Looking to replace original deep cycle battery
We have a 2020 Aliner Family Expedition and plan on getting a new deep cycle battery. We do not plan to get a lithium ion battery but maybe an AGM battery. Our refrigerator/ freezer operates off electric and we plan to get a 100 watt solar panel setup that can hook into the factory installed hook up. Is an AGM battery a better choice than a regular deep cycle battery? We do not want to have to replace the components that were factory installed.?
Thanks, Nate Beaston? |
AGM batteries charge faster, and have more usable power (can be discharged to 80% instead of 50% like flooded), but also cost more.? Its a matter of preference.? Do you want the extra capability?
But an AGM battery may have problems if charged with a flooded battery charger.? Look up your converter and see if its safe to charge AGM.? If not, then you need a new converter before installing AGM. If you want more performance but don't want to change converters, you can install two 6 volt golf cart batteries, wired in series. |
If you are interested in AGM, also look to a larger size battery. Most a-liners I have seen usually have a group 24 deep cycle battery in them. I believe a group 27 might still fit in your battery box, you'd have to measure. The other option is to add a second group 24 battery and box and wire them in parallel. I would also look up the specifications of the AGM battery you might be interested in. It still has a lead acid chemistry, the same as a deep cycle battery.
A 100 watt panel will charge your battery, 200 would do a better job especially on cloudier days.? Zamp products are pretty expensive compared to other brands. Renogy and other companies sell 200 W solar suitcases. |
Be aware that you can't wire a new and an old battery in parallel.? The old one will draw down the new one and you won't get the power you expect.? Batteries wired in parallel should be same make, same model, and same purchase date.

For solar you can start with a controller that's 20 amps (or more) and a panel that's 100 watts.? That's enough for most people.? Then if you need more power you can add an extra panel. But solar produces about 1/6th the power in light clouds and almost nothing in shade, so you might want to get a small generator as backup.? An Alp 1000 propane generator is a convenient choice - it can be hard to carry jugs of gasoline safely. On Mon, May 6, 2024 at 05:35 AM, Eugene Breindel wrote:

I replaced my factory battery with a 100 ah AGM? group 31 battery a couple of years ago which was a great improvement over the factory original.? The biggest problem I encountered is that this battery would not fit in the original battery box.? Since I wanted a box that would fit between the two welded brackets on the camper, I ordered a larger size from the same company as the original which solved the problem.? So, it is important the check the dimensions before purchasing a new battery.? The biggest con to this battery is it's weight which is over 70 pounds.? In my conversation with an engineer at the battery company, I was informed that a gel battery might be a little better choice for an RV if you don't want to switch to lithium.
