Re: Milling attachment for mini lathe

In the late 50's I bought a 8" Wade toolroom lathe that was reportedly made in 1939 for $275.? It came with a beautiful Wade milling attachment that replaced the compound.? It had a degree graduation and swiveled like the compound, and had a excellent little vise that looked like a miniature mill vise, it also swiveled and had graduations.? I still regret selling that lathe but divorce can do that to a guy.

Re: How can I make bi-directional die holder??? #adjustment #diy

The 3 jaw chuck scroll bearing is where most can found for errors.?
A low cost chuck can have as must as 0.0015" bearing clearance and highly costly chuck as little as 0.000,15 clearance.??
A machinist? will use a brass hammer and tap Jaws to bring inalinment.??
Do not try this on the??highly costly chuck? they will not move.?

Bruce,

I have an "excess" backsplash from a 7x16 that you can have for experimentation. Don't know where you are, but $10 + s/h?

If get lucky and fined a old Real estate singe will do job for chip guard.?

Re: Milling attachment for mini lathe

Heartily agree! Mine is parked on the back of the bench, leaning against the wall while it waits to be used in something that needs a pre-painted piece of sheet metal.

Here's my chip guard modification on Grizzly 7x12.? Needed more room when I got a compound upgrade so I bent it back at the base and made a bracket? to support the headstock end.? Worked out nicely with subsequent milling attachment.

Re: Milling attachment for mini lathe

As I cant reach much behind the bench to the wall, I just use cardboard for everything. Backboard, under lathe swarf catchment, mill chip guards and such. I get a lot of cardboard boxes thus I can use and toss constantly. For me it provides easy clean up.

I think the back splash is a way to add perceived value and a more "industrial" look at a small cost with a cheap sheet metal part.

If you must have a back splash, you could remove it and fashion something to make it free standing so you could space it back from the lathe or make some back splash from scratch.

I need to either remove or extend the backsplash mounting ( Ted Hanson¡¯s book has a how to on that) in order to get more working area, since the whole thing runs into the backsplash before I run out of cross feed screw. But that has to wait until I have the time/money to build my work shop so I can move out of the galley-like work area I¡¯ve currently have in our unusable-as-a-garage garage :-/ Yes there¡¯s a lathe in this picture, next to the drill press :-) I really do need to straighten my bench up.

When had Bridgeport with 48" table most was done 5"x5" ir rare I need to take vise for larger work.? Now I am downsizing even my work.
