I was just about to ask, when...
I am still struggling to process the fact that Lynn is no longer with us.? I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Lynn (and Paul) several times when we worked bike ride events near Orlando over quite a few years.? I was both astonished and honored that he remembered me each time we saw each other.? I was particularly surprised when he APRS messaged me out of the blue one time when he must have realized I was actively mobile.? Lynn was remarkable.? He was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.? His passing profoundly saddened me.? We all miss him.
?
In early December, I was having a small issue with the software.? I was literally getting ready to put a message on here with the hope that Lynn would respond with words of wisdom as he always did, when word of his untimely passing struck.? I've been so dismayed that I haven't gotten around to putting that message on here until now to see if one of the other clever folks here might have an answer.
?
I run the software on several computers - they're all a little different since they serve different purposes.? One of my instances of the software always starts with the "View" set to "None" and the map tile selection set to one other than the "Original" one.? At some point, I must have selected those options (although I don't know why I'd select "None" for the "View"), but they have somehow become somewhat permanent.? I have to change them at every start.? I suspect that information is stored in the XML file somewhere, but I can't find where that might be.? I know just enough about the XML file to be dangerous, and I've searched for every version of character strings I could think of that might be used.
?
Long ago, I thought I was told that if you ended the program in a less-than-full window, the XML file would store all the current parameters so that it would open again as you left it when you closed it.? I've tried that, but it doesn't seem to work, so maybe I misunderstood that situation.
?
So, does anyone happen to know where or how those two parameters (selections for "View" and "Screen/Tile set") are stored so I can change them?? I have no problem editing the XML file as long as I know what I'm looking for (and I do make a copy of the current working file before I start tinkering...).
?
Thanks.

Gil, As long as the window isn't maximized, you are correct that it is supposed to save the current settings upon exit. Do you have it "docked" in a corner or half screen on close? This may interupt the save as well. Do you have the xml file open on close? That will cause issues. Is it installed in a read only folder? Or has that folder permissions changed? Just trying some low hanging fruit, I can't currently get at my xml files to do any creative searching for those settings. Might not help but since you run several instances, you can zip up the entire folder and drop it on another machine (then just change the callsign if necessary etc and all the other settings will be there)
?
I back my installation up by copying the folder, it makes moving PC painless.
?
Carl.? G0TQM. (Grateful to Lynn for all the individial help received over the years) |
I think I fixed it.? I was running this on a Surface Go that I use in my vehicle.? I had it installed on a removable micro SD card rather than take up space on the internal SSD with the map tiles.? I did check that the XML file date and time changed whenever I closed the program, so apparently, it did have write privileges there.
?
I copied and pasted the entire folder (including the map tile folders) to the root of the C: drive.? I changed the only reference to E: drive (for the map tile folders) to the new location on C: drive.? Those were the only specific file location references in the XML file.? Somehow, that fixed the issue with the "View" being locked into "None."? After changing the View" selection to "All" and closing the program, it came back with "All" selected by default.? I'm not sure why that seems to have fixed it, but I'll take it.? One down, one to go.
?
The map selection still came up with the wrong map.? The arrangement in the XML file didn't suggest apparent reasons for that.? What I found by chance that may have fixed it was that under the "Configure" menu, whatever map tile set you selected shows up when the program starts.? I had been working with the "wrong" one recently and it had remained checked.? I guess that makes sense, but I had wrongly assumed that the selection was just for managing the tile sets.? Apparently, it sets the default tile set for when the program starts.? Who knew?? Not me.? Problems solved.
?
This probably all makes sense in hindsight, and operator errors caused the issues.? Thanks to those who replied.? Your comments got me thinking.
