORE Landmark Migratory Bird Law Weakened by Legal Opinion One of the oldest environmental laws in the United States, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act has protected millions ¡ª if not billions ¡ª of birds since it was signed in 1918. A recent legal opinion from the Department of the Interior has redefined how the MBTA is applied in industrial settings, undermining a key provision of the Act that has driven companies to adopt better practices to protect birds. The opinion rolls back that progress and puts birds at risk. READ MORE Defend Critical Protections for Vulnerable Species and Forests The ancient old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest are critical habitat for the Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murrelet, both listed under the Endangered Species Act. It¡¯s thanks to environmental policies protecting federally managed lands that these species have a fighting chance. Now, those habitats and the species they host are under threat. The Fix Our Forests Act being considered in the U.S. Congress would weaken protections for national forests, opening the door to large-scale logging. The problem is deeper in the Northwest, where stewardship plans are under revision and vulnerable to changes that could undermine restoration efforts.
