There came a knock at the door then.
Outside on the stoop, Finn slid a smile to
Rayna.
"Here you shall see exactly what my organization
does and I think you shall approve."
He felt excited in a way he could extremely
refreshing for the feeling was such a rare one for him.? The thrill of
satisfaction. Of truly doing good, protecting the innocent in a way the Gray
Cardinals?had assured someone with his particular abilities could do
best.? At present, he felt like a useful and even valued member of society
rather than the abomination he deep down knew he was.

At moments like this, he did not have to apologize
for himself to himself or anyone else and that was a rapture...a high all its
own.? He studied the fine looking house, noting that it belonged to someone
of wealth. A doctor he was told...but the doctor was harboring something very
bad...more than one something and it had to be stopped, one monster at a
time.

Pool had already retired to his room after the ordeal with Mary, but he heard the knock at the door. Being the butler, it would fall to him to open the door. I wonder who that could be, he murmured, walking past Mary, to appear at the door. Opening it slightly, he peered out, and seeing Rena there with someone else, someone he did not truly recognize, he opened The door, stepped back a pace or two, and bowed, mainly for Rena‘s benefit. Greetings mistress, and how may I help this person here who is with you? He motioned for them both to enter. The person seemed to be accompanying Rena, so, he?could not be all bad, perhaps not even bad at all, since the mistress of the house seemed to be unharmed. He glanced around, wondering where Dr. Henry was, perhaps he had not arrived yet, or perhaps Pool?just did not see him at the present time.

The motion to enter did not seem quite enough for the Butler, so he also added a verbal invitation, please, do?come in. Mary had busied herself with other cleaning duties, but she also heard there was someone else in the house, and quickly hurried to enter the action.?Greetings mistress, she smiled as she bowed, and to our guest here as well; may I serve you something, tea? Coffee? Or, perhaps, something stronger? God loves you. On Wednesday, March 10, 2021, 8:54 PM, Hugin <blaisegellert@...> wrote:

His pleasant expression and rather brisk gate showed that he ?enjoyed knowing a bit of a secret, one to which Mary was not yet apprised. He knocked upon the door of her room. Yes? She asked the question, then opened the door, stated, oh it’s you, Pool, what is it? Are the master and mistress home yet? It’s not about that, that matter we discussed earlier is it? She looked frightened. No no, forget the blasted door for now, the Butler replied, there are guests here, and they have specifically inquired for you. For me? Now it was Mary‘s turn to look surprised. Indeed, there is a man and a most respectably dressed young woman, and they have specifically inquired for you. What do they want, she asked, her tone and expression curious. Let’s go and see, Pool replied, motioning for her to follow him. She obediently followed, and once they were inside the room, she immediately caught?sight?of the two guests, and looked at them, a mixture of curiosity and fright in her eyes. Madame?? sir?? here is the one for which you have inquired, Miss Mary, an excellent maid, and cook, I think you will find she can prepare you a most delectable cup of tea, Pool’s words of praise were sincere.? Mary looked far more frightened then, than curious, as she diffidently?bowed. She thought to herself, perhaps the mistress had sent these people to evaluate her, or to reprimand her for some jobs not very well done, even though such really was the job of the Butler. Mary did not know if anyone else were also in charge with him or not.?She looked at them, her head down a bit, her eyes not fully meeting those of the guests.? Good evening, sir, Madame. Mary smiled and looked surprised when fin bowed over her hand. She returned his polite smile, with a softer, more shy one of her own. Grave import, she mused aloud, looking at Pool when he asked if they could speak with her alone. I believe it will be fine, the Butler commented, there was another woman there after all, it wasn’t as if it were one man, coming just to speak to Mary. It will be OK, he said more reassuringly with a nod, I will busy myself elsewhere. Superhuman abilities? But, how is this possible? Her expression became downright terrified when he said that she happened two??such monsters right there in her home. Two of these monsters? I…, Her tone was meek, very subservient as she began, it was now her turn to glance around to make sure absolutely no one was there. I think I may know one of them, I don’t know what it is about her, but there’s just something about her that I, I don’t like. She tried to think who the other one could be, could it be the butler? Could it be one of the servants? She wasn’t sure. It never dawned on?her that the other one could be the doctor that she loves so much. The other one couldn’t be ?Pool, she was reasonably certain of that. He had been in the army, and could be a bit strict and rough at times, but she had suppose that was part of his military training showing up.? I wonder who they could be, she mused allowed. Still, a small part of Mary wondered if the main reason she did not like Rena, was that Rena, had the doctor, making it so that she couldn’t have him. I wouldn’t mind having some proof, not to say that you were lying or anything, but, I would just like to know where you are coming from. It is great to know that you protect the innocent. I don’t really see you as a monster, just…, Well someone who is much stronger. She glanced away at first when he mentioned her needing proof, wondering if she had been wrong in admitting such a thing. When he shot back-and-forth across the room, she looked impressed, and a little frightened. How…, How do you do that? ? Mary looked uncertain when fin asked her about the monster she knew. Sometimes, in fact many times, just being around her, seems to hurt me somehow, I can’t explain it except that, I feel she is harming me from the inside out, for she often makes me feel as if my work is never good enough, my master never expressed discontent with it before, but now since she is the new mistress, or rather, going to be, the new mistress, now it seems that I can never do anything right. I feel that she is destroying me from within. ?she’s not even truly the lady of the house yet, yet she orders me around as if she had been the lady of the house for years. ?I feel a strange sort of darkness every time I am in her presence, she honestly frightens me. She had given Rayna A curious look, when fin mentioned that she had various weapons. You are a warrior then, she ventured, looking at the lady. Her?demeanor was one of diffidence, fear that at any time, she would say the wrong thing, and this would be reported to the mistress, and the doctor. Rayna was for the most part silent, something which wasn’t all that unusual for the huntress as she stood there listening to the exchange. Naturally she held a certain curiosity about this organization that her...friend had spoken of. His views about being a vampire made him quite different from all the others she’d encountered and was perhaps what kept Finn from finding himself on the wrong end of her sword. ? She didn’t know whether she exactly considered herself to be anyone’s protector with what drove her to hunt but she offered no argument when he’d told this woman that is what they did. Strangely enough she hadn’t moved much as she remained alert to their surroundings and fought against the impulse to bury her blade in Finn. The latter was a constant battle whenever she was in his or Tatia’s company. ? In this instance she wondered whether the monsters in question were of the vampire persuasion or another variety altogether. One eyebrow rose slightly as the woman indicated she might know who one of them might be. She’d carefully studied Mary during his little display of power that he’d offered as proof of his claims. ? She tried to reserve judgment about the description provided as she was merely tagging along and this was Finn’s deal not hers. But she supposed it could either actually be a ‘尘辞苍蝉迟别谤’ or a matter of jealousy. “I suppose one might call me that.” Warrior was a term she would have used to describe her father but given the life she’d chosen she supposed it applied to her as well. |

who?will work with worse people for evil ends over time and need to be

Mary sat there with her eyes steadily on Finn, those eyes growing ever wider, showing more interest, when he spoke of protecting a great many people from danger. Since she had no powers, either of observation or otherwise as far as she was aware, Mary privately wondered what she could do to help such an organization. ?she nodded, giving a slight smile of gratitude to his compliment on her being perceptive; thank you sir, her voice was soft as she spoke.

She nodded to his comment about being influenced. Oh yes sir, in fact I feel, and fear, that I myself am one of those quite easily influenced. I wish it were not so, but there it is. To his comment about too much of her heart showing on her face, she responded, I’m not sure what to do about that. Truly, I believe your organization would be of much greater worth to me, then I, to it. What could I possibly do to help? She couldn’t help wondering to herself if one of those people capable of doing evil to which he referred was none other than, her beloved Henry. Henry, who was quite likely going to marry one who at least in her mind, could very easily be one of those monsters. ?She wasn’t sure why she felt a sudden urge to make the statement she was about to make. He was careful not to state the particular gender
of this person, lest she indeed show too much on her face when around anyone

She looked thoughtful at the mention of the name, the gray, Cardinals…, I,?I can’t say that I have ever heard of them. She looked concerned when Finn spoke of the one who needed to be swayed, or stopped. ?Glancing around, and listening to make certain she did not hear anyone at the door, or that anyone was watching, she stated, her own voice in a hushed tone, There’s a woman here, she just came a couple of days ago. I think it is she, who might well be trying to sway the master of the house. She seems to have a lot of influence with him, but I am not sure. I know it’s not my boss, he’s always been on the up and up with me. But this one…, I’m just not certain she can be trusted. She knew that it could not be Pool, but she wondered if it could actually be one of the other servants? But her focus was still on the mistress of the house. After all, Mary believed with her whole heart that it absolutely, positively could not, B, Henry. She took from her apron pocket a small piece of parchment, what exactly, do I need to watch for, and report? I shall do my best for you of course, although it is rather difficult for me to believe that you are actually willing to put such trust in the likes of me. She was eager to take notes, but realized that she must hide these notes in a safe, secure place, where they couldn’t be found by anyone, not even Pool. Poor fellow, Mary thought to herself, he had always been so open and trusting with her, although he had verbally scolded her many times, for not being about some of her work that she was supposed to do. But no, she had to protect him, him and the doctor. This evil woman who had just come into the house needed to be stopped. Mary had to admit, if only to herself, that it felt so good to be on a mission, a real mission that didn’t involve always bringing coffee, tea, meals, or other things, or even cleaning. Someone actually trusted…, Her. Would you care to have the woman’s name, she cautiously inquired. I could write it down and give it to you, although I dare not say it out loud, for fear she might be lurking; in fact I fear I have told you too much already, not that I don’t trust you, I will do my best for you, but it is she…, She whom I do not trust. When Finn said the name of the woman would be nice, Mary took out a small piece of parchment, and simply wrote the name, Rena. She handed it to Finn with trembling hands, while listening to him, looking increasingly uncertain at what he was saying. Was he saying that she, Rena, was not the one to be afraid of? But it was clear he did not know, or at least did not seem to know for certain.

Her eyes met his, seeming to pierce through them, when he said her name and told her to, just be warned. Her countenance was a mixture of incredulity and uncertainty as Finn spoke his next words, and they would be words that would return to her mind again and again in the Times to come. ?But whom did she see?day in and day out? She mentally thought through each name, there was the mistress of course, then there was Pool, The dear elderly Butler, who had taken her in and trained her how to be a good servant. She mentally dismissed him, couldn’t be him, surely not, he was so loyal and kind, as were the other servants in the household. But that left only one other person. Mary’s palms begin to sweat, as she lowered her head. Mary had heard Henry’s last name many times before, so she did not miss fins next words…, And never know their true heart, as they, Hyde, it out of fear…. Interesting, she thought to herself, perhaps dangerously interesting, he could have used the word, conceal, or, they, keep it from, others. He had used a common word, but did this mean something, she wondered to herself. They hide it, she repeated the words, almost reverently, in such a soft murmur that only someone with the most sensitive hearing could discern?what she said. Her face grew noticeably pale, she glanced away, only to look back at Finn once more. ?There was a mixture of fear and wonder in her eyes, as her thoughts seem to go round and round on such a common word. Did these people know the doctor? Did they know his last name? She of course, had no idea whom the doctor was acquainted with. Fins words about the ones who raised him, drew Mary out of her reverie. It seemed quite obvious, he would use such a common word, but sometimes, one word, one name, could say volumes. So they conceal?it out of fear, they themselves have fear, as we all do, she mused aloud, before stating, I am so sorry to hear that you could not trust those who raised you. At least that is what I think I’m hearing. She was now wondering whom she, could trust anymore. In a soft, nervous voice, she asked, Um, what, what must I do? How she would have loved for Finn to tell her that the mistress, was the one to fear, that it was Rena, who had to go, or even one of the servants, just not the butler, and definitely not…, But one word had said volumes, and in Mary’s mind and heart, it had said enough, without actually saying at all. ?She gave a questioning?glance toward Rayna, then her eyes went back to Fin, and remained riveted on him, as she awaited his instructions, or instructions from either one.? Um, thank you, her tone was shy, as she returned his smile with a sincere one of her own. Good, and fear, she mused allowed as was her custom when considering something. That is an interesting contrast, everyone knows that good and evil are constantly at war in this world, but no one ever really stopped to think what might cause some of the evil. Fear, definitely something to ponder, the to in??conflict. She watched with some satisfaction as he pocketed the note, trusting that at least to a point, Reno would be secretly observed. The nagging thought of perhaps her master, the good doctor, being some sort of a secret monster, was very disconcerting and unsettling to her. Fear touched Mary‘s eyes when Finn spoke the words that more than one person there was not her friend. The mistress for certain, she stated, but I wonder which one of the other servants that it is. Oh please, God in heaven, she’s silently sent up a prayer, please don’t let it be Pool. ?She mentally chided herself for being so stupid and fearful; of course it wasn’t Pool, Who could have reported her to the doctor and had her fired many times over, but had not done so. He had been nothing but kind and understanding with her, but then again, so had the doctor. ?She often heard talk from the other servants, as well as during her shopping duties in the market, of the good that Henry had done, and this only caused her to love him even more. ?But then, a?chilling thought struck her. I’m not sure she would have the greatest influence over anyone just yet, except…, Those chilling words came back to her again, they often hide it out of fear. She tried to push the thought away, but it would nag her many times. She was glad for a change of subject, when he mentioned calling on her, like a suitor to go unnoticed, and bringing flowers. I’ve never gotten flowers before, at least not that I recall, she told him, her tone honest. If the mistress thinks that I am receiving tokens of affection from someone else, she thought to herself, that could make me appear?less of a threat. Outloud she stated, that could very much make it possible for me to do as you have asked. Please rest assured that I shall do my best. To herself she thought, I think I could truly come to like and appreciate this fellow, that is if, I weren’t so in love with Henry. ?Fin had already shown her more outward kindness than the doctor ever had; not that the doctor had been rude or mean to her, but he had always treated her, as a servant, nothing more.
