About the Talk: "Understanding Space Weather" by Rob Steenburg (AD0IU) We’re excited to host Rob Steenburgh (AD0IU), Science and Operations Officer at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, as he unpacks the fascinating world of space weather! What is Space Weather? Space weather refers to the varying conditions caused by solar activity, including solar flares, solar wind, and geomagnetic storms. These powerful phenomena affect Earth’s atmosphere and can impact technology, communications, and more. Recently, space weather has made headlines: just last night, the aurora borealis was visible from five U.S. states—a rare and beautiful display triggered by solar activity. Why Should We Care? Rob will cover how space storms influence radio propagation, the Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF), and potential power outages. This knowledge is essential for radio operators, who may notice unusual signal behavior during solar storms. Tentative LIst of Topics to be ancovered What is space weather? Causes? Effects? Auroras. (Mention HAARP triggering Auroras) How is space weather displayed? What's measured? What do the measurements mean? Where do we go to get space weather reports? The ARC website shows the N0NBH space weather dashboard. NOAA has websites dedicated to it. Effects on HF propagation. MUF? Effects on electrical grid and electronics in general Protections. Design considerations? Faraday cages, etc. Q&A Rob will also introduce ARC's Solar Weather Dashboard on our website, walking us through key metrics and what they indicate for our activities. ?? Call Sign Badges
Georgia Tech Radio Club call sign badges are now available from The SignMan https://www.thesignman.com/. Go to the Order Desk and under Color Products select Name Badge. In the details enter Georgia Tech Amateur Radio Club, your name and callsign. It comes with a standard safety pin clasp but you can upgrade it to magnetic.

W4AQL Shack Workday
Dear all, Spring is almost here, and W4AQL needs your help with cleaning! We are planning a shack/roof work day on one of the mid-semester break days in March (Tue 3/16 or Wed 3/24). Things we need help with: Testing old coax cables Making new ethernet cables Testing antennas/rotators and repair as needed Taking inventory of surplus equipment General cleaning Lunch will be provided, and for those on roof duty, you will get a great view of Midtown while helping the club! No prior amateur radio experience required; you're guaranteed to know more about the station at the end of the day! Please indicate your availability/preference here. W4AQL Open Shack
W4AQL Announcement This month's Open Shack will take place on Tuesday, 23 February 2021, at 7 PM. Attendees should meet in Van Leer room C456, across the hall from the Shack. This month's event will have the same format as the modified Open Shack we held last month, with socialization happening in C456 and attendees taking turns to go into the Shack. Food from Chick-Fil-A will be provided by the club. In the interest of safety and so that we may place food orders, each attendee must register before the event at https://forms.gle/KgAD7ArchQBrVJqS6. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, attendees MUST adhere to the safety rules in place. Face masks fully covering the mouth and nose shall be properly worn at all times, except when eating. Attendees shall eat only in their assigned spots, and shall immediately replace their masks upon leaving their spots. Any additional safety instructions given by the officers must be strictly observed. Your cooperation will ensure that we are able to continue holding in-person events for the foreseeable future.
