Air Conditioner Replacement

Well I finally installed the LG 6000 BTU, A/C unit I bought at the beginning of the pandemic.? If I had known it was that quiet, I would have done it long ago.? Wow, what a difference.

In the process, I disconnected all the woodwork along the wall, and removed the A/C Microwave cabinet.? This allowed me to re-align the walls to "almost" straight.? I had to fudge it a bit to keep the door closing properly.? Everything is quite solid after making some adjustments to the MW cabinet so that it fit tight against the floor and the wall.? Doubled the fasteners, and added angle brackets where deemed necessary.? Very sturdy now, and the cabinet is actually square!!

Hello Don:

We have an LG 6000 too. My favorite setting is "Dry". I didn't like it at first since it cycles on and off. But at night it keeps the camper from getting so humid. Usually AC will do this, but once the temperature outside drops the compressor doesn't run and the fan just blows the humid air around. I sleep against the back wall where there is little circulation anyway, so the Dry setting really helps.

Carl.

Don,

Glad to hear the LG 6k is quieter.? Can you tell if there is a reasonable difference in the cooling ability compared to the 5k BTU.? Our 5k (OEM unit, 2011 Scout) cools pretty good but is noisy.? Better cooling is always a plus.? I also need to take a look at the "Dry" setting that Carl mentioned.? Thanks!

Hello Don:

The LG is quieter than the old AC, but it still makes noise. My wife doesn't like the dry setting since the unit cycles on and off about every 10 minutes. Last week we camped three days and the last night we used the AC setting. In the night it did get humid. I should have lowered the temperature setting to force the compressor on, but I didn't. Either way I sleep with ear plugs in.

If anyone knows how to keep the fan running on the dry setting, please let me know.

Carl.

I just installed my LG 6000 a few weeks ago, and went camping right after.? It is very quiet compared to my original Goldstar.? And I love how it apparently uses a slinger blade to displace the condensate so it doesn't drip outside.?

I like the three stage fan control, and the digital thermostat.? The cooling is great, and I would have to presume it is better than the Goldstar, which was always adequate.??

I tried both the energy saver and dry mode, and settled on the normal cool mode.? One, or both of those modes would cycle the unit on for maybe 30 seconds, then shut down, then start back up again and run longer.? It was rather irritating and tended to keep me awake.? It may be an issue with my unit.? Maybe someone can chime in here about their experience.??

Although I was tempted to install it as described by?Rick Sutliff in his youtube videos, I decided to take the frame out completely.? Partially to see if I could improve on anything Aliner did.? I don't recall changing anything significant.? If you go this route, it is important to take note of the location of any coils etc. that might get damaged by any screw attachment of the frame.? I also recommend putting a protective grill over the exposed coil fins so they don't get all dinged up.? Doing this first thing would be advantageous.??

Hi Don,

Similar experience with mine, replaced with LG6000 about 2.5 years ago. ?The constant cycling on and off of energy saver mode is disruptive to sleep at night, so just use the regular mode.? Been up and back from South Florida to upstate N.Y. with it a couple times…and seems to still be working fine.

Hi Gang:

I cut the grill off the old AC and put it over the fins on the LG unit.

Mine didn't have a grill.? I used a piece of shelving.? Didn't know I had to buy a whole section so I was glad I picked a short one.??

Hey Carl.

I remembered your comment about the dry setting, so I looked this back up.? I was using it in the Florida Keys last week.? As you mentioned, it cycles off and on.? But mine comes on for a very short time, then stops, then starts again, and might stay on a while longer.? Is that how yours works?? The other odd thing, is mine does not have any hole in the pan for drainage.? I thought that was by design, and I like that is doesn't drip.? But I have not seen any pictures of the same unit that doesn't have a hole on the right bottom.? I'm wondering if it should have had a drain hole, and rising water is shutting it down.

Hello Don:

The Dry setting sounds the same as ours. No drain hole is by design. The fan blade has a ring around the outside, called a slinger, that picks up the condensation and throws it at the condenser. This helps cool the condenser and make the AC more efficient. So rising water isn't shutting the unit down.

On our AC, I cut into the fan power line and added a switch so the fan can run continuously. It was a challenge since the AC was installed in the camper wall.

Don,?? I took my drill and drilled a very small hole (1/8")? in the bottom corner away from the door.? Then I angled the drill into that hole and drilled another hole through the bottom of the A/C.? This allows me to tie a string through the two holes and direct the water drip to the back of the Aliner.? No more puddle by the door!!??? I think I put that in one of my videos.

Great idea.? But I just looked at your second replacement, and your LG has a hole in the lower right.? Mine does not.
