Maiden Voyage

I was able to get my new-to-me camper out a couple of weeks ago for two nights.? Coming from years of tent camping this was like 5 star kind of stuff.? Everything seemed to work although I noticed a few little rattles that I need to track down.

One was the fridge vent fan.? It seems like when attached to the body of the camper the noise/vibration is amplified and transmitted through the camper.? If I let it hang free there is no noise at all inside.? I've tried felt pads between the bracket and the frame wall but no luck.? I think the metal screws are culprit.? I'll look into something that will hold the fan and not transmit noise.

Another question I dreamed up was about grey water.? (I actually didn't even fill the tank this time)? If people freak about draining the sink right onto the ground (no grey tank) do they freak about someone taking an outdoor shower?? Same thing??

Also, does anyone disconnect the plumbing below the sink and run it directly to a portable tank?? I'm wondering if it might be nice to have a completely contained system.

Thanks for the previous input on my bubble window replacement comedy.? The glass board cover worked out great.

BTW, I took the attached image with a telescope near Dixon, IL.

Hello Jeff:

Mounting the fan with wire ties and foam rubber should work. Any metal, (the screws) will transmit the vibration/noise to the body panels.

Dumping grey water on the ground is illegal in many places including Nation Parks and BLM areas. It can have germs and viruses plus soap and detergent that isn't good for camping grounds. Food particles can attract wild life where they shouldn't be. If you are taking an outside shower, please use biodegradable soap and shampoo, many are not. For a grey water tank we first used a ice chest with rollers that worked fine. Then I found a 25 gallon RV sewer tank that I cleaned up. I added a handle extension so we could tow it behind the TV.

Hi Jeff,

I agree with Carl, regarding the fan.?

Also, about Grey water from your sink.? Showering/shampoo outside definitely requires biodegradable soap products, just like using the lake or a stream.? There are many on the market.

I was able to find a "small blue boy" (wheels and handle - search waste tank waste holding tank) at a tag sale.? It was the small size and fit under the Aliner with some adapters and it collects the grey water to be disposed of properly.? There are several of companies who make them (Barker, Camco, SmartTote), a number of sizes, many places sell them - and the price range varies. ?? Knowing the ground to drain - height of your ALiner will help you choose one which would adapt to your drain spout the best.

Enjoy your Camper.? 11 years and still loving mine.

Second the info on dumping grey water, be careful it's illegal in most places?

I have an adapter to convert the grey water drain to 3/4" (garden hose) and have a short piece of hose draining into a 5 gallon bucket, when needed. At campsites with hookups I run a garden hose (dedicated waste hose) into the sewer receptacle.?

But mounting a dedicated grey water tank under the sink sounds like a good plan, again a 5 gallon bucket with lid would fit good under there.

Happy camping.

Hi Gang:

I've forgotten the low drain outlet, below the floor at the edge. I moved the outlet to above the wheel well through the wall. It looks like a hose bib, so I screw a "grey" hose that connects it to the mobile tank. I also added a vacuum breaker "vent" so the sink would drain OK.

Carl.

Jeff, if the fridge vent fan is the original from Dometic it will always be noisy and it draws 1/2 an amp which really adds up when using your battery.? Most people replace that with a computer case fan that draws less than 1/10th of an amp and it's so quiet you can just barely hear it.

For gray water, I hang a collapsible bucket from the drain line and remove the plug. ?The bucket is large enough to hang to the ground so the drain is not supporting it. ?Water in the bucket gets used to douse the campfire so doesn¡¯t accumulate.

I like collapsible ide. I was using a 5 gallon home depot bucket, but it was getting in the way.?

If you get a collapsible container get 2.? They tend to spring a leak.? Or just replace it after 5 years - they're normally good for at least that long

Here is what I do with my grey water. i bought a plastic 5 gal tank, and I chose a blue kerosene one because it is a color you rarely see and not likely to confused with a red one for gasoline. I found that at most campsites with the opening up the tank is a bit too tall for the drain spout. I added a plastic fitting that I glued in with E6000. A rubber cork from the hardware store plugs the extra hole. We don't get a lot of grey water and I empty it when I empty our porta-potty, carrying a tank with each hand. If we are not near a dump station I have been known to dump them in a pit toilet.?

Nice set up.? Smaller for carrying to a dumping station.? Thank you for sharing!

Try a Purina Tidy-Cat plastic container (has a hinged top and carrying handle. Just drill a hole in the top enough to fit a washer cold/hot water hose with one of the end fitting cut off stuck in the hole you made. The fitting side of the washer hose is connected to a Valterra drain connector - ?(available online for under $10).

Tidy Cat plastic containers. (not an A-frame post) I've salvaged several from neighborhood apartment recycling bins and I use them to hold salt/sand/grit for icy sidewalks and the driveway in the winter. Tin cans for scoops.
