LMS Hand Wheel X/Y DROs

I have these type of DROs on my LMS lathe X/Y handwheels and tailstock pictured). How do they work? I find them off several thousands over an inch compared to a dial indicator/1-2-3 block.

They sense the rotation of the screw, not taking backlash between the screw and nut into account. No better than the markings on the dials.

Brian?

The photo below is my solution for the tail stock drilling?depth.

??? ??? I've always wondered what the actual accuracy was on these units .

??? thanks

Hi, Bret; as Brian noted, you still need to take backlash into account, which is one reason I added the iGaging scaled to my 7x16. They can also slip/skip if you turn the hand wheels too fast (most easily seen when withdrawing the tailstock).

I had some significant issues with the ones I bought 3 years ago, but LMS worked with me getting (slightly) revised heads with better QC out to me. I also made modifications to mine eliminating metal-to-plastic contact between the rotating & stationary internals.

Happy New Year, Charlie

Thanks, y’all!

I was calibrating my TouchDRO app using a new Dial Indicator and using the 10yr-old LMS X-axis rotary encoder DRO and wondering which to believe! I think I’m able to trust my newly installed LMS-supplied magnetic scales now. I’m a bit disappointed that the BT adapter they supply with their SIEG scales/readers is not Yuriy’s and will be trying to get the scales/readers to work with Yuriy’s adapter by adding some extra electronic hardware.

??? ??? Yuri sure did a hell of a lot of work to get the " Touch Dro " where it is today & to share it with everyone .

??? thanks Yuri

A bit more elegant than mine; no bent sheet metal & no off axis extension on the indicator ;-)

I have wondered about the accuracy of this sort of arrangement.? ? A clean setup - probably ok for some work - and necessary to use care when needing best accuracy.

I've used similar to this in the past an various machines.
They work well as long as you take into account of the backlash. People who have worked machine do this without thinking.
