Favorite Weather Station
Looking to get into the weather reporting world and am looking for something that will tie to APRSIS32, perhaps another online reporting format to benefit my local (Rural) area by allowing information to go to the NWS, as well as hopefully have a display that I can put somewhere else in the house that's not near my ham shack for a local display.?
Figured I'd ask what everyone's favorite weather stations were for a place to start.? KC2ANT-2 is currently set up as a Fill in W1-1 digi, and an iGate and I'm considering adding weather to this instance, or perhaps just setting up a second IS only instance for the weather station, haven't made that decision yet.? Any guidance, favorite hardware recommendations, or reference material would be greatly appreciated. 73 Adam KC2ANT |
Adam, I have the Weather Flow, tempest Station.? it is battery and solar power and it is great.? No moving parts.? You will need the mounting bracket if you do not have a pole.?? This will need the Weather Display software to tie in the text file since this station is wifi.? After the 30 day trial, the user will need to purchase the software (lifetime purchase, $58).? I will be purchasing it soon and re-link it to aprs.? The software has a lot of options. Keith Boyer?N4TRN Orange County ARES Asst. Emerg. Coord. Davis Vantage Pro, do not bother with the cheaper VUE model, they are not fit for purpose! 73 Steve,? 开云体育Hi Adam,Our local club, W5NEM has an APRS system setup running a Peet Bros. 2100 with the Weather Display attached. The system started out many years ago using UI View but after being offline for sometime due to a move it was setup back up using APRSISCE. This system has been on and off the air for nearly 20 years with moves etc. It was originally a 2000 that was upgraded to a 2100 thru the Peet upgrade program. Once setup it has always been stable and performed well. You can get a CWOP account and follow the charting to make adjustments to the sensors along the way for better results with the readings from any weather station. The Peet Bros. systems are not cheap, but as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. We have always found their technical support to be outstanding when we needed them. Hope this helps, I’m sure others will be able to share experience with other systems.? 73 Jeff kb5nmb? On Mar 31, 2024, at 12:52?PM, Adam - KC2ANT <kc2ant@...> wrote:

开云体育Sorry I intended to give you the URL in the original reply and forgot to. The Weather Display is a framed unit that shows all the weather data at a glance. Here is the URL:?Jeff kb5nmb? On Mar 31, 2024, at 12:52?PM, Adam - KC2ANT <kc2ant@...> wrote:

开云体育I have used many different weather station in my time and the Davis is by far the best on the market. I have used Pro2 and the Vantage Vue and for just home use the Vue will work for you. I used a vue and Pro ISS in Florida and they both preformed great. As long as you do yearly maintenance on the ISS, it will last you for many years. Look around for the best price. 开云体育I use an Ambient Weather WS-2000. It does Ambient Network, Weather Underground and CWOP through an external routine.?Davis is better but much more expensive. ?The only thing I don’t like is the anemometer can’t be remoted to higher elevation but 30’ wouldn’t really make much difference in my location. I would need to get about 80-100ft to be above tree tops but that
is out of spec for NWS. ?I believe the spec is 10’ for atmospheric and 30’ for wind.?
But overall very happy with the Ambient for the price.?

I also use a WeatherFlow Tempest (https://tempestwx.com/station/105677/grid).? Installation is easy.?? I use weewx (https://weewx.com/) to do my APRS-IS reporting (https://aprs.fi/KJ4ERJ-WX) with their WeatherFlowUDP module.? weewx also gives me local graphs and such without using the cloud as it directly captures the UDP weather packets on my LAN (http://ldeffenb.dnsalias.net/weewx/).?? There's also a plug-in for Home Assistant that pulls the same UDP data into HA for display and use by automations. Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ - Author of APRSISCE for Windows Mobile and Win32 |
Thank you everyone?for the information. I'll be diving in and exploring over the next month or so and may reach out to individuals if I need further assistance. 73 Adam KC2ANT On Sun, Mar 31, 2024 at 4:21?PM Lynn Deffenbaugh <kj4erj@...> wrote:

开云体育Yes tempest are very nice units and their customer support is great. I had a battery issue develop with my unit and they sent me a brand new one. My original one was over 2 years old. Sitting up with weewx is my next project. ...DOUG KD4MOJ ?

开云体育I have a Davis Vantage Vue connected to my PC running Cumulus. Cumulus provides the wxnow.txt file to generate an object. The display stays in the ham shack and also has a data logger that has a usb serial connection. That's what Cumulus talks
to. You have to have the display on the power supply when connected to the computer as the data logger will eat the batteries in a short time. I also have a second display for the rest of the house with no logger. I don't think there's any limit to the number
of displays when they are all listening to the same station.?
I have a cwop ID and was sending the weather data to them via direct connection but noticed some time discrepancies between it and what was going over aprs. I have since turned the direct connection off and only supply via IS or RF. Then there
is no problems being marked. Cumulus will also let you upload to a bunch of different sites too. I send to Windy, Weatherunderground, and I think a couple others.?
Just search for KB3KBR-WX and you'll see it.?

The Tempest sounds like a winner to me. I appreciate the info provided in this discussion. There's a gentleman north of my home QTH that has at Tempest and was asking me about how to get data from it in order to send out a weather beacon (via connected packet in his case). After reading this I'm tempted to order one myself. 73, Lee K5DAT ? |
