The foundation of Rodeo ¡°entertainment¡± is causing animals fear and pain and making sport of their desire to escape. The only reason ? and violently buck and kick is because of the pain caused by the bucking strap. A ban on bucking straps would kill the rodeo as bucking horses and bulls are the main rodeo events.

Other cruel events include and ¡°steer wrestling.¡± Please stand with us against this cruelty.

GOOD NEWS- The absurd and cruel ¡°Wild Cow Milking¡± event will not be held at this rodeo anymore as it was banned by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

Moderated Top Bird Stories, May 2025: Taking Action for Birds.

Help defend critical protections for vulnerable species and forests

A new study from researchers with ABC, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and other partners published in Science shows that North American bird species are declining in the areas where they should be faring well.

?

Analysis at the finest scale attempted for research of this kind shows that although 83 percent of species are declining where they¡¯re most abundant, nearly all are increasing in other areas. These areas where populations are increasing may help researchers identify what conservation strategies are working and apply them elsewhere.

?

One of the oldest environmental laws in the United States, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act has protected millions ¡ª if not billions ¡ª of birds since it was signed in 1918. A recent legal opinion from the Department of the Interior has redefined how the MBTA is applied in industrial settings, undermining a key provision of the Act that has driven companies to adopt better practices to protect birds. The opinion rolls back that progress and puts birds at risk.

?

The ancient old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest are critical habitat for the Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murrelet, both listed under the Endangered Species Act. It¡¯s thanks to environmental policies protecting federally managed lands that these species have a fighting chance. Now, those habitats and the species they host are under threat.

?

The Fix Our Forests Act being considered in the U.S. Congress would weaken protections for national forests, opening the door to large-scale logging. The problem is deeper in the Northwest, where stewardship plans are under revision and vulnerable to changes that could undermine restoration efforts.

?

Urgent action is needed to defend the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and national forests across the U.S. Birds need your voice: Contact your representatives today.

When threats to birds get bigger, we go bold. Catch our recent webinar to hear from ABC¡¯s experts who are taking bold action and finding innovative solutions to meet the challenges birds are facing head on. From the halls of Congress to cacao farms in Honduras, and everywhere in between, ABC is delivering for birds.

?

Migration is not for the faint of heart! Birds encounter a gauntlet of threats as they travel, and though millions of birds set out for their breeding grounds each year, many won¡¯t make it. Follow the journey of one little Cerulean Warbler as he dodges deforested habitats, outmaneuvers outdoor cats, and overcomes the odds.

?

Window collisions are a threat to birds (both resident and migratory) in any season, but migration brings the toll of these needless deaths into sharp focus. While any bird can fall victim to a collision with reflective glass, some species are more susceptible than others. Meet the most frequent colliders and find tips to make your windows safer for birds.

?

Many birders wait with bated breath for the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and with it, the return of warblers heading toward their breeding grounds. Though habitat loss, window collisions, and other threats put warblers at risk, ABC and our partners are working to make the journey safer for these much- loved migratory birds.

?

Would a warbler by any other name still sing as sweetly? The answer is: yes! Many of North America¡¯s 53 warbler species are conveniently named and brightly colored. But some break the mold, like the stream-stepping, tail-pumping Louisiana Waterthrush and the Ovenbird, lover of leaf litter and forest floors. Learn more about the wide array of warblers, the role they play in our ecosystems, and what we can do to conserve these little spring songsters.?

Moderated Shark Stewards: Defend the Endangered Species Act

David McGuire started this organization out of Earth Island in Berkeley.

Endangered Species Act?at Risk

The Endangered Species Act (ESA)?is currently at risk under a new proposal by?the Trump Administration.??submitted by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) would repeal the current definition of ¡°harm¡± currently prohibited under the ESA.?

Currently?under the ESA, agencies interpret harm to include damage to species¡¯ habitat. But the administration is trying to change language in the rule to make it easier for developers and industry to build or extract in areas where listed endangered species live. This would loosen restrictions on industrial activities like coastal development and oil exploration that might damage an endangered animal¡¯s habitat, even if the animal itself is not directly harmed.?

Habitat, like coral reefs, estuaries, and kelp forests, are where animals live to feed, breed and to survive. Developing or polluting habitat can kill?prey populations or destroy refuge, adding to the threat of?protected species.?In many cases, species like green sea turtles require specific beaches to nest. Great hammerhead sharks use fragile estuaries and shallow bays to gestate and pup. Loss of important habitat means no baby turtles or baby sharks, increasing the risk of extinction.

Endangered sea turtles require undisturbed beaches to nest. Green sea turtle, Kona Hawai'i. Image ?DavidMcGuire,SharkStewards

On top of other threats to the marine environment, including?stripping commercial fisheries protection in?, the change in the ESA?could reverse critical environmental safeguards and over 50 years of important species protection. Redefining harm to leave out habitat destruction could be the death knell for imperiled species across the United States and beyond, including great hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles and short tailed albatross.

Please join me by writing to congress to maintain, not weaken environmental and species protection.?

Subject: "A Turtle Rescue In Maui" | Short Video April 23, 2025 CNN

?
Congratulations Once Again to the Marine Institute Maui Ocean Center for their rescue and care of Hawaiian honu in trouble!? Please view this YouTube recently aired by CNN. The turtle rescue segment is at the 4 -to-9- minute mark.?
?

Note the vast majority of fishing line entanglements of turtles in Hawaii is the result of shoreline casting, where the turtle wraps itself in the active monofilament fishing line as the result of being attracted to the hook baited with shrimp, squid or chopped fish. Yes, honu primarily feed on marine vegetation, but they also have a huge fondness for proteinaceous sea foods when opportunities occur.??

Here is guidance on how to help a sea turtle, taken from the DLNR DAR State of Hawaii web site-

"Fishing Around Sea Turtles
Line entanglement around flippers, head or neck is the greatest threat to sea turtles so please remove as much line as possible!
  1. Call?the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline: 1-888-256-9840 for technical guidance while you remove the line.
  2. Reel in?turtle with care. Do the best you can to land the animal carefully. DO NOT drag a turtle up a cliff.
  3. Hold the turtle?by its shell and/or flippers.
  4. Cut line?close to hook, as short as possible.
  5. Remove the hook?only if it can be done without injury to you or the turtle. If the hook¡¯s barb is exposed, smash it down to easily extract the hook and shorten the handling time of the turtle. DO NOT remove the hook if swallowed. If using a barbless hook, the hook should easily come out.
  6. Remove any line?from flippers, head and neck. Try to remove any remaining line from the reef.
  7. Release?turtle with no line attached.
  8. Dispose of the line in a responsible manner."
  9. ------------------------------------------------
And
The leading cause of injury to Hawaiian green sea turtles was discovered to be entanglement from fishing gear from the latest Hawaii Pacific University research.
