crank on trailer
gary_eg
I have an Aliner that I pull with a Ford Ranger 2 wheel drive. I
have had the trailer for only a week and I have a problem cranking the shaft high enough to put the front wheel on when I want to unhitch the trailer even on flat ground. I have a class 2 hitch. Is there anouther ball fitting to elevate the trailer some? Thanks |

Hi Gary- Your ball height should be such that the trailer is as level front to back as possible while towing. If your hitch has a square receiver you can get different slide in ball mounts with various rises or drops. If your hitch is actually the step bumper you can get a receiver that bolts to the bottom of the bumper, although a frame mounted hitch would be better. In addition to the crank on the top of the jack, some (maybe all?) Aliners have a clamp at the frame rail to allow the barrel of the jack to be raised or lowered. Don't loosen this clamp unless the trailer is hitched to the tow vehicle or the tongue will drop to the ground and you may need help (or a strong back) to get it back up again. Experience, unfortunately, with my folks' Aliner. I seem to remember someone posting that they attacked the lower end of their jack with a metal saw, but that would be a last resort, after eliminating everything else. If that were necessary I would think that the trailer had been built wrong. -Jay |

I assume you have a receiver hitch. That's the kind where the hitch ball

mounts on a small drawbar, which in turn fits into a socket on the back of the tow vehicle. Assuming you have a receiver hitch, all you need is a new drawbar. They come in various "drops" - the distance from the receiver to the hitch platform. WalMart carries a few, and any decent trailer store carries 8 or ten different ones. Another incentive to getting the ball the right height:

If an A-frame is nose down (folded), in a heavy rain, water can run thru the weatherstrip and wet the interior. The previous 2 suggestions are the right way to adjust the height. ... friz I have an Aliner that I pull with a Ford Ranger 2 wheel drive. I |

My crank is bolted to the frame just in back of the coupler, and is not adjustable, I have never been able to use the wheel, if it is on the trailer, I can't get it off when I am hitched up, plus the wheel would ride too low to tow the trailer, being only a few inches off the ground. I just don't use the wheel, and when the jack is on the ground my trailer can't roll away from me. I had a close call with my 1987 Aliner, which had the adjustable crank, and the wheel on all the time. The jack wheel does make it easier the hitch to the vehicle, and it is nice to push the trailer around the driveway. I once thought about using the hacksaw.
