Subject: "A Turtle Rescue In Maui" | Short Video April 23, 2025 CNN

?
Congratulations Once Again to the Marine Institute Maui Ocean Center for their rescue and care of Hawaiian honu in trouble!? Please view this YouTube recently aired by CNN. The turtle rescue segment is at the 4 -to-9- minute mark.?
?

Note the vast majority of fishing line entanglements of turtles in Hawaii is the result of shoreline casting, where the turtle wraps itself in the active monofilament fishing line as the result of being attracted to the hook baited with shrimp, squid or chopped fish. Yes, honu primarily feed on marine vegetation, but they also have a huge fondness for proteinaceous sea foods when opportunities occur.??

Here is guidance on how to help a sea turtle, taken from the DLNR DAR State of Hawaii web site-

"Fishing Around Sea Turtles
Line entanglement around flippers, head or neck is the greatest threat to sea turtles so please remove as much line as possible!
  1. Call?the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline: 1-888-256-9840 for technical guidance while you remove the line.
  2. Reel in?turtle with care. Do the best you can to land the animal carefully. DO NOT drag a turtle up a cliff.
  3. Hold the turtle?by its shell and/or flippers.
  4. Cut line?close to hook, as short as possible.
  5. Remove the hook?only if it can be done without injury to you or the turtle. If the hook¡¯s barb is exposed, smash it down to easily extract the hook and shorten the handling time of the turtle. DO NOT remove the hook if swallowed. If using a barbless hook, the hook should easily come out.
  6. Remove any line?from flippers, head and neck. Try to remove any remaining line from the reef.
  7. Release?turtle with no line attached.
  8. Dispose of the line in a responsible manner."

The leading cause of injury to Hawaiian green sea turtles was discovered to be entanglement from fishing gear from the latest Hawaii Pacific University research.
