When Mary would venture in to clean Dr. Henry's bed chamber now that he'd gone out, she would find a slightly crumpled sheet of paper on the bedside table. Musings hurriedly written in the doctor's own hand of a personal nature as if some fragment of a diary entry.

Clouds filled with stars cover your skies
And I hope it rains; you're the perfect lullaby
What kind of dream is this?
You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I don't?want to?wake up from you (turn the lights on)
Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare

Your love's too good to be true (turn the lights on)
My guilty pleasure, I ain't going nowhere
Rena as?'long as you're here, I'll be floating on air, cause you're mine
You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I don't?want to?wake up from you (

The room was dark, but it was as if a dark unsettling sort of energy cloaked the place too, as if something could jump out from behind the bed curtains to startle or worse but no one was there.
Monsters stuck in your head
(We are, we are, we are)
Monsters under your bed

Mary had always had a keen eye for even the smallest speck of dirt, or object out of place. When she approached to dust the bedside table, her eyes quickly caught the crumpled sheet of paper. What’s this, she spoke out loud to no one there, as she idly picked it up, and started to crumble it even more to throw it away, but then she saw something written there on.

What is, this, she began perusing the rather small piece of paper, her eyes began gradually filling with hope. Perhaps the doctor was writing this about her. I knew it, she murmured musingly, as she continued reading, he is, in love with me, he has to be. He…, But then, as suddenly as the hope had begun filling her eyes and heart, it left her just as suddenly as Air departs from a bursted??balloon. This happened when she read, I’m not going anywhere, Rena, as long as you are here.

Rena!!! Her voice was soft, with a deadly undertone to it as she all but growled the name, A?name, associated with a person she was coming to despise increasingly, with each passing day.

She momentarily took the liberty of sitting on the bed, not only to catch her breath from the shock, but to think. It felt to her as if something was wrong. I guess he truly isn’t in love with me, this looks like his handwriting well enough, but somehow, it, doesn’t sound like the doctor. She studied the note again for any flaws, any detail at all, either omitted, or?

superfluous, which would give some sort of clue, even the slightest hint, that the note might not actually be from Dr. Henry. Tears started to fall, and she did her best to hold them back. It just does sound like him, I think it’s a bit too,...,??I don’t know, but it would be just like the lady of the house to write such things.

I should leave here, she murmured, as if she were speaking to someone, but where would I go? I, I don’t think I can stand being here even one more day, with her, around here. The doctor was fine, but this woman, is?nothing but a cruel, evil witch.

Standing once more, she took up the cloth, and methodically dusted the table, her movements mechanical, no longer fluid, as one filled with optimism and anticipation. She thought briefly of discarding the paper, but then one of the other of the couple would probably wonder where it is, whether Rena actually wrote it or not, it would be just like her, she seems to have the eyes of a hawk, and a personality to match.

She returned the still?crumpled paper to its place on the bedside table, not bothering to smooth it out even in the least. She straighten the bed, and did other odds and ends in the room, at last unable to abide the unsettling feeling that was there. Something is wrong with this room, it’s as if it is possessed, she murmured. I must get out of here.

She looked around the room, eyes frightened and wild, as she scanned the room for what appeared to be a very disturbing presence. She took a quick glance under the bed, half expecting some thing or someone to jump out at her. When nothing happened, she breathed a small sigh?of relief. She picked up the note again, looked at it, then placed it again on the table, then hurried to the door, yanked it open, exited the room, and slammed the door.

Mary?? It was a voice she recognized all too well, now calling to her. It was not, the doctor, the man whom she loved, but a personage?whom she still respected, for having taken her in and trained her for the present?job

It was the Butler, maybe if she ignored him, he would just go away and leave her alone, but alas, no such luck was in store for Mary. She soon would feel his gentle, yet firm hand on her shoulder.

Merry, dear girl, what ever is the matter? You know that one of the first things in which I instructed you, is to treat the masters property with the utmost care and respect.

It’s, a door, Pool, just a door that can be replaced quite easily enough. Her voice was a mixture of one patiently explaining to a slow witted child, and one scolding same said child for his error.

Pool showed his disapproval with a deep frown in her direction. His voice now exhibited one, with not nearly so much concern, as with strained patients, stretched thin, almost to the breaking point.

Exactly, it is only a door, which has done you neither good, nor ill; if it has done anything for you, it has done you good, by permitting you access to the master bedroom, so that you can perform your duties, therefore getting paid by the master. So I ask you, why, did you take your anger at another matter out on the door, by slamming it as you did? ?The door, you see, is perfectly innocent.

There’s truly nothing innocent about this house, Mary argued; I’m telling you, Pool, it has a very unsettling presence in it. It’s wild and frightening and very unaccustomed to our orderly?ways of living. And just feeling her...,?She paused and quickly amended, it’s, presence in this house, is enough to unsettled the most stable and patient of souls.

Slow your rapid speech, or better yet, stop it entirely, the Butler commanded, some of his former army training surfacing and revealing itself.

I am forced to strain and stretch my patience and understanding to the outer most edges of their boundaries so as to understand you, Mary; he paused, then continued, however…, I did manage to catch one word in all of that rapid barrage. Her…,

Her, presents. I do believe, that You, are still enduring a most unpleasant maledy of the heart and spirit; I believe you envy the Lady Rina.

Envy, her?? Mary favored him with a look of incredulity, what is there to envy about the likes of her?

Pool returned her look with a slight grin, knowing he probably shouldn’t, feeling rather guilty for it, but relishing the slight pleasure this was going to give him all the same. It would be rather pleasurable for him, for he suspected that it could perhaps jar her back to reality, at least some sense of it.

Well, for one thing, she is quite beautiful, if I do say so myself, she is very much composed, and for all her seeming carefree ways, she is, I would say, rather cultured, and she has two things you do not, maturity…, And…, The doctor is…,

Don’t say it, Pool.
Unquestioningly, and irrevocably, in love with her.

Mary’s Face fell, you just had to go and say it, didn’t you.

The butler had a sudden weary expression on his countenance, but he continued, not voicing?the facts, will hardly change them, Mary. Besides this, the insufferable fever of envy is best cured by a dose of cold, reality. ?He emphasized the last two words in the sentence.? I would also prescribe a?dose of the equally cold, real, world, for you. So because of this, I have decided on my immediate course of action; as soon as is convenient for them, I am going to inform the master and mistress of the household of your childish, inexcusable?behavior. Along with this, I am going to highly recommend that you be presently relieved of all duties, and, permanently expelled from this household, with all haste.

Mary glared at him, but her glare softened into a look of true surprise, you’re going to recommend to the master and mistress that they let me go? Pool, you wouldn’t, you…, You took me in, you trained me, you basically made sure that I got this job. You? Carrie much influence with the doctor; please, don’t let them cast me away now. Where would I go?

She began to cry, and the Butler’s expression softened somewhat.

Well, you should consider these things before you go around slamming doors, and miss handling the property of your employers. Besides, he continued, you would be free of the awful, unsettling presence.

Oh Pool, you don’t understand, I love him; I love the doctor. She was sobbing in earnest now.

Pool now spoke in a tone that was soft, and sympathetic. Mary, we show the greatest love, not when we grasp, cling and claw, but when we serenely?release our beloved to the arms of another, loved by, him. If you truly love the doctor as you say, let him go, for to grasp and cling to false hope, will harm you, Without bringing him, in your direction in the slightest. He is most definitely in love with lady Rena, and you, if you are going to continue to work here, must except this. Be content with the doctor’s??friendship, for indeed friendship, often is the greatest of loves.

Mary gave a sigh, I pray you, give me space to consider your words, for I indeed hear a wisdom in them, but my heart is pained to the point, so that even the tenderest of words burn, as when one pours salt on a wound. ?if you have ever been my friend, that I beg you, say nothing to the master and mistress for this time; and after I have had leave to consider, if my stubborn, foolish heart will not give over its suit of the doctor, if I just cannot forget that note, then, say what you Will to them, but I pray you leave alone for now.

Show me the note, pool instructed, Mary went to get it and he followed. He looked at it, I understand, and I perceive this was the reason for the sudden outburst, taken out on the unsuspecting door. She nodded.

Mary, this is not but proof of his abiding love for Lady Rena, it is, however, a breach of privacy as it were. I wish I had never seen it, never read it, she told him. As do I, he replied, but let this be a lesson to you child, when you find the writings of others lying about, do not read, unless they?have your name, leave such matters out

I shall indeed take this lesson to heart, she replied, see that you do not lose it, he instructed. Will you keep my counsel in this matter, and keep silence concerning what happened today, she looked at him, a??pleading expression in her eyes. I will indeed keep your counsel, if you, will?pledge to do all in your power, to accept what is, and move forward from here.

You may be sure of me, she replied, and he nodded. And you, likewise; as for the door, I will examine it and, if there be any damage, I will take responsibility for it, she reached to hug him, but he pulled back. But know this, Mary, his voice became suddenly stern. You are, most certainly, on your last chance here. You must try your hardest and do your best to overcome your envy. For if any such occurrence happens again, you may be assured, I will inform of it to the master and mistress.

She reached again to hug him, thanking him profusely, and this time, he excepted the hug, and patted her on the head. They’re there now?run?along with you girl, I must go and make careful examination of that door.

?God loves you.
