Soft floor

Hello: ?We have a 2016 Jayco Jay Sport Hardwall 12HFD Toy Hauler with a soft floor in a couple of spots. ?Has anyone tried using the epoxy method shown on YouTube to fix soft spots? ?Is it a good idea? ?The area is dry and there is no evidence of insects. ?Both areas are behind the wheel wells towards the back. ?We don’t use water in our camper, so there shouldn’t be anything associated with the water tank/sink. ?Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you. ?

Hi WilLin:

I've replaced 90% of our 2000 Aliner floor. The OSB board they used was mostly pulp. Using epoxy might have made it hard, I don't think it would replace the structural support for the walls, etc.

I have use epoxy to fix a bathroom floor, it did work nicely and looks good, but the sub floor was in good shape. Also I filled the gaps with sawdust so the epoxy would have some fiber.

Good luck, Carl.

PS: the new camper floor is tongue and groove bamboo flooring over 6mm under lament supported every 14".

I think for small areas the epoxy would work just fine.? It's worth a try at any rate.
?
The big question, though, is why did the area get soft?? In just about all cases I've heard of, soft spots are caused by water damage.? So before you go making a repair, you need to be sure you have any leaks fixed.? Have you removed any floor covering inside the trailer, so you can see the bare wood?? Can you verify that all the wood is dry?? Is there a plastic undercoating on your floor?? If so, can you verify there is no water between the undercoating and the floor?? Are there any water stains anywhere around the soft spots?
?
What I do to my trailer, when there isn't a convenient rainstorm around, is to attach a lawn sprinkler to a garden hose, duct tape the hose to a pole, and duct tape the pole to a step ladder.? Then I sprinkle each area of the trailer to test for leaks.? You have to do it for an hour to find real slow leaks.? Look real close on the inside of each corner, because that's one of the primary areas these trailers like to leak.

You are correct that it is water. ?We exposed some of the area and unfortunately, found it to be very wet. ?We are now trying to find where it is leaking, which most likely will not be an easy task. ?Thank you for your helpful suggestion of using a garden hose to locate the leak. ?We’ll work on doing that soon. ?Thank you!

I replaced both front corners and the entire rear before I decided to do the whole floor.? One bad leak area that went undetected was the front amber light above the propane tanks.? Although the caulk looked tight, it was not.? There is no sealant where the wires enter the wall.? Water came in, and ran from side to side at the bend of the wall, hidden from view by the seam tape.

At the rear, I'm sure I had some roof/corner intrusion, but I also discovered that the ends of the flooring had no additional sealant.? If the caulking fails at the lower diamond plate trim along the back, water goes directly to the edge of the floor.? Same thing on the underside from any wet pavement etc.? That trim is not on all models.? Mine is a 2009.

When doing partial repairs it's important to recognize that the camper body is supported by the perimeter of the floor, which itself is not supported all that well.? Repairs need to span enough supports to maintain strength.? My floor was sagging to the extent that things started not to open and close properly.

If the leak is in the corner, most of us put little flaps on the corner to fix that.? You get a 6" square piece of polycarbonate, cut it on the diagonal, and stick it on with two sided outdoor rated mounting tape, and stick weatherstripping to the polycarbonate.?

Top.? If you start at the top, it's still hard to say where it's coming from.? I start low and move it up every 5 or ten minutes.? Especially important if you have dormers.

Hi Gang:

Just camped two nights and it look like it is time to replace the floor of the right rear storage locker. The paint I used to seal the surface isn't holding things together like it used to.?

I'll try to take a bunch of photos and share how it goes.

Carl.
