Need Advice Please!!

Sunny533

Need advice please... a woman is interested in purchasing my Scout Lite but has never towed anything before. She asked if we could hitch it up to my vehicle and take it for a short ride and she then wants to drive my SUV with the camper (and me still in the car) for a few minutes to see what it's like. I am not entirely comfortable with the idea for a few of my own reasons but wanted to see if anyone else had done this before? As a point of information, I met her today for her to look at it. She is a retired woman who lives in my city and is very interested. I don't have any reason to think that my safety would be in jeopardy so I am not looking for advice on that subject, just on whether or not you would do this for a potential buyer or not and why. Thanks!

A couple of points:

If you are not comfortable, don't do it, you may regret it.

Any test drive should be done with her car, she has never driven yours!?

When I bought mine from a dealer, he hooked it up to my car and actually took me out to a parking lot so I could see how it handled, so I can uderstand why she is asking this.

If you decide?to do this, take her, with you driving to an empty parking?lot. Let her drive in the parking lot only. If it was me I wouldn't do it. If she is that interested in pulling a camper she should have her own vehicle ready to go, with all the safety features and the correct weight for her vehicle and hitch. Again, only in a parking lot with her car too.?

Hello Sonny533:

I think that S. Boyce has a very good suggestion. If this party is planning on camping with this unit, she should definitely find out how it handles with HER vehicle as the tow vehicle. After all, if she is planning on camping with it, that is the combination she needs to be sure is a good match.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it.? But take her to an area of low traffic.? Here in Ft. Lauderdale it would be challenging.? Also get all of her identification in advance in case something goes wrong.? An of course make sure your insurance covers her as a driver.? IMO

A YouTube was posted by the Laughing Couple on how they solved this problem prior to buying and backing up an Aliner.? They rented a Uhaul trailer and practiced backing it up in a large empty parking lot.? I would suggest you tell the lady to rent a pickup truck and a trailer for a couple of hours from UHaul and do the testing with these rented items.

I would strongly advise against letting anyone do what she requests.? She should not be buying a trailer if she has no tow vehicle and no prior experience with towing a trailer of any sort.? Be sure to get the money before you give her possession of the trailer if you sell it to her.?

This whole scenario sounds like some kind of an unbelievable scam.? Let Uhaul take the risk by renting the needed equipment to her.
