Dreams and Nightmares, tag Mary, Henry, Rena, Leti ETC

Henry was used to Poole and his reserved manners. He liked them very much, and ordinarily, if Poole said he saw nothing, he would simply leave it at that.

But now, surprised by Leticia unexpected nonverbal response, just as obvious for all of its unexpressed nature, he had to listen to his own misgivings on the matter.

It struck him that some odd events happened that day. Many of them vastly pleasurably, some utterly disconcerting, and that day before was somewhat worse in that regard.

He himself wondered when he found that note, of the person able to leave it there. At that time, even Poole had to be closely examined before found beyond reproach. After all, the matter was very sensitive and very disturbing.

To the point, that if questioned about it, Henry himself might be unwilling to dignify it with a response. There was, after all, nothing concrete to talk about. No proper evidence to file away against the perpetrator, only vaguest suspicions that did not leave one feeling fully confident.

If that was where Henry himself has been earlier, it only stood to a reason that a man like Poole, who after his presumed military service took everything in stride, or strove to, might feel some of the same reservations, to talk of the vague and the uncertain that could not be adequately phrased.

Things have changed since yesterday for Henry though. He was no longer alone. His duties were truer now, and thus more significant. He had to try and dig for all of the truth, however uncomfortable.

"Well yes, dear Poole. We would need some refreshments in the library, and while you attend to that, I would like you to take some time and reflect on anything that happened today. I have experienced some strange events during the day. You would not believe how odd it I told you. And I would like to know if you observed something equally unusual, even if you cannot explain it, but it strikes you as strange, that would still work.

Don't answer now, just think about it, won't you, dear chap?" Henry suggested, considering the refreshments only mildly necessary, while the break required for rumination far more important. There was also this book he finally remembered, about a note somebody left to themselves in a haze, that he wanted to see if he could find again. Just on the off chance that his suspicions of the culprit could be encouraged by rereading the relevant passage. He knew he didn't leave it himself, of course, but the train of thought suggested in the book, it had some starting point he had to uncover.

Rena smiled a warm greeting at Poole and asked for the food mentioned to be put out in the dining room. She wondered if Henry would prefer a late night snack in the library instead, but either way servants had to bring it so if they weren't in the middle of work, the dining room was likely the best place.

For her part, Leti had a hard time not grasping at her own skirts for something to do with her hands. She as suddenly nervous with her place in this home, and what would be thought of her, and what she are say...But no. She was just Dr. Henry's new assistant, and that was that. He would handle it as he saw fit and until they were alone she would keep her mouth shut. As he had done outside when she was too preoccupied with her own growing sense of nervousness to pay mind, she looked around with avid interest. She carefully studied her surroundings and Poole, and Rena and Henry as well, for their reactions and moods should be hers. She took cues from them on how relaxed to be or not until she had her own feel for this place.

Rena couldn't help but give Pool a look of concern when Henry commented on all the things they'd seen that day.

"We would believe you of course, perhaps the stranger it is, the more we would believe," she told the butler with a small laugh.

Once in the library with Henry and Leti she pinched her arm hard, but made certain it was her upper arm under her sleeve so that if it left a bruise, no one would suspect Henry of harming her.

She made a face of annoyance at the pain and rubbed at her arm.

"Perhaps I shouldn't ask, but what are you doin'," Leti asked with a frown.

Rena chuckled as she took a seat near the fire.

"Pinching myself in case I am dreaming. I would hate to lose your friendship if this were all some high dream from something Jekyll and I took, but...it's so strange...none of it should be possible, and sometimes my logical mind rebells again, seeking an explanation it could handle."

She sighed.

"Which is normal I suppose."

She had read some psychology, after all, all the better to do her dream work.

"I can understand that, but I assure you I am quite real," Leti said.

"As she lunges forward with a knife and a wicked laugh," Rena added and Leti gave her a confused look.

Rena laughed, giving her an apologetic look.

"It may be something I'd say in someone else's nightmare, because of course I'd be real."

Leti merely raised her brows higher.

"Sorry," Rena added, then looked toward Henry as he looked through the books on one of his shelves.

"Find anything helpful?"

She wondered what he might have to clarify things. Certainly nothing on vampires or time travel. The concept made her want to laugh again, which gave her the urge to slap herself out of it, but fortunately she did neither, as either would've likely confused her companions, which was understandable.

She needed to remember to behave here, because they had to.? Henry's very experiments showed how important such was, and in a place like this, even with the door closed, were they ever alone?

Leti must be thinking the same, for she mentioned nothing to Henry, obviously waiting until they were certain no one was close, or he asked, indicating that no one was close.

Pool nodded dutifully when Henry asked for the refreshments in the library. Of course very well Doctor, I shall have them brought as soon as is possible. He was not one to hurry away most of the time, but his steps did seem somewhat more brisk as he made his exit, quickly found Mary and told her, Mary, the doctor would like refreshments brought to the library. If you will fix them up I will bring them. She did so, saying to him, here, take this punch, and this bottle of wine. There was nothing wrong or suspicious about the wine, just ordinary wine that most people might like. Also, she continued, take the small pot of tea. There should be enough in it for everyone, and it is freshly made. Wright, Pool replied with a nod, soon returning to the library.

Here are the refreshments you requested, Doctor, he placed them on the table. It is?enough for all of you, or so I have been told.

God loves you.

Henry smirked at Rena's exchange with Leticia. "Normally, I would ask my interlocutor, don't bother pinching yourself, let me do this for you instead, and of course I wound not just pinch them, of course not.

But then, not so oddly, such a thing would never occur to me when a lovely person like yourself is concerned. So I suppose my response is oddly conditioned on its source..."

Henry distracted himself, eyeing what Poole had brought with satisfaction. "Yes, now we are indeed going to be covered with our refined needs," Henry quipped, trying to probe Poole for a different response, and yet seeing none. Well, perhaps his instinct was off and nothing untoward happened this time. The day has been challenging enough as it was, and may as well be left behind, for better times.

Though in truth, times ahead were promising to be more interesting instead, he had to admit, with a small wicked smile at his own thoughts.

Rena smirked at Henry's comment, feeling another surge of relief at how like his later self he was in spite of his own later indications.? Good, that was good.

"I always enjoy watching you wake others up," she told him with a chuckle.

"They tend to deserve it, which makes you quite reasonable."

"Mostly they do," Leti murmured, thinking of his unfair and unreasonable reaction to Victor the previous day.

"When it comes to you, he won't be thinking' right, so keep that in mind," she added to Rena, who shrugged.

Leti understood the gesture, as Rena had done nothing to encourage Victor, which Leti herself had told Henry.

She studied the food and drink then began by poring herself, then Rena and Henry tea. She figured she may as well make herself useful.

"So Reynolds tomorrow, or have we other plans," she asked Henry.

"Am I to assist with patients tomorrow or have you books I should study?"

She was glad she held the cup of tea so as not to nervously pluck at her skirt.? She relished being here, but was terrified as well, as she was still so uncertain of what she should do and didn't wish to make any mistakes or problems.? She knew Henry and Rena were understanding and that it was about her, but it made it no less worrying.? Rena seemed uncertain as well at times for understandable reasons, so in that the two young women could find a sort of companionship that made Leti feel more secure.

Pool nodded, a small smile touching his lip at Henry’s quip about refined needs.

Indeed, sir, the Butler replied, keeping his tone serious, yet neutral. He ordinarily would’ve chuckled at such a quip, but a smile was enough; too much ado over one small thing could suggest that bigger things were lurking in the shadows.

After softly clearing his throat, Pool inquired, will there be anything else at present, then?

He also looked at Rena and Letty.
God loves you.

"Miss Hammond shall be working for Dr. Henry now as his assistant, so if you could prepare the room she used earlier for her to continue to use," Rena asked politely.

"Or if you can ask whoever does that...I'm sorry, I am still unfamiliar with the uties of each member of a house hold here in London as it is vastly different from the States."

Leti bit her lip to keep from smirking. She wanted to say she was sure it bloody was considering century literally separated them to boot.

Henry slowly considered the reasonable questions. "I have a strong sense of urgency about Reynolds. He has been acting more peculiar than ever before, and he always has been peculiar enough. He started talking about, I don't know, Orpheus of all things.

I never minded his peculiarities to be honest. A talented man ought be allowed some quirks, I always said. But certain recent events made me uncomfortable in general, and his intensifying of the strangeness does not make my heart rest at ease. We shall attend to him tomorrow, and you Leticia can help with my patients even before you learn from the books.

The first lesson to learn, the really important one, is how to handle the patients. Not how to treat them medically, that is my job, but how to handle them. Which is not something you could learn from many books efficiently, but you do have the right set of skills to pick it up all the quicker for it.

The skills from the books, I am not worried about them, you will have them in no time, they are all pretty technical and do not require the same kind of finesse as handling the patients If you don't know the difference between treatment and handling now, rest assured, you will quickly. It is after all as intuitive as it sounds," Hyde explained, then let Rena interact with Poole. Such small interactions would let her get into the habit of being the Lady of the House. First Poole, then the world at large, or at least such parts of the world as mattered, Henry smugly reminded himself.

Pool gave little heed to the conversation between the doctor and Letty. Instead, he nodded to Renas instructions.

Very well, mistress, I shall have it done as soon as I leave here. Speaking of which, I should go promptly and attend to?this current business; that is of course, if you will no longer be needing me here for the present.

He would give ample time for a response, either from the mistress or the doctor; if permission was granted, or if no response was forthcoming, he would bow to everyone of the table, then turn, looking almost as if he?were still in the military, and make a quiet, quick exit. ?Upon making the exit, he would go and promptly find Mary, and say,

Go quickly, and prepare the?room for Miss Hammond; it seems she will be working now as the doctor’s assistant.

Mary’s expression grew somewhat more solemn, but then she remembered the visitor from the previous night. He did seem so kind, and so respectful toward her. Very well, she told the aged?Butler, with almost no emotion at all in her voice, and hurried off to prepare the room.

"What's Orpheus," Leti asked with a frown.? "Some drug or summat?? Sounds Greek maybe."

She nodded when the doctor spoke of her handling the patients and that not being medical knowledge.

"Yes...I understand yur meanin'.? I what, tell them when you're in with another patient and they gotta wait, offer them tea or ask how they feel today, take their symptoms?? Help to holdthem down if you gotta cut them open to fix summat?? Things like that?""

Her expression was both studious and enquiring.

Rena nodded to Poole, giving him a warm smile as he departed.

"Thank you," she called.? She'd neard nothing but good things about him in her time and this one.? Jekyll believed Poole was always loyal so he had her trust at least.

She glanced back to Henry and Leti, putting her focus once more on their conversation.

"What did I miss about Orpheus?"

Pool?had noticed Rena calling back to him. He quickly turned back, just outside the door, and bowed once more. Giving her a friendly wave he replied, you are most welcome, mistress. He paused just a second, then turned away, to find Mary.

God loves you.

"Some people think of drugs, yes. Orpheus was this person who may have been taking them. But he is also a character from Greek mythology whose specialty essentially is to bring somebody out from the World of the Dead.

An impossible task, obviously, so you have to do something quite remarkable, to accomplish it. But then Reynolds is doing something impossible, altering other people, altering their perception. I almost wonder if he deems himself to be another Orpheus. In symbolic terms, people who lack awareness or intelligence are as good as dead. Not just to him, to me as well, which is how we found common grounds in the first place.

Only, where I am inclined to leave those people to their lowly fate as they are, and only improve myself, he needs to be the one to change them, to bring them from intellectual death to life. I think that is where he is wrong, because they don't want it, don't need it, cannot use it.

Not that I am the greatest humanitarian but it seems like a waste, to open up people unsuitable for expansion. Ironic indeed, if he thinks of himself as Orpheus the bard. Legends tells us Orpheus did not end so well. Is he oblivious to that fact, does he expect a better ending? Whatever is the case, he better not be the man who wrote me such cryptic notes with the purpose of blackmail, that would not be tolerated at all," Henry grimly declared.

"He could believe he could succeed where the original failed,"Rena replied thoughtfully. "They always do. Interestingly, though, you never mentioned him before." She gave a thoughtful frown, then shrugged.

"So he don't try to bring actual dead people back to life, then," Leti asked, looking mildly relieved. "What if he did this trick of his to someone like you...someone real smart and awake," she wondered.

He'd already warned her not to be alone with this other doctor. Not that she would, but did that mean she wasn't awake? She wasn't sure how she felt bout that. The entire thing was unsettling. She understood what he said bout people being driven mad by too much knowledge...would that happen to her? She'd handled the time travel and vampire business well enough, hadn't she? Well basically.

"He could indeed believe something like that. His confidence seemed refreshing when we first met. Now it feels unwarranted, unlike mine, of course.

I do wonder why I did not mention him, or what else I failed to mention to you. Is it because I didn't think those things relevant to the future, because I already dealt with them, or because, for some odd reason, I have forgotten about them.

Did I happen to mention the odd notes left to me. At first I believed those notes to be left by my...secret special associate, then I thought them to be the work of the cardinals, and now I am almost curious if it could be Reynolds, making his final play for superiority...but if so, he may have a surprise ahead of him, because when my faculties are at their sharpest, his machines, or his ability to restrain me at large, should prove ineffective. As intelligent as he is, neither him nor his two bodyguards are a match for me physically when I am ready," Henry honestly considered, not interested, ever, in fake humility.

"He did try a few times, rather, but those experiments backfired, some of his equipment suffered a backlash, and he abandoned such attempts ever since. Merely restraining himself to experiment on the barely living, but living nonetheless.

"I am sure he would be awfully curious to try it on me, yes. The results could be more satisfying than he ever had. Should I gain the full awareness of the completely developed man, I could enlighten him as to anything he could wish to know, then again, his requirements for knowledge being somewhat obscure, he might not be satisfied at all, but a normal person in his place would have been.

As a completed man I should be able to access even more understanding of how things work, but that might only prove relevant to me, which indeed, I suppose if the ultimate pleasure of becoming," Hyde concluded with a bemused expression at the very hypothetical but pleasant concept.

"Of course being now at odds with his goals, we should probably never let him achieve his dream of getting his hands, or machines, on the likes of me," the good doctor shrugged with another friendly smile.

"You re more interested in yourself than sharing with anyone like him," Rena agreed of the future man he would become.

"Me, my parents, whoever you consider a friend, if we ask or sometimes you can just she but you don't generally have a driving need to do so. You are content? with you having it."

She frowned in thought.

"I think you enjoy sharing with us, or Igor, but enjoy is different than need to."

She shrugged.

"Perhaps you didn't think it mattered. You didn't keep it to yourself like hiding it or anything, yew were open always," she said in response to his not mentioning Reynolds.

"No you never mentioned the notes being tampered with either, actually. Makes me wonder if it is new. I mean I wasn't here previously either."

"Nor I," Leti added. "Who knows what else changed."

"Or why it changed,"Rena speculated with a frowned. "I hate feeling paranoid, but it? sort of feels necessary right now," she said, giving a nervous laugh.

"I could feel as jumpy as if I were in?? haunted house," Leti said with a slight shiver, hands rubbing her own arms as if she felt a chill.

"That makes sense. Being interested in others too much, even when it's not wasteful, should point to an inner lack of sorts," Henry speculated.

"Although in truth, I do imagine myself at times, surrounded by peculiar people. Perhaps that is another reason I welcomed Reynolds. Those vague imaginings of myself being somebody else...all the more interesting that you mention my future cooperation.

I suppose I have no way of remembering the said future, yet it it sounds right. In my imagination not only have I looked different, but there were two or three different people who worked with me, against some common enemy with uncanny powers.

Though my imagination fails to suggest who I could have been, or who the others may be, nor even who the enemy might be. What does that Igor look like, could he be described as peculiar, I wonder.

I feel like I looked green somehow, but it might all be inspired by something I read, one of these Gothic novels," Hyde chuckled not truly believing in such visions inspired by the novels, he was not very impressionable after all in most things.

"Well, with the notes being a novelty even for you who knows my past, we better get to the bottom of it all, not that I lacked motivation before in truth, but such unsolved mysteries never end up in one's favor," the good doctor considered with a shrug.

Rena looked excited as Henry spoke of nearly remembering. What did it mean? Perhaps they were experiencing something else not time travel? But what else made sense? She slid a look to Leti, who watched on in confusion.

"Do you remember anything else?"

Leti frowned, shaking her head.

"Because if Henry recalls his future in any way, perhaps there is no time travel, which I would like, but then again what else is happening? There is Poole, Mary, people who would be long dead, though, so hell I don't know."

Rena sighed, struggling not to clutch at her head. Instead she withdrew her phone again.

"You remember being green because I showed you on the phone, the pictures," she reminded Henry patiently. "We have had little sleep and many drinks, so I hardly blame you." She patted his shoulder before pulling up the holiday photo where Jekyll was playfully holding one of Renfield's gifts from Frank and Fredericka out of the small man's reach by its red and green gift wrapped ribbon and bow.

"You," she said, pointing to Jekyll as Leti leaned to look.

"My dad, me there beside you, of course, my grandmother and grandfather, my mom there behind my dad, Igor there beside the tree, and yes perhaps he is peculiar as he deals with us, though he wishes not to think so while calling us monsters." She chuckled. "And there is my brother Ingvar. The parents and Igor created him, but we call him my brother because..."

Ingvar watched the antics with a small smile of amusement quietly playing about his lips as Igor yawned sleepily.

"My battery is dying,"Rena sighed. "And I know my plug won't work here.""Uncle Felix took the photo and Uncle Freddy was still sleeping so they weren't in this photo but I have others of them."

"But I thought there was a different kind of green still, one that dealt with plants and spells. Things utterly unscientific, yet what passed for science in the days of yore, before science was ever known.

Those cunning people, who have been pursued for misdeeds against the country and the Church, I have imagined myself doing something similar to what they did. Cultivating familiars, hexing those in the way and the like. It is not a true memory then? A pity, my images from such a strange life were both intriguing, in terms of what I could do, and liberating, because I could always remove those disapproving of my ways.

Too bad, this Igor was onto something. Monsters, may be the right word for to describe my idea of a memory. Monsters in the sense of being super human in strength and capacity, it has the right sound to it.

I have to say this for little sleep, it managed to stimulate my mind more than I ever expected," Henry chuckled, accepting Rena's explanation non chalantly.

Leti crossed herself. "Sounds like you're talkin' about magic...which...is not science...and probably isn't real," she murmured.

"I asked you when I was a child of six if you were a witch. IT was Halloween," Rena chuckled, gazing at Henry. "You have...will have green skin, a pointed nose and shin, sharp teeth, I thought you looked witchy. You know how they are depicted when they have the brooms and such, except you didn't have one of those. Perhaps when your mind formed that look, you were merely thinking of plants, as that could also account for it. Then again, what you speak of as powers could be very well possible in dreams, and of all of us, you could be he most powerful once you get that potion into you. Though be careful. Get it right and don't rush. I would hate for anything to befall you, and for all I know whoever did this hopes for that, so we must be cautious."

"I hope that isn't intended to make us feel safe," Leti commented dryly and Rena smiled, shaking her head.

"Nope. Not in the slightest."

"There are some writers of fiction who speculate that magic and science would have been indistinguishable from one another to the ancient people," Henry objected.

"As for myself, I feel that certain higher matters of science might as well border on the imaginary. New discoveries arise constantly that boggle even the minds of the average scientists, based on the intrigues in their mutual conflicts I read about in their magazines.

Alchemy that inspired so many future scientific developments is based on a very strict understanding of science. That things can change their state, from one to another, based on certain principle.

We can see it with people over time, but you yourself, dearest Leticia, surely must have watched it in your customers, for nothing changes a man like a good drink.

I say, when you look at higher magic the right way, the kind of magic that changes things on the deeper levels, it seems rather trivial that science can do the same.

Not all of it of course, most magical recipes of our time, are entirely random. Some older ones are equally useless, dependent on some mole on somebody's behind.

But who is to say what was lost over time? I said it before and will say it again, true knowledge has been lost to us. And if we agree to discard the useless and stick to the practical and the wise, as we would do with science as well, then the similarities might just be close enough as afar as I can tell, even if I would not say so to any casual passerby," Henry chuckled apprehensively at the very idea.

"Now that is an excellent thought, if ever I heard one. I am not very cautious by nature, but I do pride myself on being thorough, and in that you may both feel reassured," Hyde happily promised.
