Replacing the roof seal

Hi all,

I'm talking about the flat, wide piece of? foam that goes across the back panel.
I ordered it from Aliner ( ridiculous price, but didn't feel like searching).? The? piece they sent me looks to be about an inch wider than what I currently have in place.??
I have not removed the old one yet,? Is it in a "gutter" or is just sitting?on top of the panel?? ?Mine appears to have caulk running down each side.

Next comes the bungee replacement,? yes,? seen the videos!

thanks!

Kathy,

The width should not make any difference.? If you have a dormer like my Classic, the roof seal sits on top of the dormer hinge, and the hinge seal is under the hinge and acts as a gutter.

Otherwise the seal is applied directly to the roof panel.? It must be cleaned very well before attaching.? If silicone caulk was applied it needs so be really cleaned.? There is a special product for that, but the name slips my mind.? Someone will reply I'm sure.? The edges are caulked to prevent dirt from getting under the edge and compromising the sticky back.

A word of caution.? Roll the seal out and let it relax for some time.? Let it overhang both sides of the roof, and be sure to lay it down without stretching it, and don't trim the end offs until you have to.? It would be best to let it overhang and store it "up" if possible for a while. I did not do that and it subsequently shrank to the point that I had to redo the whole piece.??

Kathy,

It's interesting.? I was just on GE Silicone's website.? They have a video about removal.? They use isopropyl alcohol for clean up.

I was browsing also. The remover believe you were thinking of is digesil. It's very expensive. Alchol sounds better. There is also so.ething called kleen strip that has 50/50 reviews.

Unfortunately the comment about clean with alcohol was referring to surface prep to remove oils and other dirt on the area to be sealed.? It doesn't mean alcohol removes silicone.? The reviews of the klean strip stuff for silicone aren't very good either.??

If you get a jar of that digesil stuff its enough to last you years and years.? But they sell it in a leaky plastic jar wrapped in a plastic bag, so you have to transfer it to a better glass jar to get it to last.? Nothing is easy when it comes to silicone removal.? But digesil is the only product still sold that I've found that works.

When you remove that rubber strip you'll have adhesive underneath it that you'll need to remove.? For that use acetone. Digesil won't do that.

I'm not a believer in the benefit of the silicone bead they put on thd edge of the weather strip, because it separated from the rubber strip in less than 2 years on my trailer.? If you can scrape the majority of it off, and cover the "dirty" black mark left behind with the new wider strip of rubber, you're probably good to go.? But if you want to take every speck of that black mark off because you can't cover it, digesil will do that pretty quick? You may also be able to remove that black mark with acetone, but it would take a tremendous amount of rubbing and scraping that way.

BTW use dishwashing gloves when using acetone.??

What a flippin mess! Wish I never started!

Use a scraper such as a putty knife then wipe with isapropyl alcohol which is cheap. It does take a little elbow grease!?
Hang in there ??

My favorite tool for that is a half inch wide wood chisel.? You have to sharpen it with a whetstone or take it to a knife sharpener to get it to work well, even if brand new.? That works about the best to peel up the adhesive.?

I just repositioned some weatherstripping on my Scout Lite and someone here recommended an oscillating tool to remove the gunk. That worked great. (I have ) It comes with a scraper attachment that saves you a lot of labor. The gunk on mine was on the aluminum, so I think you'd have to be very careful with the roof surface, but it should work. It's also great for small sanding jobs and cutting stuff with various size blades. It's a very handy tool to have around.
