Re: Object
Carl, The APRS packet definitions were designed to shoehorn into an existing?system. They took advantage of what existed and made it do something new. It wasn't a new system designed from the ground up, so there are some "unique" solutions. The APRS object definitions are no exception. Just about every APRS packet is human readable to an extent... are they plain English with extremely detailed explanations of each component? Nope, you usually need to have a rudimentary idea of the structure. The APRS client software does that interpretation to pretty pictures and decoded information. But with a little knowledge, one can decipher most of the information manually. Knowing that?+900 means?+9MHz is one of those things you need to know. Most people don't even look at the raw packets, we spend a lot of time explaining packet contents to users in these forums. As for your object timing. You mention you use timing between 25-45 minutes. I'm assuming that this is your pseudo-random timing to space out the packets. This is the usual way that a human will attempt to randomize packets like these. In fact, you are not randomizing, and will end up with overlapping packets based on the math. A better solution is to use the same timing, but use an offset to keep them apart. It's easy to visualize that sending one packet at a 5 minute interval, and a second at a 10 minute interval, that these will overlap where multiples of 5 and 10 occur, which is every 5 minutes. Same thing happens with 26 and 32 minutes, except the overlap is based on when multiples of 26 and 32 occur. If you do multiple objects you get multiple?overlaps, with the occasional big cluster. If you send all the packets at a 39 minute interval, but start them 4 minutes apart, they will never overlap. They will always stay 4 minutes apart. Some systems will support this spacing, others may not, so you are stuck. Here's another thing to think about. Who is asking for the information you are providing? The basic concept of APRS is to send information periodically to keep the remote user's display populated. This works when there isn't a lot of information to convey. However as APRS is a 1200 baud channel, and has limited capacity, when lots of people send lots of information, collisions can wipe out data, making that data being sent useless. One thing that was designed was a QRU server. This device is configured with a bunch of information, like objects for repeaters, gas stations, hospitals, etc that an end user can query when the information is needed. This however requires that the person needing the information has the ability and knowledge to know to ask the question. All of the above isn't an admonition, or me trying to tell you that you are doing things wrong. Rather it is just a bit of information that *may* give a nudge towards looking at what you (and anyone else reading) are doing, and maybe think about doing that task a slightly different way. I know I can get stuck looking at a solution to a problem I am facing, and can't see any other perspective. But along comes someone else who asks "Why", and through trying to defend my position, or with the right outside prompt, a new and maybe better solution presents itself. So much potential in APRS I have never heard of :( Thing is, +900 doesn't shout +9MHz to me and I can't imagine casual APRS browsers (most who will be using aprs.fi let's face it) will either?? So I'm torn, rather. Carl |

Genius,? Thanks,
Looking at the guidance I'm a bit surpised it thinks repeater beacons should be every 10mins.? I'm scattering mine 25-45 mins (and all slightly different) mind you only a handful are going to RF. Thanks again. Carl |

Re: I was just about to ask, when...
I think I fixed it.? I was running this on a Surface Go that I use in my vehicle.? I had it installed on a removable micro SD card rather than take up space on the internal SSD with the map tiles.? I did check that the XML file date and time changed whenever I closed the program, so apparently, it did have write privileges there.
?
I copied and pasted the entire folder (including the map tile folders) to the root of the C: drive.? I changed the only reference to E: drive (for the map tile folders) to the new location on C: drive.? Those were the only specific file location references in the XML file.? Somehow, that fixed the issue with the "View" being locked into "None."? After changing the View" selection to "All" and closing the program, it came back with "All" selected by default.? I'm not sure why that seems to have fixed it, but I'll take it.? One down, one to go.
?
The map selection still came up with the wrong map.? The arrangement in the XML file didn't suggest apparent reasons for that.? What I found by chance that may have fixed it was that under the "Configure" menu, whatever map tile set you selected shows up when the program starts.? I had been working with the "wrong" one recently and it had remained checked.? I guess that makes sense, but I had wrongly assumed that the selection was just for managing the tile sets.? Apparently, it sets the default tile set for when the program starts.? Who knew?? Not me.? Problems solved.
?
This probably all makes sense in hindsight, and operator errors caused the issues.? Thanks to those who replied.? Your comments got me thinking.

Might not help but since you run several instances, you can zip up the entire folder and drop it on another machine (then just change the callsign if necessary etc and all the other settings will be there)
?
I back my installation up by copying the folder, it makes moving PC painless.

Re: Digipeating with Kenwood TM D710
I use the D710 TNC on the FalconSat3 9600 bird. When using the Kenwood 710, you need to plug the cable into the head of the radio not the body to use the TNC in KISS mode, at least on FS3, that's what I had to do in order to work the BBS on the bird. Those were fun days.? The bird was in high orbit, so it had a good footprint. 73 DE AI4LL On Mon, Jan 13, 2025 at 3:12?PM Randy Love via <rlove31=[email protected]> wrote:

I've been trying my best to keep APRS Foundation-related activity confined to our new group on 开云体育 (/g/aprsfoundation); occasionally, we encounter information and news important enough to warrant wider distribution.
?
That said - I have some exciting news to share...
?
I did some sleuthing with Paul, Lynn's son(KJ4ERJ—SK), to determine where Lynn hosted ANSRVR. We found it!
?
To make a long story short, ANSRVR officially moved to a new server yesterday morning.

For you IT propeller heads (like myself), some details about the server:

OS: Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
vCPU: 2
Memory: 4 GB
Storage: 100 GB NVMe SSD

Location: Chicago, IL

Thanks so much!

Gil, As long as the window isn't maximized, you are correct that it is supposed to save the current settings upon exit. Do you have it "docked" in a corner or half screen on close? This may interupt the save as well. Do you have the xml file open on close? That will cause issues. Is it installed in a read only folder? Or has that folder permissions changed? Just trying some low hanging fruit, I can't currently get at my xml files to do any creative searching for those settings. I am still struggling to process the fact that Lynn is no longer with us.? I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Lynn (and Paul) several times when we worked bike ride events near Orlando over quite a few years.? I was both astonished and honored that he remembered me each time we saw each other.? I was particularly surprised when he APRS messaged me out of the blue one time when he must have realized I was actively mobile.? Lynn was remarkable.? He was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.? His passing profoundly saddened me.? We all miss him.
?
In early December, I was having a small issue with the software.? I was literally getting ready to put a message on here with the hope that Lynn would respond with words of wisdom as he always did, when word of his untimely passing struck.? I've been so dismayed that I haven't gotten around to putting that message on here until now to see if one of the other clever folks here might have an answer.
?
I run the software on several computers - they're all a little different since they serve different purposes.? One of my instances of the software always starts with the "View" set to "None" and the map tile selection set to one other than the "Original" one.? At some point, I must have selected those options (although I don't know why I'd select "None" for the "View"), but they have somehow become somewhat permanent.? I have to change them at every start.? I suspect that information is stored in the XML file somewhere, but I can't find where that might be.? I know just enough about the XML file to be dangerous, and I've searched for every version of character strings I could think of that might be used.
?
Long ago, I thought I was told that if you ended the program in a less-than-full window, the XML file would store all the current parameters so that it would open again as you left it when you closed it.? I've tried that, but it doesn't seem to work, so maybe I misunderstood that situation.
?
So, does anyone happen to know where or how those two parameters (selections for "View" and "Screen/Tile set") are stored so I can change them?? I have no problem editing the XML file as long as I know what I'm looking for (and I do make a copy of the current working file before I start tinkering...).
?
Thanks.

Re: Instruction review
Here's the wiki page for multi-line objects. I was trying to find my example that I created, but looking at the history, that was 2011 or 2012 when I was creating the documentation. Hmm, found a clue?from when I was playing with multi-line objects, back on Sept 30, 2016. I spent a bit of time playing with multi-line objects when writing the wiki page, and then when playing with demo object I was making in 2016. Re: Digipeating with Kenwood TM D710
The D710 has digipeating built into the radio when the internal TNC is not in kiss mode. It's in the manual, that I don't have handy to tell you the setting to set for it to digipeater stand alone. Several YouTube videos on how to do it too.? But, if you want APRSIS-32 to do the digipeating, you have to have a KISS port set up in APRSIS-32... that port can be something like a Digirig with a soundcard modem of your choice or? by using the 710 internal TNC in KISS mode.? Once a good KISS mode port is there, then you have to have the digipeat?settings in the aprsis32.xml -AND- APRSIS-32 in DEV mode ( an .xml setting separate from the digipeat?settings ). Re: Digipeating with Kenwood TM D710
That is a "third" method of connecting the D710 to a computer for packet: 1. D710 internal TNC in Packet12 mode ??? Old TNC3 style packet interface at 1200 baud - TNC controls TX 2. D710 internal TNC in KISS mode ??? KISS mode packet interface at 1200 baud where PC controls TX 3. DigiRig / Sound card interface ??? PC controls everything through virtual TNC software (UUZ7HO, DireWolf, ...) More info at: Robert Giuliano

Thank you all.? I will repost when it is finalized.
?
I didn't clarify, but this is not specific to APRS-IS32; many of the users I am trying to reach would be using phone apps.? I just felt there was a good knowledge base here. In fact, I still use UI-View32 at home & mobile, primarily.
?
I do use objects pretty regularly.? In our Blizzard event, I posted several objects for stations reporting snow totals who were not on APRS to create a bigger picture.? I also use Overlays for public service events on my own map. Brian, KC0BS, a regional APRS guru wrote a scripted spreadsheet where it is easy to enter position data for overlay objects which then creates the correct overlay file.
?
I've never drawn areas yet - will have to look into that.
?
Also haven't done bulletins; I'm mostly interested in communicating among our ARES group using APRS.
?
Thanks for your comments.
