Fridge

Because I bragged about how quickly I set up by myself, my fridge is now not working properly on propane. Worked fi e this morning when I had it plugged into the house but now that I'm dry camping it's not cooling on propane.? Any thoughts?on this?
Ranger 12. 2012. Old 3 way dometic fridge.

My first thought would be gas supply.? If you don't use a stove, it can take some time to bleed the air out of the line.? The fridge will try to fire for a set period, then time out, and try again.? I usually listen to the ticking until I'm sure it fired.?

It's lit but not getting cold.

What¡¯s the outside air temperature where you are set up? Do you have add-on fans? In hot weather above 85F, the stock factory vent system doesn¡¯t provide adequate cooling for the fins at the top of the coils. That¡¯s why many people install fan(s) to move extra air across the coils.

Even if the burner is lit, it might not have a big enough flame to properly cool the fridge.? Take off the burner cover and see if any rust flakes have fallen on the burner.? The other things that could happen are the oriface for the gas jet could be clogged, or there could be an obstruction such as a spiderweb in the gas jet area.? There are good YouTube videos on fixing these problems.

The ultimate test of whether the propane is a problem is to compare it to AC mode.? Run the fridge for 24 hours on propane, and 24 hours on AC.? Of course the hard part about doing this test is you need 2 days with similar temperatures. If the fridge works better on AC then you have a propane problem.

Another possibility is that you have an older fridge, and older fridges can get sediment build up in the cooling lines, and they just don't cool that well anymore.? I just replaced my fridge because of that.? It wouldn't cool more than about 35 degrees below outside temperatures.

Thanks sll. I had blown everything out already and then again.? A little better now. It is hot today. May have to look atca fan. I do not have one.

Kathryn,

Are you saying there is no fan outside behind the fridge?

Kathryn, that would significantly hurt the performance.? Originally mine had one noisy fan that I replaced with 2 quiet ones.? Factory setup has the fan in a thermostat to run when the fridge gets too hot.? I bypassed that and run mine full time.?

Yeah there? no fan at all. Looks like I will have to find someone to do some work for me. Also need new bungee and AC; although those I'm more apt to try myself.

Bungees and AC are more challenging than the fan.? LOL. Take some good pictures of the back of the fridge, especially any wiring and we can guide you if you want to attack it.??

Will do, thanks.? Might sound nuts, putti g in an ac would be time consuming? but pretty sure i can replace it. electricity scare me.

12 volt direct current like the fan uses can¡¯t hurt you, especially on a fused circuit. Not at all like 110 volt alternating shore power or house current. It is unidirectional and not risky to humans. Think of it as if it were plumbing-,comes in on one wire, goes out on the other, just like a water faucet and a drain pipe. You can literally hold one wire in each hand and it won¡¯t affect you at all. Your body has too much resistance to allow any current to flow. You won¡¯t even blow a fuse doing it! And people on here can talk you through all of it.

on our Aliner classic I replaced the single 90mm? Noisy fan with 3 120mm lower power Pc fans. Works great. Still going strong. Wired in parallel, I think all three attached to an angle aluminum strip attached to the top near the hatch. ?Now they are about 6-7 years old. ?Included an on/off switch too.?

I changed to two Silenx fans after a trip to the desert wiped out the OEM.? I bypassed the t-stat and run them full time unless it's going to get cool at night. (Rarely in Florida)? I used some aluminum angle to recess them a bit to clear the vent cover.

Except that I need step by step instructions on how to do it. I have no clue how to even start.

Not being physically there to investigate, I would have to defer this to one of the group that has this model fridge.? Mine is a newer model I believe with the controls on the face of the fridge inside the camper.? The layout is different.

Hi Gang:

That looked like our fridge in our 2000 camper. No auto-light for propane, you have to hold the button down until the pilot heats up the thermal couple. Plus our AC and DC electrical switch failed, so I replaced with industrial switches and pilot lights on the outside wall. The two wires in the lower left corner are the 12 volt DC supply and a place where you can connect a fan. (if electricity scares you, just unplug the AC plug that is right there.)

Carl.
