King

#A536587 King is 12 years old and this first picture you see his him sitting at his mom's feet as she turns him into the shelter and rids herself of responsibility for him.

The shelter reached out to us for a safe exit, as they had taken him to an off-site vet for a work up due to his immobility. The vet said he was aggressive, but staff advocated for him by saying he had been fine at the shelter.

Teresa Petros had?the honor of doing King's freedom ride down to FFF where we saw his funny walk that the shelter witnessed. Although x-rays showed severe arthritis, he moreso has neurologic deficits. Sometimes he will walk fine, and other times he will completely drag his back end. We did bloodwork which showed a mildly elevated ALP, and we started him on some pain medication. King also got his first acupuncture treatment today with Dr. Lipman.

King's spirit is strong and his teeth make him look much younger than 12! He loves being part of everything, and he will drag himself around to make that happen and paw at you for pets!

Today, King got fitted for a wheelchair so he can cruise! King loves dogs and doesn't have a mean bone in his body it seems.

We love special dogs like King, and we hope that you do too! Please come by and meet him at Open House this weekend, Saturday & Sunday from 10am-1pm, and consider making him part of your family. You could be those cool people with the wheelie dog on walks around the neighborhood!

Sydney

15 year old Sydney was brought into OC shelter as a stray and not claimed. We thought she had a terrible deformity and was maybe missing an eye. Kay Bradley transported her down to FFF where we discovered?that she had?a mass hanging over a perfectly good eye!

Sydney got all dolled up with our grooming partner at The Buried Bone, and they renewed pep in her step. Sydney had?surgery scheduled for last Monday where they removed the mass, spayed her, and did?dental surgery. The good news is that the mass was benign and fully excised. It came back as a trichoblastoma and surgery should be curative. The great news is now Sydney can also see out of that eye!

Sydney got chosen for a family of her very own shortly after and is loved dearly!?

Copper

You are looking at one of the luckiest little buggers we know this week!
Copper #184440 was an owner surrender to Ramona Humane Society last week. Copper's mom went into hospice care and the husband could no longer care for Copper as he would also be moving into a care facility. They requested to have Copper put to sleep but the shelter felt that Copper deserved a chance.

Volunteer, Lina Leslie, networked Copper to rescues and he caught our eye! Deb Barnes had the honor or doing his freedom ride to FFF!? Copper's big smile and adoring eyes melted our hearts immediately! On Wednesday he went to College Animal Hospital for diagnostics where we did a senior panel and x-rays. Dr. Hoard noticed that his spleen looked big and weird, so she did a fast scan too! There was no free fluid, but there was certainly a mass, and we know we need to act fast on splenic masses. We were just feeling lucky that we do chest and abdominal x-rays on every Frosted Face upon intake because Dr. Hoard caught this!

We usually send fosters the full record the following Thursday once bloodwork is back, so we hadn't even reported yet what the x-rays results were to Copper's family as we got caught up in the chaos that is FFF on a Wednesday.

Later that Wednesday evening, Copper's fosters emailed the Family Support Specialists and said that Copper was exceptionally lethargic and not eating. We had them check his gums: pink. We had them take his temperature: 100.8.
...Did his mass start to bleed on same day we discovered it? That would be too coincidental, but we didn't know his PCV yet because labs weren't back. Even though his color and temperature were okay, and he maybe just had a big day at the vet, we sent them to Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego for a quick fast scan and PCV check. I kid you not- Copper's splenic mass had ruptured and they took him to surgery. He made it, and he is doing well!!

Cheers to shelters giving dogs a chance, networkers for getting shelter dog seen, fosters who can give the dogs specialized attention, the can-do vets who jump into action, and you, the donors, who make spur of the moment procedures affordable!

Meet Copper, who is alive today because of a bunch of people who gave a part of themselves, from time, space, money, and skills, to hope - he is okay and ready for family! He got through all of this just to be with you!
to be Copper's final family!

Rolo

We had a special delivery waiting for us at?San Diego International Airport from Kauai Humane Society last Tuesday!

Meet Rolo! Rolo is an estimated 8 years old and already in the early stages of renal failure. It was described to us that there isn¡¯t a prevalent ¡°adoption culture¡± on the islands, and of course, fewer options for homes, so the shelters make an extra effort to get dogs into the continental US!
We are so excited to have the partnership with Kauai Humane Society and we think they are too! They even already signed up to be Rolo¡¯s Fan!

Rolo was already assessed by their veterinarian, so tomorrow he is heading to College Animal Hospital to get established and a develop a treatment plan.

Rolo previously lived in a foster home with two other male dogs and it was described that they ¡°absolutely loved each other.¡± We hope he loves all of his new Frosted Friends!

to meet Rolo!

When they had the branch restaurant ( Eternal, says, temporarily?closed) and before that at the san Pablo location, which is? quite small, their brunch and other food was really good.
I like their basic donuts, which?come in cool flavors, but are not like traditional donuts. However, if you have a chance?( used to be weekend only), they make fritters, really rich with fruit centers, which are really filling but great!!!

Moderated As you see in the pic, I highly recommend Vegan India!

Had to try it when I discovered a vegan place in Albany. It seems to only be delivery via Grub Hub and Door Dash. And, they followed my directions to make it totally mild, which I really appreciate.? This is so much food, it¡¯ll be 3-4 meals for me over the next few days, so pretty economical for not being home made.

Moderated One Year Later -- WildCare Pandemic Update

?

Dear Friends,

Today marks exactly one year since the pandemic upended our operations.

This emergency forced us to adapt with resilience, creativity, and team spirit to continue providing the highest standard of care for the thousands of animals we receive in our Wildlife Hospital each year, and to connect thousands of children with nature.

I¡¯m writing to share all that you have made possible over the past 12 months, and to let you know how we are moving forward as we emerge from this crisis.

Your unfailing commitment to our mission and ongoing support has helped WildCare look ahead, more vital than ever.

The Wildlife Hospital adapts to a new reality

In 2020, WildCare¡¯s Wildlife Hospital, designated an essential service during the pandemic, treated nearly 3,500 wild patients ¡ª a 10% increase over the prior year.

This increase in patient intake happened, even as our volunteer roster was eliminated last March due to shelter in place restrictions. By summer, we could bring back only few of our onsite volunteers due to strict COVID-19 protocols.

When new restrictions were imposed this winter, we implemented a "pod" system ¡ª small, alternating groups of workers ¡ª to ensure we could continue our work and keep volunteers and staff safe.

We updated our Wildlife Hospital patient intake procedures with a new gated entry to give the public a safe way to bring us rescued animals.

Meanwhile, demand for our services continued to grow. Our Living with Wildlife Hotline 415-456-7283 saw an astonishing 16% increase in calls from across the Bay Area, the state and the country. In autumn of 2020, we admitted over 160 orphaned baby squirrels to WildCare, a nearly 50% increase over the previous year. We also admitted evacuated animals from a Napa wildlife hospital due to September¡¯s Glass Fire.

And from the beginning of December to date, 166 Pine Siskins, small migratory finches, infected with the deadly Salmonella bacteria have been brought in for care. WildCare launched a comprehensive advocacy campaign to alert people to the deadly outbreak of salmonellosis, and inform them of the need to remove and sanitize bird feeders immediately to protect songbirds.

Why did we see this increase in the need for our programs? With so many people working from home, more people have noticed the impacts of human activity on our wild neighbors. They¡¯ve brought in sick and injured songbirds, orphaned skunks, emaciated raptors, and many other wildlife patients, knowing these animals will receive quality care in a safe, secure environment.

We couldn¡¯t have done it without our volunteers

Despite being forced to cancel our onsite volunteer and internship programs for much of the year, our team of offsite volunteers actually grew!

Over 200 caring members of the WildCare community stepped up to foster record numbers of orphaned wild babies in the summer and fall. These deeply committed volunteers participated in virtual Zoom checkups for our most vulnerable patients, and took online trainings as needed.

In the winter season, once it was safer to do so, we invited a limited number of highly skilled volunteers back into the Wildlife Hospital, restructuring our on-site roles to give them greater responsibilities while maintaining social distancing guidelines.

A new team of intake volunteers also allows our Living with Wildlife Hotline staff additional flexibility and the ability to focus on the most critical calls and inquiries from the public.

Virtual Nature Education: teaching by Zoom

Our Education Director and her Education team met this historic moment by pivoting successfully to 100% remote learning.

Developed with feedback from over 600 classroom teachers and parents, our popular live Nature Van and Nature Hikes programs were revamped into four engaging new 45-minute distance-learning presentations for K-6th graders featuring our Wildlife Ambassadors.

We also offered new virtual hikes through three different Marin habitats, from a Mill Valley redwood forest to the Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve's windswept grasslands.

Despite 12 weeks of school closures in the spring, we were still able to bounce back in the summer and fall with a very popular virtual wildlife summer camp, offered for free to nearly 700 children.

Our four new virtual presentations reached over 7,000 students in 2020 and the beginning of 2021. More than 40% of those students received a full or partial scholarship.

Our program's classroom teachers (and kids!) were delighted with this fun and engaging new interactive presentation. One teacher told us:

"I liked that [the program] was more than just talking "at" the students; there were polls, question time, videos, showing of pictures, so much in a short time that was just packed with information."
¡ª Renea, 5th grade teacher, Prestwood Elementary, Sonoma

Advocating for wildlife

Since the new year began, we¡¯ve successfully sounded the alarm about the lethal Salmonella outbreak affecting our songbirds.

Our new is spreading the word about the dangers to wildlife of tree trimming during nesting season, with the help of nationally-acclaimed graphic artist Michael Schwab.

We¡¯re reaching out to Bay Area residents and businesses with a message of respect for nesting birds and mammals, asking that the public refrain from pruning and trimming trees and shrubs from spring through fall, a critical time for our local wildlife. with WildCare team members Melanie Piazza and Alison Hermance, along with San Rafael arborist Jim Cairnes, discussing ways to avoid harm to nesting birds and their babies.

And the award goes to¡

The community is also recognizing the excellent work WildCare has done and continues to do during this extraordinary time: We recently received an a group of community-minded businesses and organizations headed by the Marin Independent Journal. We were honored to be one of only 12 Marin nonprofits to receive this award.

Moving forward...

As we emerge from the pandemic with a renewed sense of optimism and hope, we are delighted to share some new developments:

We¡¯ve expanded our to four new interns this spring and another four this summer, and continued with a small on-site volunteer program and a sustainable and skilled staffing structure as we once again enter wildlife baby season.

Our interns will work alongside our senior medical team and staff veterinarian to broaden and deepen their knowledge of wildlife rehabilitation techniques.

Our upcoming promises a week of nature exploration and close-up animal encounters, including behind-the-scenes videos from our Wildlife Hospital, to see how Medical Staff cares for our most memorable baby animal patients.

Our 2021 Summer Education Programs are starting to take shape as a blend of at-home activities and on-the-trail learning in small, safe groups.

And we are continuing to work towards building WildCare a new home that will provide the best possible care for local wildlife. We will have more news to share on this front in the coming months.

We couldn¡¯t have made it through this very difficult time without the generosity of friends like you, who have given your support and your ongoing commitment to our mission of helping us all live well with wildlife.

Thank you!

With gratitude and optimism for the work ahead,

Ellyn Weisel

Moderated Plz sign: Californians Have the Right to Know About Toxic Pesticides

We need new policies for our protection.
??? ??? ???

Californians deserve to know about hazardous agricultural pesticides used near their homes and workplaces. But some local officials are fighting efforts to shine a light on when and where toxic chemicals are sprayed.

This is disastrous for farmworkers and frontline communities with chronic pesticide exposure. They have among the highest rates of cancer, neurodevelopment disorders and respiratory illnesses in the country ¡ª all major risk factors for COVID-19.

Hazardous pesticides are also deadly to some of California's most imperiled wildlife, like?salmon and red-legged frogs.

Moderated Pt Reyes: We need more from PRNS Superintendent Craig Kenkel

Subject: We need more from PRNS Superintendent Craig Kenkel
To: <judithrachelleg@...>

Dear Friends,

Thursday night, the Point Reyes National Seashore (PRNS) Association hosted new Park?Superintendent, Craig Kenkel, at?an online event to introduce him?to the community.?I was hoping?that it would be a chance for Park supporters?to ask questions and make comments about how we could improve the situation in Point Reyes. But as many of us?quickly realized, the local PRNS Association?had other ideas.

Instead of using the Superintendent¡¯s?valuable time to have a heathy exchange of ideas, staff spent the first half-hour asking?Superintendent Kenkel about?his favorite food, favorite song, favorite color and other trivialities. Despite this excess of small talk, we did eventually learn?a few items of importance, listed below.?

Key Take Aways Include:

1. The?California Coastal Commission (CCC)?meeting to review National Park Service (NPS) plans for Point Reyes?will be Thursday, April 22 ¡ª you read that right, Earth Day ¡ª so please mark?your calendars to attend that CCC meeting online

2.?Superintendent Kenkel predicted?that NPS would win CCC approval for?their land management plan?and, once they?do, he expects?NPS to?finalize the legal document?featuring 20-year lease agreements with local ranchers?in ¡°early July¡±

Supporters of native wildlife and ecosystems have already submitted?tens of thousands of letters?to NPS and the Coastal Commission, and we¡¯re not stopping here.?Mr. Kenkel acknowledged that he is not a Tule Elk expert and therefore he¡¯s been relying on the advice of others for specifics, at least until he learns more. This is where we can help him.

When Mr. Kenkel spoke about?the General Management Plan Amendment (GMPA) Thursday night,?he had a slip of the tongue and said?he was supportive of Alternative F ¡ª removing?ranching from PRNS ¡ª?but he quickly changed that to?Alternative B, the proposed path?to expand?ranching leases for 20 years and add new?farming in the national park. This is not why we have national parks.?

I was briefly encouraged by his accidental support of Alternative F, or as my?friend Matthew?wrote in the online comments of Mr. Kenkel,?¡°it¡¯s where your heart is.¡±?Yet I know we have to keep up the pressure on?NPS staff and CCC Commissioners if we¡¯re going to successfully compete against the pressure from cattle ranchers. We want these?decision makers to?follow their?hearts and restore and rewild Point Reyes.?I don¡¯t know if Superintendent?Kenkel is?willing to hear us out on our concerns, but I want to give him the opportunity to do so.?

Mr.?Kenkel describes himself as a ¡°consensus builder.¡± In that spirit, I?invite?him to?sit down with For Elk and other local environmental and conservation leaders?to discuss how we can protect?the Tule Elk and restore the?native ecosystem in PRNS.?

The Superintendent is new here, as is the Biden Administration in Washington, DC. This is not the time to rubber stamp the work product of the Trump years. So I¡¯ve asked Superintendent Kenkel to meet with us, hear us out, take note of the consensus that exists among thousands of Park lovers, and then proceed from there?with his eyes open.?

I will let you know how it goes.?

Thank you,
Diana, Founder of For Elk

Moderated sustainability office contacts

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have contact with a sustainability office in the bay area? MFA is looking for some contacts. please see the message below. Please let me know ASAP if you know anyone.
Thanks!
Lisa

Greetings from MFA's research team! Thank you so much for being open to sourcing participants for our survey. The target audience for this survey is quite narrow - staff members at sustainability offices. We are trying to better understand the attitudes and interests of those drafting?and enacting sustainability plans in relation to food policy initiatives. If you have anyone in your circle working in this capacity, I would like to connect you to Kayla Redd, who is our research assistant on this joint project with Colorado State. She would need to send the link so that we can keep track of who has been asked to participate.
