Repair advice? 2021 A-Liner. tree branch punctured roof

Hello,

?

This is my first time posting messages on this forum.? Would someone advice me on how to fix this hole?? Attached some pictures in the attachment.? There is no water damage yet.

?

Thank you,

Peter

?

Hmmm

Their probably a lot better solutions and some will be posted.? But just my initial thoughts

1 cut the damaged area square.

2. Get some foam insulation from your local home improvement store on approx the same thickness of the roof panel.

3. Cut the foam and place in the damaged area. Then cover with eternabond tape starting? at the bottom sort of like shingles.

Eterna bond tape is some pretty amazing stuff

Hi Gang:

Dan's ideas are pretty good. I like the sheet foam, I first thought Great Stuff foam in place.

The things I might add are a wood frame to re-enforce the damaged area and provide something to screw patches to. In side could be white Masonite, outside either aluminum or fiberglass.

I really like the Eternabond tape, I've used it for the skylight we added and also for the roof hinges fore and aft. Years have passed and it looks fine.

Also you only need small bits of materials, ask around for scrap cut-offs. No need to buy a 4x8 sheet of form for a patch. Also commercial roofer have superior foam for roofing. Come to think of it I have both roofing form and also the scrap that came out where we put the skylight and side hatch in. Send me dimensions and I could cut you off a piece. Drive to Charleston, South Carolina and I'll help you fix it.

E-mail advice might be all you need.

Take care, Carl.

Thank you both @dan_smartt and @carl for replying and get ideas.?
?
I am gonna do what you both suggested.? I will cut a square today and I will source some scrap parts and attempt to patch it soon.
?
I may take up on your offer @carl for spare parts if I can't find some locally.? Happy to send your some gift from Pacific NW in return :)?

Hello Again:

Check out the photo I took during our skylight installation:

/g/A-frameCamperForum/album?id=124000

It was a bit scary to cut the big panel out, but it went fine. The view from the table inside was certainly worth it.

Our camper has aluminum outside and 5mm plywood inside. A small piece wouldn't be bad to ship to the Pacific NW.

Carl.

My first piece of advice would be to wait at least a week before you do anything.? That way you'll do it the best way for your purposes.?
?
You have many options on how to do this repair.? You could? lay a piece of filon over the outside of the hole (filon is the 1/16th inch thick fiberglass that your trailer has as an outer skin), and glue in place.? Lay a piece of fiberboard over the inside of the hole and glue in place.? Drill a small hole through the inner patch, squirt some foam in there, put some caulk in the hole, then paint the inner patch.? This would be the easiest way.
?
Next step up would be cut out the area of the hole, then cut out an area from the top that is one-inch bigger that the prior hole, but don't cut through the inner skin.? Then lay a piece of 1/16" aluminum in the hole, resting on and glued to the inner skin for strength.? Then lay foam in the hole, and a piece of filon on top of the foam.? Also fit a piece of fiberboard board in the hole on the inside, and paint to match.
?
As an alternative you could lay fiberglass cloth on the outside, paint with epoxy resin, sand and gelcoat.? That would give the best look, but fiberglass repairs are a LOT of work.

Hey Steve,
?
I do like the easier solution.? Save the time and money.??
?
Where would you go about sourcing the:
- filon board?
- right type of glue
- EternaBond tape to type outer layer for rain ()
?
Hopefully the color matches the filon board I have.? I won't need too much material either.

For the filon, I'd ask Aliner. But that one may be hard to find in small quantities.? Just FYI filon is sold in rolls.?
?
For the glue, use epoxy.
?
I wouldn't use any eternabond.? Just glue the filon down, and caulk around the edges.
?
One other thought in this repair though.? A 2021 Aliner is worth a lot of money.? Why don't you use insurance?? They will probably replace the whole roof section, and it will look superb.? You'll have to pay your deductible, but you'll get more than that back when you sell it.? That's the route I'd go with a newer unit.

I purchased Eternabond at:??

Super fast shipping.

Wow , thanks for the link Pam. I didn't know ow eternabond came in so many widths.? I only seen it on Amazon much more limited selection there.

Definitely saving that website for possible future needs.

Thanks again

Also available in various widths and lengths cut from bulk rolls from numerous eBay sellers. Cost varies greatly so shop carefully.?

Edited

Yeah, insurance would be my first go to as well.? We had insurance on the camper but we were not using it for over a year so I cancelled the insurance. The camper was just sitting there.
?
Right after I cancel, we got a big wind storm next month and this happened.??
?
Out of pocket cost for replacing the whole section is 6K -- 10K from a local dealer.? I think I am just gonna patch it.? It may not look as good, but should be functional.??
?
Best,
Peter
