Corona lockdown challenge
Hey all
Nice to see new members and Bill's welcome comment about cutting up a 'big pile of metal' stirred something in my head. Everyone likes to make?stuff, and if you're going to cut up 'big metal', you need a couple stands either side of the saw.? Most of us are stuck at home with the coronavirus just now, which gives us the time, if not necessarily the access to materials, to do something. The challenge then is to make a couple of stands from what ever you have in your scrap pile.? Here's the design criteria: ? ?1. They've got to support a 10' (3m) length of 2" steel pipe ? ?2. 3 point contact on ground, so they're stable ? ?3. Can be set to the exact height of the saw vice-table ? ?4. Fold up, so can you can store them easily ? ?5. Have something to stop the stuff you're going to cut from rolling off the top The only rule is you got to make with only the bandsaw, a welder and hand tools (incl electric handtools)? +?whatever materials, hardware, glue etc you have to hand. Are you up for it? As a start point I'll attach a photo and the design of my stands which were made to those criteria and rules except I was able to buy the materials at the time.? They took me a couple of hours to make and are pretty simple. I know this will favour those with bigger scrap piles, but that needn't stop you from treating it like an exercise in survival skills, having to make-do.? Hopefully someone will do an even simpler design, and one for swivel-based saws too. In the end we'll have fun and there will be new designs of neat stuff to build. Who could ask for more? A bottle of Corona to celebrate? - jv |
开云体育Exactly what I was talkin’ about John! And, exactly what I’m doing. ? Right now, I’m building a little box blade for my garden tractor. One of those things I have been planning to do for a while, but never got to it. ? It’s mostly tacked together, so I tossed the other goodies on, like the axle & linear actuator, tires & wheels, etc, to take some pics & show how it’s going to look more or less, when it’s done. I haven’t cut & drilled the cutting edge yet. ? I tweaked my original design, to use steel I had laying around. The linear actuator, I bought a couple years ago, for this project. The tires & wheels are off of an old hand truck I put flat-proof’s on. I had some new inner tubes, and installed those, since they leaked all the time. I needed a piece of 5/8” round for the axle, but since I didn’t have any, I cut & threaded a piece of 1” hot roll, and I’m using capscrews for spindles. The ball hitch coupling is leftover from a previous project. I ordered some 2” couplings, and one I received was a 1-7/8”. They sent me the correct one, but they didn’t want the 1-7/8” back….no doubt the freight cost more than it was worth to them. It’s been laying on my shelf for 8 or 10 years. ? Anyway…..there ya go. I still need to fab the hitch for the tractor. I have all that laying around too. ? Fun stuff. I hope the pic’s come through. ? Bill ?

Hey all? I don't really need another stand for the bandsaw , but I do need a log dragging device to pull behind my yard tractor ... problem is that my work load didn't change because of the virus . The still under construction house still needs work , bees need tending , garden takes up some time too . Then there are all those trees out there that have been marked for firewood for next winter . A country boy can survive , but it's a lot of work ! |
I got a short break here to work on getting rid of stuff here, but now

our house contractors are back to work with a special work permit.? This leads to things like the late night DING DING DING on my phone, they need an updated drawing for something NOW.? Problem being half a world away from the construction site. On the plus side, it's coming along nicely. On the other hand, just got the electrician's bill.? Their base price is for one outlet per room.? I blew past that even in the pantry!? :)? But, this is a top-rated electrical contractor so it will be done right. The main part of our project at the link below.? The machine shop is a 1 story section off the right edge of the picture. On 4/23/20 5:18 PM, Terry Coombs wrote:

So a tree stump cut to the proper height with a couple of big nails in it won't be acceptable? ;-) (Not that it's what I use...) -Dave
